  1. Agreed! Ive seen the dam and sire, and these pups will make a good owner VERY proud!
  2. Scent, the correct term is Helmetdale!
  3. Ive put in several hundred acres of native hardwoods, with well thought out rides and glades, also clearings with bramble and hazel for browsing. All grant funded projects as well as creating wetlands and upland meadows with very restricted grazing at certain times of the year, which the roe love as well, as feeding areas. Cheers for sharing mate, its good to know other folk enjoy their conservation as well
  4. Great to see the borders doing what they should be doing! I live in the wee valley (redesdale) where the type origionated but even here they are not that common anymore... thatnks for sharing lads
  5. WHERES THE JOKE? sounds about bang on to me mate.... quite useful info really!
  6. im in sunderland Thankyou very much for the offer mate, but im after something newer, say 03/04 plate. Regards DnN
  7. Totally agree.... ive never even considered using glucose or any other stimulant, as wink hound said, a fit healthy dog will cope. I feed mine every evening
  8. my bull is terrible for losing condition through working hard, but plenty of fatty lamb on the bone brings him back quicker than anything.
  9. I would never advise a spaniel for air rifle shooting, as they are a hunting dog, and allhough they can be trained to walk to heal, it is not where they naturally should be, they are much better with shotgun in hand For air rifle shooting a retriever breed would be so much better suited. But as you want the dog to catch rabbits too, then as has been said, a lurcher seems the obvious choise, and id recomend a collie based type as they are steady and easily trained to walk to heal etc etc... Just my opinions based on my experience, as i keep gundogs as well as lurchers and other dogs. good
  10. Good question mate... I started with the bolt action, and soon became very fast at re-loading, but on buying a 10/22 i found it to be quicker still, and much more fun, as long as its kept very clean it will do most of the night without jamming. For solid reliability id say the bolt action wins, but for sheer speed in hectic situations then id say the semi-auto wins.
  11. JEEZAS man, talk about tarring everyone with the same brush ffs theres plenty half breds doing a good job of pest control with profesionals as well as genuine sportsmen!
  12. yup!! Well, their right though arent they.... i mean, a beddy or collie cross will handle it just as well... so why bother with bull?? lol ffs
  13. HAHA you nutter lol nice write up though.... ive had a good few encounters with the badger myself, but im not one for sharing these days!
  14. Similar to a lot of you here, mine and bftb's grandad was an avid terrierman and lurcherman.... my father is a keen shooter and countryman but the dogs seem to have skipped the generation.... i definately got my love of working dogs from my grandad.
  15. Alright folks Im in the market for a dog van, must be diesel.... astra van, focus estate, mondeo estate, caddy etc... no more than 2.4k, northern England, southern Scotland prefered any help will be much appreciated atb DnN
  16. Good going Chester, the dogs are looking in fine fettle! Oh, and happy birthday!
  17. I cant help but feel like he is f*****g with nature there for his own pleasure.... but then DEFRA will find it a piece of piss to trap the lot of them if they needed to cull that area, as he has been feeding them peanuts for 20 odd years lol messer.
  18. A widgeon whistle is a cheap buy and if used right, very effective.... also there is the brass one that can go round the neck on a lanyard, ive never had one but they are good, and no worries if dropped from the mouth when lamping. I also have a small wooden long range call from Acme, cost about a fiver, its like a hare cry, and will often bring a fox in from way off on the open hill up here. I still prefer my hand for close in calling though. I have some good ones on my phone, and have had some good succes with the rabbit, hare and fawn distress sounds. Some are better than others though.
  19. awesome collection of beasties you have there, love them!! and good camera work too, cheers for sharing. atb DnN
  20. Got to agree with the lamb bit rough coated, as my bull lurcher is renowned for losing condition through the hard work, and the only thing to bring it back sharp is plenty of lamb.... but the lamb i get has a high fat content too, compared with the usual rabbit and venison etc...
  21. Some strong looking beasties there Dean Dai.... any chance of putting a full body shot up of that dog? Cheers lads atb DnN
  22. I like this, hats off to the guy.... I used to hang all my vermin like this, but not anymore, all into sunken pits now for snaring foxes round.... My grandad used to have scores of BOP's on his too... back in the day like. Too many keepers having an easy time of it these days with the vermin control, especially the low ground lads that buy in poults.... some of em seem to have a big holiday from feb till july like, its a disgrace to the proffesion. Thanks for sharing mate atb DnN
