Man fined for drowning trapped squirrel
neil cooney replied to salukiwhippet's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I agree drowning is cruel. But wouldn't it be worth it if you could afford 70 quid to bring a rat into that RSPCA officer who said that and ask him to inject it. Illegal to release so he'd have to do it. -
No they shouldn't because at no stage should a terrier be underground with another terrier, so how can a terrier learn from another. Everything a terrier does under ground wether it's finding, mixing, baying (or baiting as it used to be called) or running out with it's tail between it's legs is all down to one thing. It's breeding. Now wether this terrier decides to stay working in it's style or quits is often where the owner has an influence.

Melanistic rabbits are not rare. Any where with a good rabbit population will usually have 1 or 2 black ones amongst them. I've heard it said that keepers use them to show signs of poaching. I've also heard it said it's unlucky to shoot one. I seen one only last week and most species of animals throw the odd melanistic specimen naturally.

can you get jabs from Ireland??
neil cooney replied to Big_Al's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Yes they can be got but lets keep that a secret because the fact is that a chemist is not allowed sell them unless the buyer has a prescription from their vet. FACT. Vets over here have got that greedy that if you do decide to inject your pups BY LAW they still have to get their cut. I've dealt with the same chemist for a long time. Last time I went for jabs they asked me for my prescription. I went to a chemist 4 doors away asked again and got them. IMO vets have got that greedy that it's the animals that will suffer because of expense. -
recent rat captures
neil cooney replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
It's one of them so called multi catch I'm talking about. I have a few of them and for years have baited them on the hook. IMO to call them multi-catch is a sales gimmick. In 20 years of using them I always caught one at a time. But by putting grain on the floor of the trap I've 9 in 4 days. Only 1 this morning though. Like i say, I do have a couple of young terriers with me. If I wanted to sort the problem quickly then poison is what I usually use. -
A good friend of mine has whats considered the best specimen outside of SA. They are a very intimidating dog and take strong, stern handling. Boerbole means "farmers bulldog" as far as I know.

recent rat captures
neil cooney replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Nice pics Foxdropper and a job well done. At the moment I have a bit of a rat problem around my own fowl pens. As I usually have a couple of young terriers with me when feeding I've decided to use a live trap to try and keep on top of them. Instead of putting a bit of bait on the hook I sprinkle a bit of grain on the floor of the trap and am catching up to 3 at a time. What's happening is the rats are squashing in to the trap and feeding. Eventually one will hit the hook and close the trap. Anyone else ever do this? -
In the old days it was fieldcraft. Nowadays it's lamps, a vehicle, intimidation and company.

Unbelievable. And a bit of Metallica thrown in too.

reeves pheasants
neil cooney replied to dicky82's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
6 or 7 feet long thats impressive I remember seeing the photo and it showed one man holding the bird and 3 or 4 lads holding the tail. I thought they were holding it to stop the sellotape breaking,LOL but I shoot with a cousin of the lad who shot it so he confirmed it. -
bitches in season all the time ????????
neil cooney replied to oggy808's topic in Hunting With Hounds
I find some years that bitches are more fertile than other and as a hot bitch will bring in nearby bitches you are going to have several bitches in heat at all times. Unless dogs and bitches are housed seperatly not only will you end up with pregnant bitches your going to end up with dead dog hounds too. -
reeves pheasants
neil cooney replied to dicky82's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
As far as I know Reeves aren't illegal in Ireland as they don't crossbred. Chukars and a few types of partridge are however as they'll hybridise. But I could be wrong. There's a club near me that's been releasing Reeves's for a few years now and they sure are an impressive bird but I think they're as much a novelty as anything else. I do know that some people stopped releasing them as they were quiet aggresive and territorial towards the Ringnecks. The first time I seen a photo of a reeves in a local paper shot locally I thought it was a hoax as it had a tail 6 or 7 foot long. -
Congratulations and well done.

Very early for mushrooms, but they look delicious.

Do you mean did my friend turn around to the other fellow and say "you couldn't tell me where that terrier was stolen and by who?". I don't think he did. I only found out about this lately when I was being warned about the man with the stolen terrier. We don't know if he stole it. As for telling on thieves?? I've done it several times and it has got me in trouble including threats down the phone. As for Mushray??? Have you anything positive to add to a serious subject ? clown.

Turns out he was stuck in Sydney.

I know a gay biker who got lost in Austrailia.

P.S. Fionn, I don't buy or sell pups or dogs. Nor do I go 50/50 on animals.

First of all, who says I'm talking about Booth? I've never bought a pup of Booth. A fellow I used to hunt with did buy a dog of Booth before I met him. I think it's name was Whiskey. It had ingrown eye lashes which is a very irritating conditition and instead of bringing the dog to a vet he got his money back. As far as I know Booth sold the dog to the states. I think the dog could have been in a copy of E.D.R.D. The man in question who bought the terrier of Booth was only a messer anyway. Booth being a dog peddler would have sold many, many pups and adults to folk who would not have been a

Sad to hear of your losses, just for your own protection- The Irish stoat is fully protected. Mind you it is very rare to hear of them being a problem. -
Rat caching with my terriers
neil cooney replied to Leelyn's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I don't know what age you are but we had some of the lads out of the Merseyside W.T.L. club over and I think they organise some ratting and outings for youngsters around Liverpool. A good bunch of lads they were too. -
Remember years ago when you'd get some fool at a show who'd put ferrets down his trousers for a pint or two. Imagine the tickles off one of them freaks.

Sorry Tesco, to answer your question, Because nearly all cases of dog theft doesn't get reported to the Gardai I'm not going to say who's a dog thief and who's not. But in Ireland there's no secrets in the dog game and the scum employed by the other scum ALWAYS talk at some stage or another. That and the fact that dogs show up in certain mens yards, men get told to keep their mouths shut (they don't) and men get sold pups/dogs with a wink wink. Also the fact that they buy an adult terrier at a dog show in Cork and stick a fancy name on it, LMFAO, and half the world wants to breed from it
-
I'd need a bit more info as to whom you mean Tesco before I'd answer that. But as for the scum bag that I was to refering too ???? Well it's been more than a few years since several of us put it to the attention of a lot of terrier folk that he was robbing folk of their terriers, their stud fees, their pups for stud fees (all the litter died etc. etc.) and their pedigrees.Gosh, when I corrected him in 2005 or so about a dog he sold to the states for $2000 I changed half the pedigrees of black terriers in the U.S.A. Sadly for them over there now they've recognised the "patterdale" into their
