  1. Depending on the PES model, it will unbalanced in my opinion. I have a PES Mod on my hunting .243 and it is very front heavy. The only reason it stays, is that it normally gets used on a Bipod off the landy bonnet, otherwise it would be GONE. (plus I am diverting funds to a new project) It is a heavy MOD, and if truth be known, I would expect that a MOD of that weight is affecting the accuracy somewhat, due to the harmonic effects on the barrel. It alters the point of aim down by a good 6". But..............It is very smooth to shoot, there is no tinniness from the gun, often seen on
  2. I have for sale a Bereta Silver Pigeon S, in 28" multichoke field. Still in original case, with all accessories, chokes, tubes, choke keys etc. £950 or may part ex for 12g of much lesser value such as Lanber, Baikal with Single trigger , ejector to throw in the landy. It has less than 1500 cartridges through it and is in Very good condition. Funds required for a new rifle so if the cash is right, it will be sold. Face to face only, or buyer to pay for RFD transfer. May also consider CZ 527 Hornet or similar in part ex. PM for more info or to view. Cash preffered.
  3. Cheers for the info CC, will have a look as the project progresses!
  4. yeah, basically... I want some fun. The .243 in its brutalist form is still costing 40-50p a shot, The .22lr is great fun, but limited range. I want to do a bit of sniping on rabbits and crows/, in a very large piece of safe ground to shoot. With occasional fox, without dragging the .243 out and without the nagging cost in the back of my mind. I want to improve my skills as a marksman and reloader.....it is one of those things that I just want to do. This fits the bill, Also, I have never built a custom rifle, so this will fit the bill there too! I have always described my self as a 'C
  5. Well, after a couple of weeks or research and investigation I have just put in a variation for a Hornet. I think that will be the tool to try first, then if it all goes to feck, re barrel as an Ackley .17. But I have high hopes for the little .22 And I am prepared to work at it a bit.... No rush................
  6. Good read as normal John. Glad some of us are getting amongst them
  7. No problem, it will be here if you ever want a look. I am in no rush to get rid off.
  8. Hi, not sure if your interested, but I have a Suzuki LT80. It is auto and a good runner, needs a new battery to be better. I used to take the kids around on it, but dont use it any more. It is not mint, One of the plastics are cracked, but mechanically it is good and it will always be repairable and spares will always be ravailable. You are welcome to look, it is in Dundee Matty
  9. Interesting chap........................Isn't he
  10. But it seems a lot of people do it, and with a lot of success and accuracy. A quick google of cast bullets and 22 hornet gives A LOT hits. Here's one: http://www.leverguns...co/22hornet.htm No one mentions fragmenting. In fact the only problems I've heard with cast bullets was leading in the barrel - reduced by adding a gas check and reducing chamber pressure. I'm not trying to be a smart arse, but have done a little reading on the subject and haven't heard it mentioned much. Is it a problem with all cailbres, or just the smaller ones? Also Corbin makes a tool to convert spent 22lR cases
  11. Have you tried R.Mcleods in Thame? And the small fee to have it delivered to your local RFD is likely to be more than any potential saving your are likely to make. Just doa deal with your local. That way if it goes Pear-shaped or you need advice..he is there! 14 LAMINGTON STREET, TAIN, ROSS-SHIRE. IV19 1AA. Tel: 01862 892171 Email: info@rmacleod.co.uk Fax: 01862 892859 its a little bit away, but he is pretty good! And we have had to ask him to sort a centre fire rifle out under guarantee, which he did with out issue!
  12. You are not able to cast bullets of this type. They are semi jacketed, with means the lead core is covered in a hard coating with is not possible to replicate in the home environment. Shame though!! Edited to add, they are jacketed to prevent fragmentation because of the high energy they are subjected to in firing and impact on the target.
  13. The true multi purpose gun, as already mentioned is a 28" Multi choke, single trigger, ejector O/u. In most makes, but Beretta if you have the money. If not Baikal are fine, lamber are ok. etc etc. The only reason I wouldn't get a semi (I have nothing against semi's) is in certain circumstances they are frowned upon. Nothing you list is a problem....but say you get an invite to a days driven?? Trying to find guns for freinds that own semis, when we are a gun short is a problem. Semis are great tools, but as an only gun, I would stay traditional.
  14. Yes I have mate, and your not wrong, its a tall task... I am without doubt the weakest link. But I have the hankering to try something off the wall! And I don't take you views as defeatist, I welcome all opinions as long as they are constructive! A reality check is sometimes needed on these things!
  15. as allready mentioned these small rounds are very accurate ..but very wind sencertive ,how about the step up to .222 or223 !! No doubt the round would do the business, but i was trying to keep it as cheap as possible as I don't need an out and out fox gun...I would just use the .243. I was hoping to get the load down to 0.20p. Hence, as small a powder charge as possible for reloading! But well see how the discussion progresses!!
  16. The reality is I want the rifle to be capable of doing it..... I am well aware that the real limitation will be the squidgy organic bit behind the trigger. This is not going to be my primary rifle for rabbit control, I have a .22lr for that. But I want a centrefire I can use everyday, with an accuracy level I wont get frustrated with! I want this project to be a challenge so that I can get my own shooting to a higher level... There will be a few hurdles to jump I am sure!
  17. Where abouts in Scotland are you? I'll tell you where to go to get a decent deal, as you can no longer buy over the internet. There are some good shops about, but there are some muppets who just want your money!! Matty
  18. ok........sense check. If I Set my expectation at 200 yards, will the Hornet do the biz? I only head shoot, so if I hand load and pimp the gun...headshots at 200 a possibility?
  19. Seems to be a bit against the hornet....that surprises me Never had one my self, so I have to consider the advice given. I thought they were a good accurate round. Now..consider it pimped........it must be up to it ?? Something else cropped up today, found a .17 rem fireball....ready pimped. Touching groups at 100yds?? now that only uses 15-17 grains in a load?? Bit more that a hornet.
  20. Thanks for that PNSE, perhaps when you have time you could give me an indication of cost and how you went about the build. Also, may be some accuracy details. I haven't ruled out the Hornet yet...so one question? Do you start off with a Hornet action, or something else? Is a CZ a good action to begin with? Cheers Matty
  21. Thanks Mr L. Do we think its a complete non starter? The reason I ask is I am not prepared to go down the route of .223, as even reloading it is not economical for the volume I shoot. I would only consider another rifle if I could get it to around 0.20p a round.. Is Hornet worse, better or equivalent to .17HMR in windy conditions? Whatever I shoot, has to be head shot, so accuracy is imperative.
  22. I ferret, I have a lurcher for rabbit control, I go to an organised shoot, I own 2 rifles and shotgun. ( I stalk, vermin control, fox control, rough shoot and pigeon shoot) and recently went wildfowling. So I would say I cover abroad spectrum of interests... I draw the boundaries at paying for my sport, not what the sport entails. I dont have terriers for fox control and I dont trap and snare very often. I only run my lurcher on legal quarry.
  23. I am currently looking for a very long range rabbit, vermin/ medium range Fox gun, and have narrowed down my choices to: 1. .22 Hornet 2. .17 Ackley Hornet. Why, well taking the reloading route, you can get 1500 rounds of ammo from 1kg of powder... Heads can be obtained (subject to trial for 11p) Primers cheep enough any way. So I reckon its not that much more expensive than .17 hmr, which is not on my list for this task. Chances are this gun would evolve in to a custom gun, as it is going to need exceptional accuracy for the task in mind. So a staged build is in order
