There is no subsonic ammo for the HMR only .22LR. Yes you are perfectly correct that with subsonic ammo there is no crack with a moderator on, infact with a .22 and subs there is no noise at all. But a mod on a HMR with reduce the bang but there is still a fair crack. Regards SS Have a look at Savage and the Sako Quad, Quad is around £450 but not sure of the Savage.

Not being Irish admittedly but I am very keen on the outcome of the referendum there. If the Good Irish people say no to the Lisbon treaty, you will be in high esteem by a great many people all over Europe. Get Voting! Just wandering how many not how you voted, thats up to you Regards SS

The American and the Varmint only differ in Barrel length and Barrel weight. The American has a 22.5" barrel while the Varmint comes in an 21" Heavy Barrel version, 18" and 16" Heavy Barrel versions are also available in the Varmint. I have an .17 HMR Varmint 16" which is screw cut and a SAK mod on it, I cannot fault them. I cannot think of a New gun in this range that is the same price or one which has a better reputation. As regards a Mod, you will never get rid of the crack of a supersonic round but the Mod does make a difference and it allows you to shoot it without ear pro

Shot a full length mirror with my Airgun once, Dread to think how many pieces it went into, more than 7 years ago though I dont salute Magpies, I do tend to shoot them on sight on my ground. I always think of the rhyme when I see them in the car or through the window though. SS

Moving up??
SportingShooter replied to thegreatwhitehunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As long as you have some land for your FAC you should be fine getting it granted. If you are thinking of Vermin then I would get either a .22 LR or .17 HMR And a .223/.22-250 for fox. The Ammunition for the .223 is varied in price and choice. .22-250 is more expensive unless you reload. You certainly shouldnt have mentoring on a rimfire but most forces will insist on mentoring for a centrefire for a few months. Its a pain but a fact unfortunately. For Vermin and Fox you will need expanding ammunition, this is where the bullets will expand on impact giving a bigger wound and -
Advice please....................
SportingShooter replied to martin's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
How long have you had your FAC martin? If you have had it 12 months or more then you should be OK. It also depends on how much you have used your rifles. They will know roughly by how much ammunition you have bought, They may not give you an Open ticket if you have only had it a short while, if so then you may have to bide your time. Regards SS -
If it is multi choked, there will be marking on each chokes tube. If you post these I will decipher them for you. Normally a 5 choke set will be Cylinder, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and Full. Regards SS

I am going to jump on the two rifle bandwagon aswell. I think that to shoot one rifle for both is asking a bit much as the larger quarry will be fine but when it comes to shooting Rabbits with a .223 then things may get messy. I would go for a .22LR and Mod with either a .223 or .243 for Munties. Just my two bob worth. Regards SS

Book on general shooting
SportingShooter replied to trappa's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
What sort of shooting are you into Trappa? There are many excellent books out there. If you are foxing then, Robert Bucknells, Foxing with Lamp and Rifle is a must. Rough Shooting, then, "Rough Shooting" by Mike Swan is good. If you want a good read and a chuckle then Gameshooting in the 21st Century, by Giles Catchpole is a goodread. Regards SS -

First off, I should explain. This topic is not connected to me, I have never nor will I ever shoot a fox with an airgun. I have just had a conversation with two members in the Chat room who shot a fox with an airgun simultaneously. The guns were a HW99 and an Air Arms Pro Sport. They took the shots at 20-25 yards. I have asked the two members before I posted this and they agreed to me doing it. I would just like to hear your views on this. Regards SS

Stoney Point Steady Stix™ II Shooting Sticks - Camo
SportingShooter replied to a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The enduring satisfaction of just sitting around firing a gun all day is one of the most pleasing I can find to date! No matter how many times it pops into your head that you are wasting ammo shooting at targets all day, your enjoyment always wins over rational thought. Glad you had a good day, John, take your mind off work for a few hours anyway. I enjoyed the read too. Regards SS -
The fox is a prize I hold in more esteem than a Deer. Well done Mate, nice shooting. Regards SS

The episode is The Grand Design. This is how it goes; Hacker: I've got an idea!, I think I can see how to do this! First we cancel Trident. Advisor: Yess Hacker: We don't buy Cruise either! Advisor: Yess Hacker: Then we reintroduce conscription! Advisor: Yess Hacker: Not only does it solve our defence problems, it solves out unemployment problems aswell! Advisor: Yess! Bernard: Isnt conscription a rather courageous policy? Hacker: Oh my God! Is it? No, No, No, In times of full employment it would be but now it would give unemployed young people somet -
Well Done Basil, Great to finally get your hands on it. Did you get a .243 without supervision on a first grant? TBH I am surprised you got a .243 at all:laugh: Mine wont issue them first time. Regards SS

After discocering the limits of my .222 for Fox shooting the other night, I have been looking into a larger calibre and I am almost certainly settled on a .243. I have looked at several models of Rifle and I would like to know what experiences people have of the Sako 85. I am looking for first hand experience from owners or those who have shot them. Regards SS
