  1. Yep full of twigs and nettle stalks, my right shoulder was aching by the time i'd pulled them all out and gathered it!
  2. That is an awesome tale! And an awesome bird!
  3. Hi guys, got the 8 o clock billet last night off the old chap over the blower, was hoping to maybee get a day off this weekend, but alas no, the old dood signed me up for Sat and Sun, no rest for the wicked! He discussed his half arsed ideas as usual to me, whilst on the phone i checked the forecast as we spoke,, strong winds on Sat but dry, and slight wind on Sun (tmoz) but damp. He wanted to work both dogs as they were raring to go, fair play makes sense, but he wanted to work them on the westerly facing slopes today in the strong westerly wind. Tried to steer him away from that idea, it
  4. Splendid pics, love to see others getting stuck in!
  5. Oops thats my type of fast ferreting rake!
  6. No mate, but I've been out with some that do. Ferret's down for 30 seconds then it's out with the old knocking box and doing the feed the chickens dance all over the buries. I'm not adverse to using a locator, they can be a real useful tool, but at the same time I don't think they are essential and something that would prevent you ferreting should you not have the use of one. Not read all the thread yet, but i am as i tyoe. Personally i know if i leave a few of my hobs for more tha a minute, he,ll be on to the next.. Reading the rest now!
  7. got plenty more pics of the digs over the last few years, but nothing really challenging, 4-5 foot knockthrough's, just to get the ferret back, but obviously, not able to get the kill. one day i'll get challenged and then show folks a proper dig, can see a 10 footer at some point in the future if we keep hitting the slopes and the lowland.
  8. heres the photo's, It was 6 foot down and 6 foot in to the bank, i chose to follow the tube sideways into the bank,, hoping i would get the ferret back if i got close, no chance, in the end, when 3 foot in sideways, i had to knock the top in and start again, Got him out though, and put it back something like afterwards, I cannot see where the dig was now.
  9. had a hob of mine sandwiched between 2 kills a few years back, in a tube no more than a foot apart. It was a big dig, by the time i got to it an hour nd half later, the rabbits were stuck solid in the tubes with rigormortis, i struggled to pull them, think that would have ended the same way mate without the dig.
  10. he is atleast 3 an we are sure hs is 4, junior would be the man to ask for his age, but he shows no signs of old age i got a 3 year old jill here that looks twice his age, she has had a hard life I,d put the peak of any working ferret,s life from there second season until there fourth. Could just be he,s getting past his best. had my near six year old hob out a few weeks ago, he was still capable, even faultless, buy you knew a hard day would have bossed him.
  11. How old is the hob Red, sounds like he,s seen a few seasons.
  12. Got to agree with you one hundred percent there Whin. Got the odd jill like that here, she,s no tiny micro though!
  13. Wish they were cheaper Johnny. I am still on the mk 1's, and will be for a good few yars yet. I still am in denial that one day i,ll have to make the mk3 jump. As i said, if the finder goes off the scale, then there,s nothing really anybody can do about it but wait, but i know on our ground we rarely approach that sort of depth, and knowing nearly every warren on it, you tend to give the bad ones a swerve. You will never get to the point where everything will be 100 percent , but may give you a fighting chance sometimes.
  14. IMO its got nothing to do with if you value your ferret, my ferts are cared for really, really well. Not using a locator dosen't make me think any less of my ferts, accidents happen even with locators fitted, like I said earlier what if your fert went off the box and was lost, you've not only lost your fert but £60 of collar aswell. Theres many positives to using them thats a given, but at £200 for a locator and 1 collar also very expensive. Think if it is at the max on an 8ft box then its probably way too much for most to dig out, even i would leave it 20 mins or so before i starte
  15. Whin how come you,re spelling is great in the morning and gets worse as the day goes on? Lol. Nice to hear of the effort put in to find the lost ones guys. And yep locaters are stupidly expensive for what they are, but cheap if you value the ferret, and the size of the bag you can get with them.
  16. Nice replies guys, think the biggest problem with the folk not using them is the people with little, or no experience just going out and just leaving them lost, or leaving a load of kills below ground , (thats the bit i don't like).
  17. Lucky on getting it back! One of the problems on the land we go is it will support even a dozy lost worker, these end up going unchecked for a few years, breed up, and before you know it, 3 years later, there,s bloody loads of the wild feral buggers killing everything in sight!
  18. Man after my own heart there rake, they are more than just a ferret, only when you have done a lot of digging to them, then you realise the hazards they face under the sod. Cheers for the honest reply.
  19. Sometimes you just look at the dial or the ground and think how the hell am i going to get to that? Funny how it happens, where there's a will there's a way. Somehow you get there.
  20. Excellent choice of a word there Tegater, invaluable agreed.
  21. Just spent a long time reading through the thread about the locaters. I know time after time its been discussed, and rarely has a sensible outcome, either side of the fence always thinks they are right and have thete own opinions on the pro,s an cons of the locater. I know a lot of folk seem to say they have never lost a ferret, i can include myself in this, but i,d like to say this is only due to the locater, i,d like to bet i,d lose at least one ferret a season without a locater, probs a lot more. Just a question to peeps that never use them, Have you ever lost a ferret? How often are you
  22. Like it Breeze, good to see the piccies mate, hope all is well, and a good day out.
  23. Like them a lot, i'm sure if you can put up with them, they will be worth it in the end! Good luck with them.
