Did your FEO hand over your certificate without you having any security? Not the Norm. Anyway, The most accepted and secured way to fix your cabinet is to drill into the solid brick or stone wall and fix your cabinet with expanding bolts. Once the bolts have tightened the cabinet should be as secure as is necessary, there is no need to have it fixed through the floor as well as the wall but it just makes the likelihood of any discrepancies more distant. You make me sound like a opinionated old fool No, Mr L is quite right, the only compromise calibre you will get to meet all you're requirements well is the .243. I only steered away from it as if you were to stalk Red Deer then your shot placement needs to be a bit more precise. .243 is you're only choice it seems. Just don't shoot too flat at the Sea with it or some poor Norwegian is going to get it in the Neck Tikka's are fine weapons too, friend shoots 100 gr to 58 gr and does extremely well. Regards SS

OK here goes, this list is not definitive but they will do the job. .308 Winchester 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser 7mm-08 Remignton .270 Winchester 7mm Rem Mag. .243 Winchester The .30-06 is too powerful I think for this work but have a look anyway. Regards SS

What do you all prefer to shoot?
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Looks like there is no shaking Mr Beretta from the top of this one, Quite surprised to see that the CZ's are not doing so well. Oh, try and get as many to vote as possible. Cant be only 32 members who shoot rifles on this site. Regards SS P.S Thanks John for keeping the post clean, -
I agree with that in some ways. There are no foxes on Shetland so thats out, I would still go for a calibre that is legal for all Deer in the UK as there are so many Reds on the mainland. A .243 will kill Reds no problem but you have to have your shot in the right place. That was my main reason for recommending the .308 for everything as it will give you the punch for Reds and along with it a better chance of Clean kills, which in turn boosts your confidence. I am still flabbergasted that Hornets are used for Seals, I know the professional Deer Stalkers back in the day used them t

The lastest mention of a squirrel cull has come back into the news, Personally I think it should be subject to a grant and dealt with once and for all, let our native species come back and thrive. Here is the story; http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7467702.stm Regards SS

Nice going there lads!! I had one about a fortnight ago which took me 10 days to shoot, I have another now, I have given up on trying to shoot him, Traps for a while now. Regards SS
-
I can see how that could be a problem Mr L One Rifle, one Calibre, All jobs is what you need really. Regards SS

I get it pretty bad and things are about to get worse when they start cutting the silage round here heavily. I have prescription tablets from the GP but they seem to have littel effect, that or I have become immune to them by now, I am seriously considering having the injection either this year or perhaps next. Curse of many im sure and the sooner a cure of some sort is invented the better. Regards SS

Don't think i'd use a rifle on Geese to be honest unless they were a real pest and then a headshot would be my preference, Shotguns are my weapon of choice, decoying Geese can be good fun if you dont shoot silly amounts but then if they are a pest shoot as many as come in. Whether that would work as well for Canadas on normal grassland im not sure. I doubt they would give a centrefire purely for shooting Geese but if he had for example a .308 for Seals and Small Vermin and Ground Game then problem solved. My main point in this thread really is that only one rifle is really needed. If

A Hornet for Seals, that is pretty shocking to me too. My FEO told me they will issue .308 minimum. Your HMR is more than enough gun for any of those you have mentioned, really you dont need a centrefire for them you are just spending money you dont have too with the expense of C/F ammunition. I would still go for a powerful Deer calibre for Seals, there is too much that can go wrong with a smaller calibre on a big animal. A .308 is pretty easy to live with, the .22-250 I agree is very flat but only because you are pushing light bullets at very fast velocities. A .308 throws a heavie
-
You have changed your mind on calibre then. Those animals are very big as you know and will need an awful lot of stopping power so I would not recommend a varmint calibre. Also, there is more of a risk of wounding with the smaller calibres on a larger animal, the shot placement needs to be exact. And seen as you're not going to eat them then why would a larger calibre matter, it just means a more efficient kill. I would still recommend the .308 , and you will still need a variation for Deer and the others. You'll lose all your firearms if you are found to be breaking the conditions

I have been thinking for while now about researching my family history, I have gone back to the 1850's and am about to go a bit further. Just wandering if many people have done this or have found out something interesting about their family members or family name? Any interesting relatives or surprising discoveries? Regards SS
-
It doesnt surprise me that they insisted on DSC, they are getting to used to doing that now. Sounds like a DSC to me anyway and 200 seems much more reasonable. In that case any reputable .243 will be a very good choice for all round Deer, depends in what you want to spend on a rifle really. Regards SS
-
500 metres is a very very long way to shoot at a Deer. I would say that the most the majority will shoot at is 200. When you say stalking license what exactly do you mean? There is no real need for a .308 for anything up to Red deer and even then a .243 would be adequate if the shot is well placed.

What do you all prefer to shoot?
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Indeed Deker, Mr Beretta seems to dominate most gun related items nowadays. I know people will vote for what they have but I just wandered if they liked them or have shot other guns which they aspire to own. Regards SS P.S Thanks for voting people! -
Trip out for anything and everything
SportingShooter replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Nice going there Mr L, and I enjoyed the read too. I recently saw a bunny obliterated in much the same way except with a .22-250 and a Ballistic Tip, gutted, skinned and headless for us. I hope you duly took the mick for Deker missing Regards SS -
You have to improvise with the mint then

I couldn't find a previous poll so here goes. I know we all have our views on which calibre we like to shoot but I am wondering what make of Rifle we all prefer to shoot, I will try and put up as many as possible. If you could say choose your top two? Regards SS P.S If you choose other could you say what it is?
