  1. Albert, just before I go. If you didn't write the article that states that those of us who work terriers in Ireland have Seamus Erwin to thank for our terriers and bloodlines then who did write it ????
  2. True, but the only man you'll hear say that is the terrierman, LOL.
  3. Helping a pack out on hunt days is one thing in that you get to see hounds hunting and work your terriers. But a lot of lads when they become professional get a bit of a shock when they spend a large amount of their time fencing, skinning, collecting fallen stock, exercising hounds, getting roared at ,spending the day before hunting out in all weathers untill after dark preparing and then a bit of time working their terriers. You have to be cut out for it and when the shit hits the fan it's usually the terrier mans fault.
  4. Yes it's a book that would grace any fanciers book shelf. If I'd have any problem with it is that it has given me a longing to have one of the terrier killing b*****ds back around me, LOL.
  5. Like I said Albert, yours in sport. And I appoligise for my geographical error and nothing else. And Albert, gundogs aint working terriers.
  6. Thanks but no thanks Albert. I didn't miss the N.I. gamefair for 14 years untill 2001 when you had to move the fair to the Ardoyne airfield because of the Foot and Mouth outbreak. You'll remember it was just before the 12th and we travelling from the South had to go through the Ardoyne. You'll also remember that there was an affray around the terrier ring that made the front pages of the papers. That was started after a pistol was pointed at my 9 year old son and I and some friends of ours from the North stepped in. The lads with the pistol were nothing to do with fieldsports and were just lo
  7. Sheesh Albert, while I was typeing all those words you were already back on saying that the silence was deafening. LOL. Tell you what, why don't you ask all the folks on here to tell us about Mr Erwins achievements in the field (where it counts) and not in the show ring (which doesn't matter). See what the working terrier folk have to tell us. If he's done so much surely many will have seen his mastering of the shovel, the terrier and it's game. But please, please Albert don't even use the LEGENDARY word in the same sentance as those you speak off. It belittles those that have earned it and
  8. As regards my own terriers and what I've done with them Albert? Entirely my own buisness. But I don't sell pups, I don't breed pups to sell, nor do I buy and sell adult terriers. Nor have I had an article written stateing that those who work terriers in Ireland have me to thank for the breeding etc etc. Nor do I run "working terrier shows". I have however judged several and those that ask me do so because I work my terriers. I was there in either '88 or '89 when Sheamus Erwin asked an 18 year old friend of mine to judge the terriers at the game fair in Russborough House ,Co. Wicklow. Sheamus
  9. Albert it is part 2 of your reply to my post that will hit a bad nerve with a lot of workers of terriers in this country and in Britain. It is rubbish like that that has been spawned out for many years that makes certain people and a club (hence the shows that they run) a joke amongst the working dog fraternity in Ireland. Correct me if I'm wrong Albert, but didn't you once write an article on Seamus Erwin???? In this article (and I quote) that you said that most terrier men in Ireland have Seamus Erwin to thank for their terriers and their bloodlines. I, like many terriermen, take this as
  10. 100 per cent. That is quiet a statement.
  11. Goes to show you ,you don't have to work the parents to get "top class" stuff.
  12. I think Tom summed it up perfectly about shows in that they are a way of promoting and enjoying our way of life over the Summer months. They are also a way of meeting folk that you wouldn't see any other way from one end of the year to the other. But in not just my opinion but in the opinion of many the organisers of this particular game fair have been using the same people to organise their terrier and lurcher show who are taken with a large pinch of salt by a large section of the working dog owners of Ireland. A pity really as it keeps a lot of people away and starts the "it's rigged" rum
  13. Probably, but if you were to be standing next to a burrow with a crate of domestics and you were accidently to drop that crate and all of the rabbits were to escape into the set . . . . that wouldn't be illegal at all. But it would be a very stupid thing to do.
  14. Makes you wonder if posts like that are from Anti's trying to lead people on. Especially after 11 posts.
  15. As far as I know Hoggs wont sell privately but you could try ringing them.Mind you when you send them back to be resoled their service is excellent. The proper name for fell boots is Shepard hill boots and they cost 180 euro here in Ireland. Cheap for a pair of boots that will do most lads most of their digging careers.
  16. I bet that suits an awful lot of lads lol. What do you mean by a pin? Not the corkscrew type? Kyle The corkscrews will hold most dogs but they tangle and get caught up in anything. I usually buy a cheap poker and cut it to 10 or 11 inches and put it on a 6 foot long chain making sure there's a swivel on it too. A terrier can then be pegged out in the field where he can be seen and not in danger of hanging himself or using up a tool. In good ground this would hold a couple of terriers.
  17. Fair play Duckwing, that's the one I was thinking of.
  18. Obviously with young terriers TT you have to do a lot of listening to learn about your youngster and how he's doing. With the workers I like to think I know what's going on. Obviously it helps if you know the ground your working too. As for tieing terriers to a bar. It seeems that on the rare occassion I do need a bar I turn around to get it and some **** has tied his terrier to it,LOL. Always have a terrier on a chain and pin as tools are for digging with and when a man is holding terriers he can't be digging. Although this suits some lads, LOL.
  19. Steves right, a pair of fell boots will last you near 20 years depending on how much hunting you do and will work out the cheapest pair of boots you'll ever buy. Also you can bury the head of a shovel easily without haveing sore feet the next day, LOL.
  20. Some say it's bad luck. There used to be an old rhyme about a crowing hen, can anyone remember it???
  21. right there Neil. Its a pity that the working of these dogs is consigned to history due to stupid laws etc.I wouldnt know anything about the early origins of the wheaten ,Glen ,kerry blue etc . but id imagine it took hundreds of years to get them to where they were in the 60s ,70s etc.Would you think the working wheaten of today is a shadow of what it was? (not a loaded question) .Its going back to when i was a child the last time i saw a proper wheaten(i.e not a small old english sheepdog type show dog). IMO there are a few wheatens today that would be good enough to have held their own
  22. I use the barryvox which I find 100% and we use the B+F too and like a lot of people I found that I might go to one side of the terrier but have got the knack now and am usually spot on. As for listening to the terrier? If a terrier has a good voice you'll usually hear him deeper than any bar and if he's mute, what's there to hear other than bumping. By leaving a locator lieing on the ground and watching it you'll find all you need to know about what your terrier is doing under ground ie. digging on or makeing room for himself. If you need to sink a hole to know what the terrier is doing th
  23. Gunner your probably right. 10 years ago there probably wasn't 100 working type wheatens left and less staffs (I talk of Ireland) but they were in the hands of proper dog men and were in no danger of dieing out. Nowadays there are any amount of wheatens and staffs of Irish lines. But there were probably better strong dogs 10 years ago. I haven't seen the book yet but I personally know a few of the names behind it and the truth will be told from experience and fact. Also these men have no profit to be made from telling it like it was about these dogs. Also these dogs deserve their place in w
  24. Gonetoearth, In the vehicle we always have a mattock (which we seldom use) ,we also have a hook (which we seldom use), we also have bars (which hopefully we wont use). Like I say, over used and over rated.
  25. so you all joined hand and had a séance to locate your terrier that had been to ground for hours and was mute , ear to the ground better than a t five or six inches in to the ground to listen prey tell all how you located your superior terriers and tube , trenching , not being a smart just like to know , as the old men many long gone , used them , and used them successfully yes the location systems of today are superior , but a t is still a Handy bit of history to fall back on , never dug by pylons , or a railways line and you bf goes
