  1. Yeah mate rabbits are deffinately the main quarry with the ferret, for pest control and also as they are a good sporting quarry, and good meat for ferrets/dogs and yourself. Ratting is purely pest control, and a lot of ferreters wont have the back-up of a pack of eager dogs to mop up the bolting rats. You also need a very small/lythe and keen ferret to be any good at ratting. I was out today with my jills, and they struggled to push through into some parts of the burry. I desperately need a smaller strain to keep purely for the rats (if anyone has such a type, please reserve 2 jill kits for
  2. Thats not strictly true SS,its perfectly legal to use a terrier to fox to ground to protect game and wild bird, also its perfectly legal to hunt foxes to waiting guns, as long as no more than 2 dogs used. Also perfectly legal to hunt an injured/shot fox. Edit to add Its NOT Banned In Ireland, and the laws are also different in Scotland.
  3. aw Keeps, i knew as soon as a seen yer name that id be for a treat and i wasnt wrong! Cracking pics as usual! Really like the pheasant one! Well done Atb DnN
  4. Very good read, it sounds like there are plenty of them to go at over there! Keep at em and keep the write ups coming AND THE PICS!!!! If they dont like it, they shouldnt fecking look should they! Thanks for sharing DnN
  5. fair point mate But terriers exist purely because of earthwork, this is their true line of work. Yes they will take to other jobs, and do them well. So for me a 'working terrier' is an earth worker, a digging dog.
  6. DOH It always seams so far away from mine that I think im in another system altogether, so I suppose there may be grayling in other areas of the tyne, yet ive never caught one, or even heard of any being caught in North or South Tyne, would love to have someone tell me otherwise though.... atb DnN
  7. Good stuff Tallyho, at leat you knocked a few back.... well done that old terrier, still killing rats at 18 years old, that is very good going indeed.
  8. Ive caught a couple from the river derwent on the durham border, a few miles below the reservior. Never heard of any in the Tyne river system.
  9. Looks like a worker to me mate... good stuff!
  10. It probably will be all or nothing whin, the people behind this probably dont have a clue, and call the whole thing 'fox hunting'... after all it was the foxhound packs that were the main target for the ban. The rest of it just went down the plug hole with 'em!
  11. Most the ferrets ive had are the opposite if they come out and get hold of a rabbit in a net or dead by the box, they will try and drag it back down lol basterrrrds!
  12. A mole will only backfill a trap if it realises its there... the only thing the mole should touch as it comes along-is the trigger, and if it doesnt fire at that moment, then its gonna back up and fill the trap.
  13. If you want to go down the rescue road, it would be a safer bet in my opinion, to re-home a young lurcher. Hear far too much bad about ex racers, as they have had no such up-bringing, and will have no experience in the field. The winner of the hunting life lamping contest last year was a rescue lurcher, and a very efficient rabbiter it is too.
  14. What you mean?... like another plummer?
  15. Class... bush diving! haha Hes an awesome little dog...i like these little terrier crosses, they have great characters, and most are real tryers!
  16. There will be plenty of info on this site for you mate... from people who hunt the rabbit for food/sport and pest control. I fall into all of the above. Id say that to get the best results, you should go for a bushing dog, and a lurcher, instead of trying for a dog that will do both. As the busher is hunting the cover, the lurcher will be waiting for the quarry to break out. The dogs I use for bushing or hunting the rabbits in cover are spaniels and spaniel crosses. beagle/spaniel/terrier are an excellent cross for hunting the cover, and will likely speak on a hot scent, so alerting the lur
  17. If the traps are firing properly and dont have any foreign scent on them, then they should be catching if set right.
  18. saw it last year when it was on... was good, and two of the lasses really took to it like, shame the fit one didnt, but thats usually the case isnt it lol
  19. make sure the entrances are restricted to keep dogs safe... good luck
  20. Rabbit does work well for me, and I change baits when they loose freshness. But i'll use owt thats available like fish and other game and vermin carcasses, chopped up. An easy one that I learned from a stalker in the highlands, was that fishy sandwich spread, he used to leave it in his car for a few days with the lid part open, it really started to reek.. ive used it many times since to very good effect. A smearing on the top and bottom of the trigger plate. A small jar is around 50p and will bait around 10 traps. Hope this helps mate, the less of those buggers about the better!
  21. Iv never owned a pure grey, but my grandad did and they took all game locally... he said that the good ones were accidents waiting to happen, and he was always on about them being laid up for this and that reasons. He even lost a few when out working. He never rated them above a good lurcher.
