i am thinking of geting my FAC ....help!!!
SportingShooter replied to lampingking's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
What do you want to know? If you have the Reason, Land, References, Security and send in the right fee, as long as you satisfy all of these and have no major criminal convictions then you should have no problems. Depending on what rifle you want then you may be asked to have mentoring on a centrefire. When 17 you can buy guns and ammunition and go out on your own from age 15. Regards SS -
I have a Handheld Lightforce 170 Striker. Is there an adapter available which will let me attach it to my scope? Thanks SS

From what I can see they are in between the .17 HMR and the .22 WMR in terms of energy and velocity. It could certainly be used on fox especially, as stated, loaded with a V-Max or Hollow Point. The range would be limited though to around 125 yards if it lies between the HMR and WMR and they have much less energy than any other .22 C/F. Also, this is a relatively new round to be used by civilians and so the range of bullets and loading is probably not wide and I certainly have not seen any whilst shopping for rifle ammunition. Some others on here may know more. SS

Yes, you can and as said above you need to join the Fifty Calibre Shooters Association. The only reason you could have for one of these rifle in the UK would be target shooting. There are only a small number of ranges which are approved for the use of .50 BMG, one of which is Sennybridge in the Brecon Beacons. Regards SS

most popular deer caliber
SportingShooter replied to dan_hunter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
If I were to choose the top two then I would say .243 Win. and .308 Win. SS -
410 slugs if your shotgun can shoot them well are plenty for fox . it will knock them down like Thor's hammer dan_hunter I agree that they would certainly do the job but we would have great difficulty getting them for fox over here, they have to be a condition on a Firearms certificate and most police forces wont issue them, except for "practical" shotgun shooting. If you had a receipt or booking confirmation from the estate on the mainland, the Licensing department should grant you a ticket if they think you have enough experience. Transport, depends on your ferry/airline and their policy of carrying firearms. Do you have fox up there? SS

A week long Fox saga
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Oh definately Gary, there are four lampshy foxes there they will all be at is funeral!!! I am going to have to get on them as the boys who are there now wont do it, they cant be bothered to chase a spooked fox even though they have spooked it by firing and missing. Oh well, more frustration. Any new tips to get these lampshy ones anyone? SS -
Happy Birthday mate, have a good one SS

All moderators will need to be attached to the barrel with a screw cut. There are over barrel moderators and muzzle cans but all need a screw cut barrel to hold them in place. Good choice of gun IMO, I shot a troublesome fox with one in .22-250 last night. Regards SS

A week long Fox saga
SportingShooter replied to SportingShooter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well, I have a little bit of a feel for his rifle as I zeroed it with him and had a few shots with it then with a reasonable group. But I was still over the moon I had got him in the right places. Thanks for the replies SS P.S I will PM photos to people if they want, he was in a bit of a mess. -

As some on here know, I have had a week long vendetta with a particular fox that has found a food source in one of my farmers runs, he comes everyday takes a chicken and kills another. He is a bit unusual however. Unlike most foxes he doesn't seem to be habitual, he seems to come everyday at different times. This is why I have had such a long run with him because I could not catch him at the right time. Yesterday evening at dusk I had him on the lamp, he was gone before I could get the crosshairs on him but I had a few precious seconds to see that he only had one ear. To add insult to in

Within ten minutes of getting home today, I had a phonecall. One of the farmers who I shoot with was going to spread a little bit of muck and he just rang to tell me incase I wanted to shoot some crows, good man that he is. I went along within half an hour and he was just about ready to start. I walked along the lane, which is now almost darkened with the new leaves on the trees. After walking perhaps 150 yards, I walked through a gate and into a little field enclosed by trees. I walked along the hedgeline which borders the field which he was going to spread in. I found a suitable spot w

RIP larsen, rest in pieces!
SportingShooter replied to bigbulls's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
It defies belief, some people have no respect for property whatsoever. I have had people here trying to cut my release pens to pieces, bloody shame I was out lamping at the time. Saw them, how many etc, on the phone to the rozzers. Told them to keep sirens off, and Id meet them and take them to the spot. I did, and they encircled them arrested all of them for criminal damage and aggravated trespass. Oh Yes!, I was in a good mood, beaming from ear to ear all night at the chance to get some revenge! Sucks to them I think! Dull B*****ds. Gutted to hear about the Larsen th -
Ill be there. Only going on the Saturday unfortunately but ill be there early. Hope to meet up with a few of the THL keyboard hunters and put some names to faces. Anyone taking a gun with them for a crack on the clays? SS

I think all centrefires and rimfires for that matter have the same risks attached to them. If you consistently shoot without a safe backstop, the .243 is equally as dangerous as a .222 or less. But thats just how these police jobbies are. SS
-
The only thing I would say about the .243 over a .22-250 is that it is likely to be more difficult to obtain one on first grant. I take it your in Dyfed-Powys police force Pisces? It has happened to a few I know down that way and they had to settle for the .22-250 or .223. Just a Thought. SS

hushpower help
SportingShooter replied to ferreterwithnets's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Alex, The 20 bore fired with subsonic cartridges will be very quiet indeed and would make much less noise than a .410 fired with normal cartridges. Eley Hawk make .410 subsonic cartridges in 3" SS -
Despatch in the main but once shot a fox that trotted past me when doing the squirrel dreys, he was about 7-10 yards away. SS P.S A friend who is into his reloading , loaded some .410 shells with SG's stacked on top of each other, like firing a RPG through a pea shooter.

hushpower help
SportingShooter replied to ferreterwithnets's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The noise will only be substantially reduced if you use subsonic ammunition. The noise with standard shells wont be reduced a great deal especially with a 12 bore. The biggest difference you will notice is recoil, it will be reduced a fair amount. The 20 wont be much quieter for the same reasons. Regards SS -
If I were you I would seek a more popular calibre than the .204. Some swear by them but others have had a bad experience with them, especially with factory ammo, some find that homeloading is the only way to achieve a decent result. The .22-250 is a good weapon, as is the .223, the former having a slight edge where range is concerned. The ammo for the .22-250 is more expensive than the .223. If you are purely into fox shooting then perhaps look at the .17 Rem Mag. When you say the FEO and yourself agreed on the .204, did he persuade you or was this what you wanted all along?
-
It most certainly can but it tends to be more difficult to shoot things with it and means that in most circumstances you have more shot in the meat. SS
