Basically following on from best nets post. Over the last few years, i have been making nets, mainly out of nylon. BOOOOOOOOOH, i hear you cry and can understand why! I am just a rookie when it comes to net making, but like the idea i have exactly what i want, which i am a bit off yet. Basically what is the best knot for nylon? Have found some of my older nets have the knots coming undone beause i have not swung on them, the thicker the nylon the worse it is, recent 6z's are holding fast, but to be honest i was nearly cutting myself pulling a single knot tight, and its the same knot you fi

Can fit about 60 6z nets in my bag, apart from the spazzy plastic yellow tent pegs me old man put on em to stop them getting lost, they take up no space, with the poly nets, allthough quality, they take up twice the space deffo! How did you go on at the weekend feller?

Does anybody on here think the 4z nylon, although a bloody nightmare to use, have a great ability to purse up and catch slow bolting rabbits that can throw the heavy nets of thier backs like a blanket? When they come out like a train, anything can stop them, but found a few of late, lifting and shrugging the heavy gauge nets off. Probs just my setting though!

A big thank you to Deep Earth, mooching on the dales

Glad you got to see the dales Tyla. Hard on dogs, Hard on stock! They can be a bit harsh at times, but its part of what makes it! -
and if you marketed it as something else, it would be legal?

I know its illegal if its patented, but i wonder how it would stand if due to not providing the servicing for the product 'the old mk1's', there could be a loophole?

I think most ferrets in my experience will come away from assed up rabbits after a while, the younger ones seem to stick longer. And i'm sure most folk will agree if you dont get them out when they show, they will be back down on the rabbit again for another stint. Personally i dont think a ferret is gibbing when it does this, its just trying to find a differant way to get to the tasty end. Come on guys how long would you spend eating ass!

Give the milk a wide berth as well, sure this can cause them problems. water is all a ferret needs liquid wise.

Can we not get an app on Android, or Iphone to pick them up yet?
-
Do people think ferrets are well fed if they have a pile of dried cereal in their cages 25 hours a day?
-
Starving any animal is not right at all, lessening there food up to the day out to make them hunt as nature intended, hunt when they are hungry i feel is not a bad thing. You need to know what you are doing to get them on point, starving could see them going backwards. I'd suggest just feeding them as normal unless you pay a lot of attention to the daily physical state of you animals.

Just make another mark 1, exactly like the mark 1 and it will go down a storm, look at second hand prices for these items! Nice ideas about hi viz, and i think if i was starting out again, although you would struggle to dig it, i'd be heading down the 15 ft route, obviously you'd need 15 ft collars, but it would be nice to have these in the same size as an 8ft collar.

Bad start, good finish thats what we always say! You deserve a good few after all that undercover netting, and i know exactly what you mean about the netting a small warren that seems to grow and you run out of nets! good work!

Is it only shore whiting? Think the east coast will win that hands down, Horsea is seeing whiting in the mid 40;s already!

Hi Steve, the runners are the old mans dogs, and are always taken out first, the terriers always take a back seat. I always try to get them out when the old feller is not out, and this one needs a lot of work yet!

I could have put money on you saying that Andy! Was just waiting! No this hearing problem is genuine! i can walk into the room and he cannot hear me, i can get home from work and its sometimes half an hour before he knows i'm back! Poor old bugger! Brick wont have far to go to equal the old bugger TBH!

As stated on yesterdays report, would be out again today, the new land needs it, mixy is on the edge of the warrens, there are a good few rabbits there, in full view of the farmers daily. Last night the old feller called to give it a miss, he'd had enough yesterday, and needed to get ready for a bird show. (he's been a big canary man all his life.). I was glad in a way, i joke about giving him hell, but really dont like to see him suffer, had to make two trips up and down the hill yesterday to get everything home! This gives me chance to work on the new apprentice. My old mate Rock the lum

Thanks for the replies fellers, nice to know folks are interested! Ferretville and Sirius, yes got to hold my hand up and say most of what i say is based on what i do in the region i work, and yes it does differ greatly nationwide, it differs greatly within 500 mtrs on the land i hunt! Tegater, we did go easy on the usual land, and has helped a little, there are a few bunny's throughout the land, maybee next year their will be good numbers. On this land we are going at now, it has not been hit by us for maybee a decade, and has only had the odd poacher and shooter at it, just the few times

Mine are nice to look at as well! My swingers that is! -
I have a great deal of respect for you Brimmer ( even more for your father as I am lot closer to his age than yours. ) Even though I do not think that digging to ferrets is ferreting, although, I must admit that on shallow warrens it is very effective. I have long been a believer that too many ferrets spoil the broth, one ferret that really works can clear a larger warren in the same time as 5 but without the digs. As to the rabbits being reluctant to bolt on a day, I have a theory about that too, just wish it would work every time, not just most of the time. TC Must admit Tier

Hi chaps, been out every weekend since the last weekend in Sept, mainly just prospecting on our land, not any numbers, and going easy on them, mainly due to the hot conditions we seem to have been getting. Black unfit dogs, ferrets cooking in boxes and flies everywhere has not been great sport TBH. Today was the first day we have got into gear properly, the dogs are in ok shape, the ferrets are making great shape, everything is experienced, and finally the temperature dropped today to a typical workable northern level of 3 degrees at best. Quite a few sleet showers as well. I have finally g

No Way USA! Not going over there for ferreting then!

I'd say try and get somebody to take you out first to see how things work and take it from there. (thats probably harder than getting land unless someone can vouch for you.) ask around.

Brimmer replied to Jamie m's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
it will turn up soon, just leave the light on, rattle your keys, call it, set a drop trap and leave some food out for it! Hope you get it back soon mate, they are usually hiding behind the freezer!
