My Russell Pups looks like im keeping 2
Brimmer replied to KDR's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Is there any Mousley in the line? real smart looking pups.a credit to you. -
Aye superb bag Tomo and crew, Its not like you hid the fact that there were a few different operations going on here, you posted it as it was, and gave the totals each dog caught. The title gives it as it is, 100 rabbits on the gate. Me and the old feller have only ever done that number twice.a 105 and a 103 in Feb on untouched land. It was at daytime and with one dog and two ferrets, the 105 first with me and the old feller, and 3 days later the 103 with the old feller with the same dog and same 2 ferrets. I'd say maybee 75% (including bolters) and 25%digs on ferrets. MInd you peeps w

Whats you view on whippet size lurchers?
Brimmer replied to panther82's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The smaller dogs are superb for rabbiting, being a bit quicker off the mark can make short work of things, also you see a lot of lads using them elsewhere. Personally prefer a slightly larger dog, maybee 25" think they can cover the ground a bit better when hunting up all day. -
Dog just needs sorting out, unless it keeps doing it then the final step needs taking. Main problem is some folk put too much faith in the dog before its stock broken, they need breaking on there own, not around other dogs. You need to be on top of them and nip it in the bud at the first sign of interest.

Most of the time you hear of ferrets going missing, but one added to you collection is a first for me!

Quick update, Was planning to replicate what we had done the day before, me and the old feller split up and work the dogs apart again, but due to the awful weather today, we ended up sticking close to the motor to shelter from the heavy rain and hail showers. The poley jill that was abandoned in my yard a few months ago got another crack of the whip today. She pulled her weight when put alongside Billy Bob, was amongst the action when dug to, and bolted quite a few when worked on her own. Not dynamite by any standard, but not knowing her age or background, still positive stuff. P

Nice one Matty, looking a bit cold up north!

Hi guys, know i've not posted much of late, still been at it almost every weekend, getting high teens to low twenty's every week, but nothing really to make any reading material about. The running dogs at 5 yrs old have taken a lot longer than usual to get fit this year due to the lack of bunnies, and the odd injury's here and there, but are somewhere close now. A couple of months ago,the old terrier that I thought at 11 yrs old I could take anywhere, proved he was still way off the 'Dog to take anywhere' list. My old feller had talked one of the estate keepers into letting us have a

Nice one Matty, decent day, good numbers, and yes you have to have a dig or two!

One wont even scratch the surface Tomo, but a few years down the line if left alone, 1 becomes 6, if half of them are female, then the year after 6 becomes 18, the year after that 54. on the third year i can definateley tell you that you will see a big dent in the big warrens. New Zealand may have a massive ferret/polecat population, and a bigger rabbit population. but it has less that 4 million people living there. its hardly under pressure from people unlike britain is. Wish there was only a 4 million in britain!

Cropsafe crew first outing this year.
Brimmer replied to stevethefish's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Good numbers Steve, and a good read. -
Been feeling awful guilty of late, my 11 yr old russel named 'Rock' has seen very little action. i'll start from the beginning, I got him from a local farm in June 2000. I had watched him grow up with the other puppies, think there were 7 in all. His mother was a hard bitch, not too leggy, but a dog bred for naughty things. He was the dominant pup, week after week i would watch the pups fighting, sometimes 3 or 4 of the other would try to bully him, but he came out on top every time, picking them off one at a time, and nailing them. He was the boss. Thats what i thought i wanted at the time,

Alreet fellers, had a look out again today with the old chap, the two runners Jed and Robbie, and two of the albino's, Spike (the beating bloodline behind most of my working stock) and Billy bobs brother (Spikes younger brother). We are beyond expectation on a trip out due to the lack of life on the hills at present, but we made a decent start today with the runners. Almost straight away, my old man finally put one of them on a lead. Its been a serious issue with myself and the old feller for a good few years now. Working 2 dogs at once is a lesson we learnt near 20 yrs ago, it jus

The ones in the traps were ferals, not lost ferrets, the ones we had were ferals not lost ferrets. They were probs the offspring a couple of generations back when as you said somebody lost them probs due to not collaring up . I'd say probs 2 -3 generations over the same amount of years, with plenty of grub to go at and the place was alive with them, a lost ferret can have something done with it, these things cannot.

34 ,thats a lot to be caught, thats a fair population ,what sort of acreage ?? On two large farms, the pheasant pens belonging to the shoot acted like magnets to them, but they were widespread through the land though, the large warrens were hit the worst, you could tell the numbers were down. Sometimes you would find a pile of shoite outside the big warrens, they were living in them just picking off the residents as they needed, We even bolted as many as 4 rabbits out of a warren that a feral was in residence in, they give your ferrets hell when they square up to them, never bolted one yet,

As said before Tyla, very nice looking bitch there, strong legged and deep chested, could there be a hint of saluki somewhere in the history? The build looks like it would have the staying power for a good days work, maybee not an out and out speed freak, but one with all the tools for the job. Let us know how things progress with her. Brim.

Get the dig piccies up! Well done Gnipper

They were everywhere on our permission a few years ago, the keepers had caught 34 of them, we caught 3 on our travels, They had been building for several years, a few the year before turned into a lot the year after, the caused havoc, but luckily the cold winter near wiped them and the rabbits out. Just been to the Isle Of Man recently, there were plenty over there on the roads at night, they use the roads for ease of moving about i think, why bushwhack when you can run the tarmac! Even saw a poley and an albino running up the road together, that made me chuckle!

Nice one Max, how olds the Russell? My old russell is getting slow now, think i'm going to have to get him out this Sunday, miss working him on the slopes!

Hi there DM, sorry i've not been around to read about any update's on the euro's, How are you finding them feller? Are they showing any differant traits from the normal ferret, ie handling, kill, speed and endurance? I am interested, just dont get to the board to often.
-
Allthough the old feller would tell me you need a dog that can catch em as well, in my own experience, only a few select running dogs can be taken in all places. A good marking dog whether a terrier,or any old mongrel that has been brought up right are also worth there weight in gold. Injury is not something that puts you out of the game with a terrier, they would make do on three legs if they had to, fair enough you have to net everything up, but they never miss a season like a runner can. Just wish my old b'stard of a russel was as good covering the holes as he is marking them! Anyhow pic

Do you remember the one with the skinny face, thought she would never settle down She's about five now, the one with the fat face is her daughter, she's three, I have some other stock I swapped with some lads from Doncaster last year, so no need for any breeding yet, had enough with the vet snipping disaster mate Is that the one that shredded your hands when you first picked it up when you took it off that kid? Ouch
