  1. Nice to see you out Tomo, got a good few in the hot weather! Any flies about? we had them landing on saturday as soon as we pulled the puds out! Hope the season goes well mate, No sign of mixy this year for only the second year in 23 yrs, you see any? Brim.
  2. People treasured half hearted ferrets before locaters, ones that lacked commitment, that skimmed off the easy bolted and wouldn't stick on the stubborn. Its quite funny knowing how many people with a locater, still treasure a half hearted ferret over a true grafter, just because they refuse to dig a couple of feet. There's a lot of satisfaction to be taken in knowing you have totally cleared a warren, of live and dead rabbits.
  3. Sakes! That Russel clip is just a feckin nightmare, why would anyone go down that route? Do people really think thats what needed to hunt rabbits? Why complicate something that people have been making less complicated for generations.
  4. Read through this from start to now Rob, will be nice to hear how the working goes on, hope it goes well, sounds like a young animal to me, one of this years and nothing to worry about, it will settle soon with the right handling. Know exactly what you talk about with the eyes watching you, thats a trait you get with black eyed animals, there eyesight is way better than that of an albino ferret (not that it matters below the sod.). Most ferrets/polecats are basically the same animal, only colouring and eyesight setting them apart. All traits are passed down by breeding. myself i seem t
  5. Agreed Tomo, always nice to have a LITTLE spillover! Dont be rushed into it Tomo, you know whats right feller! ATB Brim.
  6. Nice to see you on the Dales fellers. I know a long time overdue, but only just seen this. Nice to see how the dogs cope on a normal day up there.
  7. Right you're not new to this place, so why is there a problem? Has it impossible vast areas, (strongholds) that are impossible to ferret all times of the year? The neighbouring areas keep filling your cleared spots up? Mixy stops you putting the effort in? Or you dont get out enough during the season? If you want a big hat for killing baby rabbits off, then you wont get any positive comments from me. Get out at the right time of year, do your job right (that includes digging the ones that your ferret, yes the one that you are going to get rid of because it has killed down.) and cle
  8. Do what you can to try and sort the jill 123, we all hate seeing the critters go backwards. Probably though, old age will be knocking on the door of the lass, you could spend hundreds of pounds giving her a better few years at best, but i feel the natural cycle of a ferret is probs 6-9 years at best, in the wild probs halve it. When the weight drops off at these sort of years, they are usually way beyond what nature intended for them, and rareley bounce back. Hope i am wrong, and hope the critter gets some form back.
  9. Yep probs a phantom, good advice from the guys, let it run its course.
  10. Probably there are very few there because people keep ferreting them slap bang in the middle of the breeding season. If a farmer sees one or two rabbits, then they say there are overun with rabbits. Same as when they are overun with moles, they say they only have a few on. If the ferreting was left until September (end of preferably), there would be something to go at come hunting season.
  11. Thats my type of ferret Mick, would not entertain anything else!
  12. If she's healthy then dont worry! Nature always has its non breeders.
  13. Thanks for the replys Tomo and Born Hunter, and like the other guys said, any positive comment describing the ability of these dark animals as a working animal is no different from any normal good working ferret or polecat. (or what one should be!) I think any animal bred from anything can turn out to be a great worker, chances are here in England go back a few generations, that a ferret might have come from a working background, from my experiences more make the grade when bred worker to worker. Any shape, colour, make up of ferret that i have seen, under the ground dont work any different
  14. DM i am intersted in the capabilities of the offspring. Not in owning one, i have enough blood and contacts to keep the blood, but really interested if they have any better working traits that show up, like handling and picking up, hunting up, or kill-ability? I personally would not breed down this avenue, but am always interested in any trait that it can offer or improve if the graft proves an animal is worthy thats all. A good ferret is something that most wont appreciate, it can come from any breeding stock, and 50 percent wont know what i mean. Any info on any of the traits feller?
  15. Hi DM did you work any of those from last year feller?, dont watch the site as much as i should, and am interested how they went on. Many thanks, Brimmer.
  16. Even from being a mini ferreter, up until my late teens, my old feller used pillowcases for bagging the ferrets. 20 yrs ago that changed. A cold wet day on the hills saw 2 ferrets bagged in a rucksack, one hob in a drawstring bag with eyelets (mine) and a great jill in a pillowcase (my old mans.) Everything had got wet, there was no getting away fom the rain, even got into the rucksack. I whinged and moaned a few times to the old feller that the ferrets were wet, and wasnt happy about how they were housed at the time. The next time we got them out the jill was dead in the pillowcase, she
  17. Down to eye colour for myself. Dont get me wrong, any colour, make up or sex of ferret can be atrocious or dynamite. Simply for me the albino's so far get the tick. They are capable below, (any good ferret is) they are easy to see above, (and easy for any dog to distinguish in a split second what the escapee is) and most of all, due to there dopey nature above ground, (due to there bad albino eyesight.) are the easiest to handle on pickup and entering. I do wander from the path from time to time, with the odd stray and so on, but thats my take on things. Chasing a fast black eyed animal w
  18. RIP old boy, shame to see the back of you, hope the jill throws out at least one to replace you..
  19. Dont know whether the way i run my business is wrong, but it seems right to me. I have 8 big cages, each split into 3 sections, bed, cage and outdoor cage. The ferrets shoite in the cages outside which is hose piped clean every couple of days, the inside cages are probs only cleaned every 7 -10 days, to be honest, the sawdust is clean and dry, and just needs spreading around the cage and topping up. Now the bedding chamber, it can be a month or 6 weeks until I give this a complete change in the winter, and usually only when the weather is mild to allow them to get a decent bed
  20. Most folks know my opinions on hunting when they are in young, like stated they never seem to stop breding in some areas, but i think if you hunt end of Sept to the middle of Feb then you are pretty much doing your bit to avoid killing out of season animals, and thats what it is in reality, out of season. Call it pest control if that makes you feel better, (Are you get paid for it?). My opinion, if you get stuck in through the bad weather and cold wet months you can usually have your ground cleared by the time the young uns are showing, if you cant, then you probs have too much permission, m
  21. If there's plenty of fang left, in the lower jaw they are usually ok, in the top row, it can be a little more serious. If its less than half the tooth i'd keep an eye on it just for the chance any abcess growing, there will be lots of signs though if things are going wrong.
  22. Post it up to Mick Dadd, the MK1 Meister. Not in Wales by the way!
  23. I take it there was no sign in the shape of corpses above ground, and no meddling around the warrens? A lot can happen in 3 months, mixi you will see the corpses even months later, if any ferreting has gone on you can usually see any meddling for weeks afterwards, the vhd from what i have seen in the past you would find corpses in the warrens found through digs. I'd say vhd, but with it being 3 months since the last visit, anything could have happened. Hope they bounce back.
  24. Magic! so if anyone has a mk1 terrier collar, then I shoulkd still be able to use it with my 8 ft mk 1 box. Anyone got one for sale?
