  1. Like DIDO l think Vulcan works fine. Thanks to the percieved wisdom spread by doomsayers the first time l used it l prepared for a 20/80 type reaction . Occasionally wasps from a ground nest seem to "fluff up" in a cloud but they just seem dazed and confused. I think we were lucky to have Ficam D as long as we have and not just because bendicarb has become a bit infra-dig . If it hadn't been for the Danish mink industry it probably would've lost its approval a few years ago . With that market gone thanks to Covid it was only a matter of time before the expensive approva
  2. You d'narf write some bollocks mate. The heart, lung and blood problems manifested before the vaccination program. I'm still paying the physical price of having Covid nearly three years ago. I know of others in a similar situation . The rubbish about attributing every death to Covid is another point worth disputing. The figures were for people that had covid at the time of their death, not necessarily that they died from it. As for dodging the vaccination ; well that's a personal choice . Though an ambulance driving friend told me that the only Covid patients s
  3. Well done ; it can take a few days for them to find the bait and ,depending on the ingredients ,it might take a few days for them to expire . If all the bait is gone now is the time to pop a bit more in loft ,or sacrifice ? a chocolate biscuit . If it remains untouched you can be more confident the problem is over. ?
  4. We had a neighbour who was mad on decorating his house at Christmas. When he died far too young everybody in the road decided to decorate our front gardens and houses in his memory every December . The children in the street get to see Santa and we collect three or four hundred quid for charity most years. This is the first year it has snowed on the day of the grand opening . My contribution was Jack Frost and a wooden deer. Hard to believe l was catching tench from this pond a few weeks ago.
  5. I have built prettier bikes? This last one ,modelled by a small Grandchild, emerged from the derelict remains of a 67 Bonneville and anything l could beg out of friends' scrap piles . I saw it at a bike show a few years ago and only recognised it from the number plate . As the photo shows the very hairy owner had done a little bit of work on it! This one is owned by one of my best mates . He didn't build it like this ; it just evolved over the 40 years of his careful ownership? This Yam Ycs3 was the pride and joy of a wayward friend from my teenage years. Now would you rob
  6. Ah it's actually a C11, but probably no faster than a bantam to be honest?. An interesting fact, well a fact anyway is that Steve McQueen really did own one ; in British Racing Green.
  7. Here is my last bike ( and l keep fighting the urge for another one ). I just kept it legal and running ,never bothered with cosmetics . It wasn't until l looked at the photos later that l noticed one Grandchild was doing a good and completly unprompted Steve McQueen impression and the other a Brando!
  8. I've had first hand experience of that. A friend took on a staff from a specialist bull terrier rescue organisation . The story she was given was that the dog was a big softy but the rescue kennels were overstocked and the dog just needed temporary lodgings until a permanent home could be found . My friend is no stranger to dogs like Bordeuxs and Belgian Shepherds and has staffs of her own . Within minutes of the thing arriving it broke its lead and made a bee line for a child on the other side of the stable yard. The child ended up in A&E. The rescue centre were in tota
  9. Yep, l've used them. They are fine. Like all chains they are as good as the person sharpening them .
  10. Today l spent a few hours on the bank . It was rather unexciting although a few small fish were daft enough to let me catch them Smallest and daftest of the lot was this minnow that managed to get inside my feeder . ?
  11. That sort of cirrhosis is quite common in rabbits . Without a vetinary inspection you'll never know but it doesn't look like fluke My money is still on the coccidiosis parasite but that's a good bet because all rabbits carry it . It affects little rabbits badly but as they age they aquire a level of immunity. After that the cocci and similar parasites usually only erupt to dangerous levels in older rabbits under stressful conditions. Which could include chills caused by damp weather and that rabbits' digestive system is not designed for wet food. Scarred livers don't
  12. I've always put it down to Coccidiosis .
  13. Fred Bear is one of the two " Names" that always comes up with bow hunting. I had no idea what he looked like . Howard Hill is the other one. Well worth a look! And l read that he is the archer who really did "split the arrow " on cue for the camera in the old Errol Flynn Robin Hood film .
  14. Stir fried pheasant with water chestnuts and quince . And part of my annual batch of mince pies for the freezer . They look a bit "rustic" because despite years of practice l struggle with gluten free pastry ( other half is celiac). Can't be too bad though because no matter how many l make they always dissappear .
  15. Who recalls when THL really was a hunting site ? When posts on the General section and the Running Dog section weren't just an excuse for the same old cadre of keyboard warriors to engage in boring winky measuring and widdling competitions ? When really interesting opinions were exchanged without childish personal rancour ? A time when serious hunting topics like the following dominated the forums........ Them was the days...?
  16. There's been a shortage of mushrooms in my area this year but l struck lucky yesterday .
  17. Not sure the Richmond Park herd goes back to Henry VILL but l could be wrong. Great picture of a moody looking buck?
  18. An embarrassing number of the animals we hunt in the UK are aliens; descendents of imported animals. Some were exotic curiosities, pets or farmed species that escaped . Things like Chinese water deer, muntjac, grey squirrels ,rabbits, wild boar hybrids and American mink are the ones that come easily to mind . Even blxxdy parakeets! Accidental escapes aside ; for better or worse an awful lot of animals were brought into the country to deliberately increase the diversity of quarry . It's not a recent thing . A starter- pack of breeding fallow deer from the Continent was consid
  19. Looks like bacterial ulcers . They may indicate a water quality problem . They can also be triggered by injury so an attack can't be ruled out but any illness or abrasion , perhaps from spawning activity, that damages the fish's slime layer can let bacteria in. Donning my Columbo/ Hercule Poirot hat : You say that the other fish are ALL fine . So none missing? That doesn't indicate a regular visit from a heron. Though one looking for passing trade can't be ruled out .As people are saying ; for a bird that happily hunts worms and voles in ploughed fields and f
  20. I've always wondered if perch figure in many repeat captures. They don't seem to . Not the bigger ones anyway.
  21. It is virtually impossible for a properly set Fenn to throw it's catch away . Operator error .... not knowing how a Fenn works is the cause .
  22. I shall console myself with the fact that the gudgeon were quite big . And also that this thread has provided the opportunity for a few ruffe fishy puns . I won't rise to the bait though by adding any more until l think of one that raises the bar(bel) ......?
