  1. HMR has no where near enough 'zip' for Fox, use it if you must, but please don't let the Anti's find out!! Get a centrefire 22 at least, 22.250 is the 'boy' be careful!! AndyF
  2. Just like everywhere else, the Firearms department staff numbers have been slashed to next to nothing, As we the shooting community can't see that going on and are powerless to do anything about it. The only thing 'they' need to be careful of is that they adhere to their statutory obligations. That said it's a double edged sword as they don't have the resources to look too hard at applications and variations. But hey ho?
  3. Not for me, cubs starving underground I don't think so, but it's up to you! Plenty of time to take them out later, later is good. AF
  4. When the 'experts' went down this road in WW2 they came up with the De-Lisle carbine a .303 Lee Enfield chassis but with Sub-sonic 45acp barrel + an integral silencer, apparently this was very useful and the Commando & Special Forces & SOE used it to great effect. Alleged to be good out to 150 yards and almost silent? Anyway I think I have seen Repro clones on the net, but good luck with the FAC variation? AF
  5. Not tried myself, but loaned my chrono to a .308 shooting mate, who tried all manner of USA inspired tricks (like drilling the flash hole out to get better powder ignition, to loading bullets point first). Anyway he found it very inconsistent and even the good ones dropped like a stone after 50 yards. Also 'they' say that very small powder charges in big empty cases can strangely cause high pressures? Sounds like a lost cause to me, best suited to large calibre handgun cartridges e.g. 45acp maybe try a pistol calibre rifle, I've seen a factory bolt action Ruger in 9mm?
  6. Yes, don't do it. You'll make your rifle more or less worthless, and the dipped paint rubs off on the handled portions. Camo won't hide anything, but it's yours to do what you like.
  7. Crappy Ammo. oh dear, I got rid of my HMR ages ago, noisy, wouldn't kill a fox, (just rubbish in my opinion) ammo with no powder is where you are you are bud, just the primer squirting the bullet 1/2" up the barrel. At least you noticed. A decent knock from the 'sharp' end with the cleaning rod (if you have one, again many don't cos a proper one is £40) they didn't mention that when they sold it to you did they? Good luck, get a 22.250 instead proper job.
  8. Target shooters will get a larger 'condition' on .22lr so as to get a 'batch' advantage. I have friends who are paper punchers who have 1,000 buy 1500 hold. But only on .22lr, the likes of me i.e. 'vermin control' etc have no chance (at least in the Devon & Cornwall). I don't know about centrefire as I don't target shoot, but guess it's the same?
  9. No chance of FAC rifle ammo being delivered (like a pizza) especially in the quantities you can buy. Regarding 'checks' in theory the police can 'check' how much and what type you have at home, in reality (at least in my 35 years experience) nobody ever checks anything! Unless there is another reason for you & your guns to be in the spotlight. You are restricted on your fac on how much you can buy and hold, however you could buy and 'stash' (illegally) tons of the stuff, as long as you only buy up to the amount allowed for each purchase. I suspect no gunshop on earth will not sell y
  10. It's not just the tube, the spring and sometimes the follower are different, also the tube on a 3 shot is usually crimped to make it only take 3, that needs to be removed as well usually by a special roll tool that un-does the indented ring. Just get an fac shotgun, it's not worth the hassle.
  11. I think they only deal through RFD's, so probably won't help you directly. Also when I had a barrel cut down re-thread job done (re-proof) it took ages to come back, 9 weeks if I remember. If it fails proof that might mean blown apart? Hope it's worth it?
  12. The bipod may be distorting the rifle forearm when you tighten it up and therefore affecting the barrel even if it's free floated, it doesn't take much to alter the strike point. I have a Ruger No1 and the forearm is actually fixed to the barrel, a bipod on board (Harris Swivel) moves the point of impact 2-3" at 100 yards as opposed to no bipod, worse than that it's inconsistent so I can't even remove it and then put it back on without re-zeroing. So guess what no bipod on the Ruger.
  13. £50 for both barrels sounds about right, I'd go for IMP CYL & 1/2 myself, those old baikal's have long thick barrels. Also maybe be a bit selective with your cartridges, for close up decoying 32gram 7's on felt wads would help even with the chokes left as is. 28gr plasi wads are not the first choice (mine anyway).
  14. Yep: I've got a Lock Top inside the main cabinet, only problem 'may' be that it is a bit small for centrefire ammo if you have more than one calibre.
  15. I was actually called by Devon & Cornwall in 2013 when I put in a variation for an additional rifle and asked "Do you want a sound moderator on this rifle"? I already had three others all with mod's on, as it was I didn't as I wanted a light carry big bore for 'walking' stalking so wanted to keep it as plain and light as possible. On my applications I just say e.g. .270 Rifle with sound moderator, reason 'wanting to shoot without hearing protection' that seemed to do the job here.
  16. 'so you saying a shot gun wont kill at 70 yards' Well no I'm not, what I am saying is that you should never shoot at a Fox with a shotgun from 70 yards distance, as much as Fox are a pest they deserve to dealt with in a humane and decent manner. If you don't believe (or understand) just draw a realistic size 'foxy' outline on a bit of cardboard, measure out 75 REAL YARDS then shoot your shotgun at it , even use 'Magnums' etc etc if you must? You'll be lucky to get 2 holes inside the outline, and that is what will happen if you do it for real, shotgun pellets are really starting to drop
  17. Assuming you have a 'standard' OU game / clay gun or a SS game gun, you don't need Magnums (but get some 2 3/4 heavies if you want), it's the shot size that needs looking at, I would say a minimum of No4 up to BB & AAA. The problem with big shot is you get LESS of them for the same charge weight (obviously?), so the pattern is less dense, but the pellets have more energy. From many years experience as long as you are close enough 32gr of No4 is plenty, foxes can't fly or run at 40mph so shouldn't be that hard to hit even if on the 'hoof'. Magnums are not magic thunderbolts that kill
  18. Don't go 'mad' with the crimp die, yes use one (I always do) but .222 and .223 cases are very thin so the crimp can really crush rather than crimp, don't worry too much yet, you'll see what I mean when you try it out. Other centrefire's i.e. 22.250 / .243 and bigger have much thicker brass on the neck sections.
  19. As a point of interest, the 30.06 the .270 and the 25.06 all share the same basic case, just the neck and as a consequence the bullet calibre change. The 30.06 was the original design. The other 2 are 'wildcat' developments of the original.
  20. For Deer I go down the bigger is best road, I shoot a .270 and a 7x57 (.284 / 7mm), I have yet to lose a deer and I've shot a few, my mate swears by his .243 but we have seen a few 'runners' with this, although we picked them all after a search. A boiler room hit with either a .270 150gr Sierra SPBT or a 7mm 168gr Sierra HPBT always works for me, most just fall like a lightening strike. Ammo costs are much the same, I reload all of mine but 'factory' .270 and 7x57 are easy to source, that said so are .308 & 30.06.
  21. Hi my brother in law lives near Fethard so I know the area around that way (I live in England). Small fields with high hedges hills and banks reflect the sound more than open flat ground, it may be that which is not helping? I have a SAK on my .22, it's as good as any other I've tried/heard, i.e. Parker Hale, Viame and even a Whisper, the SAK is cheap and effective not often that works out!
  22. I've got 2 vx3's one on a 22.250 and the other on a .22 rimfire, also a Leupold Premium on a .270. Both vx3's are excellent for my application, as they both have the varmint 'ladder type', reticules, so I'm not sure mine would be much good for your use of long range lamping as the 'ret is very fine and is hard to see clearly under the lamp, especially with a red filter which I use, both are fine in good light, and reasonably close at night. The scope build quality is top notch, and adjustments are spot on and repeatable, just make sure you get a suitable (ie thick enough) ret for your ne
  23. Look on Guntrader UK, a used BRNO captive bolt gun usually goes for circa £150.00. Need a slot on your FAC though.
  24. This 'downward' trend in .22 Winchester may well be the result of the American ammo shortage, causing all and any of the main ammo manufacturers to go to 'any' lengths to get production up, and profits made. Winchester (that's the 'real' stuff 'blue box' was made by Olin industries in Australia), I haven't seen the new stuff in black boxes yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they are made 'somewhere else' i.e. Mexico or Brazil typically and made cheaper and inferior? Anyway (smugly) I have a load of Winchester blue box, and some RWS & Geco all of which are superb in my Sako. I've found
  25. Yes 36 gr Alphamax or similar are fine, that said they'll kick something fierce in a light S/S, but you won't be firing that many. I used to shoot with a now disbanded Fox Beagle pack in Cornwall and most of us used Semi-autos, because of the reduced recoil when using heavy shells and of course 3 shots instead of 2 also the gun can be easily fitted with a sling to carry it with (as you do a lot more 'carrying' than shooting). We didn't have any issues using semi's, I have S/S and O/U as well and use these when game shooting, but Foxing and Decoying I always use my trusty old Beretta A 303
