  1. There are ruins of a mansion house on my shoot which once belonged to the Pryce Family, there is documentary evidence that Oliver Cromwell came to stay there on numerous occasions. There is also local evidence that in one of the fields on my shoot, the Cavaliers and Roundheads had a bit of a scrap. Also, we had the world's first passenger Railway in my home town, Catherine Zeta Jones was born here as was Karl Jenkins and Mal Pope. The oldest human remains were discovered here, the Red Lady of Paviland, thought to be 28,000 years old. Quite a few famous murders in this city, on
  2. Nice to see em finally hatching, hopefully not too many with defects. Hope the numbers keep rising too. Mine from the ex layers have only just gone in, be interesting to see how many I get again. Good Luck SS
  3. In that case, if there were ground nesting or rare birds on the ground then I would have shot him, but this I think is the point, If he is causing no bother on the ground then leave him be but if there is a chance he may cause future bother or needs controlling then he needs to be dealt with. Regards SS
  4. Yes, I think so. I am a gamekeeper so on my Shoot, foxes are my number one enemy. But there he is a pest to me as he is a threat to my birds. I also have a lot of crow shooting, and I dont eat crows so seen as the farms are purely crops, I leave him alone and let him eat the crows for me and Buzzard too. So If I had a lot of Rabbit ground with no shoots or chicken farms then I would leave him deal with some of the Rabbits and Rodents for me. Regards SS
  5. Yes, they are Silvertips, I think they only come in Ballistic Tip in .22-250 Have a look here; http://winchester.com/products/catalog/cfr...FJlbWluZ3Rvbg== http://winchester.com/products/catalog/cfr...FJlbWluZ3Rvbg== The Ballistics look good on paper, still holding on a fox at 300 yards with a 150 yard Zero. The Silvertip is coated in Lubalox, which is a type of black oxide, this should not foul your gun nor should you need to clean it overly between this round and normal ones, just clean as normal after your normal amount of rounds. Regards SS
  6. Its a Nikko Stirling Nighteater Jarvey, It also has a sidewheel like the Hawke, quite a few scopes do nowl Regards SS
  7. Just me being paranoid I think John, what these long nights in the chat room, your mind begins to play tricks on you! SS Good post mate, again, I was there! First time I've seen the Latin phrase "Ad Hoc" on here also! Cheers, D. Got to be a first time for everything, Ill use more know I think people will understand it Glad you enjoyed SS
  8. Finally in your hands then Jamie, Looks like you have a great set up there, now all as you say is to put some rounds through it. What Mod and Ammo are you thinking? Regards SS
  9. Just me being paranoid I think John, what these long nights in the chat room, your mind begins to play tricks on you! SS
  10. I had my first lot of Pheasants in on Sunday, ex layers. They had settled in fine and were laying eggs by the dozen, make very good omelets if you can get hold of them! Anyway, after chatting to someone in the chat room on here, I had an idea and just thought I would go and have a very late check to see if fox was wandering about looking for an easy meal. It was about 2:15 am when I finally got out of the house all loaded up, the farm is only a few minutes, if that so I would be there in no time. I turned into the dark lane and parked up. I strapped the lamp around my waist
  11. I thoroughly enjoyed the Welsh this year. I went on both days and enjoyed every minute of it, searching for the bargains and watching some truly excellent dogs. I met a few of the THL keyboard hunters there, though I managed to miss Collie/Grey even though she had 6 dogs in tow. And managed to embarrass myself on the the clay shooting stand with an 18/25. The demonstrations for most things were first class, shame they couldn't use live quarry Hope you all enjoyed and see you there again next year. Regards SS
  12. Just been browsing a few sites and the Hornet ammo here caught my eye; http://essexgun.com/index2.html Hornet is normally sold in 50 round batches isnt it? In which case 50p a go is not overly expensive for a good fox round, bit pricey for bunnies though. Regards SS
  13. I like a few things, I used to do a fair bit of swimming, not so much now unfortunately. I quite enjoy writing and general cultural stuff, Classical music, Opera and some poetry. I'm a fairly good chef, can make almost anything now, taken me a while to get like that. I do a fair bit of research into the flight patterns, migration and breeding of the Woodcock each season. Collecting old and unusual ammunition is starting to become compulsive too. Cant think of anything else bar the obvious. Regards SS
  14. My great hates on the road would have to be; People not indicating at roundabouts and generally not indicating at all. People traveling at 30 mph in a national speed limit area. I generally cant stand cyclists on the roads at all, they have no right to be there as they seem to think and while we pay road tax(which is meant to be for the upkeep of the roads, NOT for how much Co2 a car pumps out) they dont pay anything. Last thing I cant stand is back seat drivers, I am at the wheel and the person sitting next to me is telling me Im too close to the curb or close to the car in fr
  15. Well done young man, That stock will soon be sorted and you will be outclassing youre Dad with his 12, who said the .410 was a hard bore to shoot clays with?! And no doubt If I shot against you, you will beat me fair and square too!! Make sure you keep at it and keep your Dads cartridge bill in the €1000's Hope you enjoy your new gun Regards SS
  16. Nice Going there Mate, Its always good when a farmer shows his gratitude. And with the work comes an added bonus of Deer. Cant be bad can it! Well done and some greats photos. Regards SS
  17. I realise that you wont get Fox for a rimfire on a first grant. But if you want to shoot fox then you must specify it if you apply for a centrefire. I can see from your last post that you are applying for rimfire and so the Police are unlikely to let you have fox for it. Regards SS
  18. If it is a new gun then it may be stiff for the first 100 rounds or so and may not eject the odd cartridge, it will settle soon though. So there is no need to fire a bigger shell just to cycle the action. I know the 3.5" will most definitely do the job but is there really a need, I fired some 3.5" Winchester steel at geese and fair enough they killed it but I also fired Remington Nitro Steel 3" 32g and they dropped them dead too. Regards SS P.S Yes Deker, Tungsten Matrix 3.5" is £3 a shot, I'd be crying if I missed
  19. If you want a fox rifle then you will need to specify as such on your application form. Cheshire Police are talking b*****ks if that is true what you said. If you wanted a rimfire for fox then that is different as normally only very experienced FAC holders will get it. It doesn't matter whether they like it or not, if you have the reason then they cannot refuse. Regards SS
  20. Having been offered a Pike and refused as i didn't know what to do with such a bony fish. Does anyone have a good recipe if I am asked again? Regards SS
  21. I use a Blade Tech sharpener. Its very light and handy , I keep it on my keyring for when I need it. Puts an extremely sharp edge on my Opinel and as usual sharpens Carbon steel the best. Handy little tool for £10 Regards SS
  22. Thats great news mate, the more with an FAC the better and he is lucky to have you to teach him. Some schools can be very idiotic when it comes to signing the forms, my first SGC was granted without any reference from my school as none of the teachers of the time would sign it. I hope he does well with his new possessions. Regards SS
  23. Gamebore 3.5" Steel "Mammoth" would be around £16/25, Gamebore Tungsten Matrix 3.5" around £75/25 Realistically there is no need to fire a 3.5" load at anything. Im thinking goose is your main target, then a 3" shell with 36g of Steel in it will be ample, same with Bismuth, 3" 46gr is way more than adequate. It will save your pocket a great deal by using 3". Regards SS
  24. Yes John I get it, I have mine through the work I do, constantly keying and typing. It takes its toll. I have had a course of anti-inflamatories and the made it much better, I still get it after keying a large amount and the best thing I have found is Neurofen Extra (or whatever they are, the strongest ones) and Ralgex rubbed on the offending area. My colleagues are not too pleased with the Ralgex though!! Regards SS
  25. The Hornet is a .22 C/F but is a fair bit less powerful than the .222 It is a good round to foxes to 200 Yards, perhaps a touch more, and good for shooting in low noise areas. It will also comfortably take small vermin at range. The problem with the Hornet is that the ammo is expensive if you dont reload and if you want to shoot bunnies then you will need to head shoot. Also, it is a centrefire and so you may have to have mentoring, not sure how the Licensers deal with the Hornet as it is the lowest powered .22 C/F/ SS
