  1. Haven't posted much this year, but thought today warranted a wee story. I put a share a days sport post in before xmas, and after an extensive selection and interview procedure , decided to take 'johnboy' out for a spot of ferreting. True to his Word, John turned up early, after a long drive. We made the ferreting ground by about 10.15 and met a shooting buddy there. We started off slowly, but after a spot on lunch, the runs started coming frequently, we bolted a lot more than we caught, the main problem being the proximity of adjacent warrens. They rabbits were able to ge
  2. Yep, my last variation was granted without cashing the cheque, I know this, because I picked up the gun, before they rung me to say the cheque had bounced, and would I be good enough to drop some cash off
  3. As a minimum you NEED Japanese Optics, It would be nice to have American Optics and European Optics if you can afford it. The rest is down to personal choice. I have been trying, buying and selling various scopes for 20 years....You must spend as much as you can afford!
  4. This was filled to the brim before last summer, and is now completely empty, I was lazy last winter, normally I would have another one the same in reserve.. I started filling again today for next year. You can never have enough!!
  5. Yep, that will do the job, but if you want to keep the burner going all winter, you'll need a few more of the same. That would be a week/2 weeks max in my burner going 24 on a slow burn. Once you have it on, you wont want it off
  6. yep, its just good to be out side, and if the opportunity presents its self when your out....so much the better. Did just the same last night with the rifle, just went out and was luck enough to get a rabbit and crow. The dog was lucky enough to get a 'follow' behind the truck, so she was happy too
  7. If you have reason for both, yes. The land looks ok from the pictures, but the only true judge of safety is you on the ground. There are good few houses, and the path which will affect their decision if you have to have land enquiry. Is the land passed for any calibres already. If it is passed, and you have the need you stand a good chance. Remember .22lr carries a ricochet risk, greater than .17hmr. 17hmr is louder and more expensive to run than a .22lr. They are different tools, with some overlap in uses.
  8. The old adage is.. If it splits well..........it spits well Start cutting now for next year, or cut up and chop previously felled or dead timber. Stack neatly, and remember to cut to a length convenient to fit in you fireplace. I use a stick with chalk marks on. Anything felled now, should be burnable for next year. Remember to save kindling and paper. Ask around at joinery shops for scraps. I get mine for free.
  9. I find it strange that anyone has ever weighed the load from a shotgun cartridge, as it has never occurred to me to dismantle one and weigh the contents...I stick them in a gun and pull the trigger. If I miss............i put it down to me But, if the loads are as different as yo speak, then it is a very poor show....but as SS pointed out...Not a surprise
  10. Well on first attempt today, with zero load development, My new little Hornet shot a touching group at 100 in what can only be described as horrendous conditions. Factory length, CCI bench rest small rifle primer, 13gr lil' gun, 35gr VMAX in a blizzard That'll do then
  11. My advice! Hornet, not the best choice, either as a round or more especially for reloading, the case is very small and frail, get a .223, more powerful, better in all departments and cheap to feed. I agree that a .223 is a better all-round cartridge..no doubt. But depends on what you need it for, if you are reloading, don't forget that the Hornet uses half the powder load of a .223. And in real life, how many people actually use the extra distance a .223 can offer? I have just got a Hornet to fill the gap between .22lr and .243 to use everyday, when the extra grunt of a 36gr
  12. The New Family Portrait..................From the top down Sauer .243 Classic Synthetic, Zeiss Diavari FFP 30mm 2.5-10 X 50mm PES Mod, CZ 452 Style .22lr, Leupold 30mm European 3-9 x 50mm CZ 527 American .22 Hornet with Nikko Diamond 30mm 4-12x56mm...and nice HANDMADE LEATHER sling Should take me nicely in to the next decade........The changes represent my first new gun in years, and the first time I have spent proper money on glass...and I like it I don't change or buy equipment very often...but I feel the addition of a Hornet to the line up is a change to make the shooting I do m
  13. Have shot its smaller brother on a Barnard 308, very good glass. I did consider on my self before my latest Zeiss and leupold purchases. I am shooting it again on Sunday I'll check with its owner for any caveats.
  14. I got it second hand, RFD'd up from down south, delivered to a friend of a friend with an rfd. It is in as new condition..£475, with 2 mags, rings etc. I looked at a lot of other rifles for a long period of time, and really held on for the right rifle.. I haven't shot it yet, but due to a complete change of scopes on 3 of my guns...I have them all to zero on Sunday. Looking forward to it..... I had a complete rethink of my cabinet.
  15. SO........it has arrived.............the base for the project. And......I like it.. CZ 527 Hornet American Took a while to arrive........i bought it on the 6th Of January. And just to show you how much of a departure this is for me.. 13gr Lil' gun over a 35gr Vmax vs 36 gr N140 over a 87gr BTHP or put simply 25p (currently) vs 60 p odd on the 243 Brought a few bits of glass, not sure whats going on what yet. Leupold European 30mm 3-9x50mm..probably the .22lr Zeiss Diavari 30mm 2.5-10x50mm probably Sauer ut the Nikko Diamond 30mm 4-12 x 56mm on the Hor
  16. Congratulations mate... Matty
  17. Nice one AA.......Congratulations. Just remember though, even in the rose tinted phase you current version of reality pauses in..... They are still the Horned route of all evil................and you will be fine
  18. I have just got the 3-9 x 50 30mm European for my collection, not sure what is going on yet. The reticule is quite fine, but the optics look good at night. Quite clear..just not sure what to put it on yet.
  19. I have a Hawke. 3-12x50 on a rim fire.................its getting replaced soon.. Its shite under the lamp. This will be the third or fourth scope on ma rimmies....still not happy, I'm getting ready to spend serious cash.
  20. So I'm a friend now eh???? go on then!!!

  21. If you are talking about a conventional, run of the mill 12ft lb air rifle then 50 yards is pushing your luck. Accuracy wise you should get touching shots with a HMR, and close to that with a .22lr at 50 yards!! This was 100 yards on a good day for me with HMR! (4 shots) It doesn't happen like that every time. CZ Silhouette, full length barrel, Sirocco Mod and saviour of the world, a Harris Bipod.....cheap old JSR scope though!! Not sure why your so impressed with yourself....You missed that coin with three shots!!
  22. The perfect macro lens is for sale in the Classified section................. Miscellaneous sales. Canon compatible sigma 105 mm dedicated professional macro... Works on digital. As can be seen here! Think of the opportunities this could give you!!
