  1. Moses Smith , Martin Knowlden(?) and Ted Walsh too! Most of my old photos are in the loft but these were to hand. As a puppy ,looking cute and cheeky. And with my daughter ,looking a bit smug after a show .Though l can't remember what those prizes were for . Certainly not the show ring . A well known lurcher person once said that it was a pity that he didn't grow into his ears because he'd be five MPH faster without all that wind resistance?
  2. The box in itself is a possibly a bit of social history . I don't know if Metalrax is still in business but l'm sure G Wilkinson still sells hardware under the the Progress name . The phone number dates it to the early 1990s or before ;l think . The decimal price is another clue to its age. One price tag has the name Homemakers on it : l wonder if they are still in business . And with an original price of £3.99 that wasn't a cheap trap! You have to wonder what ,if any , rights there were to the J Duffus name . The patent must've b
  3. Escaped for a couple of hours in the afternoon of New Year Day. The stream was high and murky and the swim l chose was the best of a bad lot . It was a bit snaggy but at least it offered a little slack water under the rod tip. So l plopped out a lob-worm on a short trace below a running bullet and to my surprise l caught a roach ,a perch and a rather fine eel . All on the same worm and very welcome . I'm just a bit worried that by catching three fish on New Year's Day l might've used up my quota for the next twelve months . ️Have a Good New Year.️
  4. Nor is laughing (?)at One's own so called jokes. Or embarrassing guests from abroad . Especially when someone has extended the chance for us to extend our hunting interests. I'm,afraid l might not be Moderator material, but despite what you would like to believe to the contrary ,that doesn't remove my right to an opinion as to a Moderator's role .
  5. You know Wolfdog ; l've had cause to look into the odd US trap and fishing forum . Compared with the squabbling pixies on The Hunting Life US forum members certainly seem to know how to behave with decency and respect on line . And look at the categories on offer ; "Kids' writing and drawing competition." l doubt if some THL members could be trusted with crayons .
  6. I don't know how how common it is to bitten but you are right ; they certainly aren't rare. Any coat that's been hanging in my outhouse for a while will have a nest in it somewhere . T'other Half has on two occasions been bitten on the inner thigh while gardening. Once was definitely by a FBW . The second assailant wasn't apprehended but the wounds were identical . A sensible boiler suit tucked into socks has replaced the floaty hippy skirt for all serious horticultural tasks.
  7. Well l had my Daughter and the Grandchildren ,well the three Grand teenagers , over last night .It's a bit of an annual pre Christmas thingy . First time l ever provided more food than they could eat. They brought their dog which was fine until she decided playing card games would be more exciting for everyone if she jumped on the table .? It seems that eldest Grandchild thought it fitting to repay my hospitality by making me subject to an amusing feature on her phone. All great fun! I wish you all a good Chrismas and New Year.??️??
  8. Like the poem says ; fruit woods. Only thing is that if you're smelling your fire too much your chimney isn't drawing fumes .
  9. Caught in act of having poo( the spider not me?) Frost-proofing mole traps with local materials. And it payed off though the mole was still frozen to the trap This little soul woke me up, so 3am found me spuddling in the van for a trap. Funny that l heard the mouse running over the carpet but didn't hear the trap go off. Anyway only one of us saw the Sun rise. Hopefully this is the squirrel that was nicking the insulation from a customer's loft . Coupled with temporary fix to the soffet it seems to've done the job. I didn't really want to spend Cristmas checking traps
  10. It amazing what can be knocked-up with a bit of ingenuity ,a thermos flash and broken banjo .
  11. I always thought the Dust Stik was such a lovely simple concept that should've been worked -up a bit better. What iriot thought a heavy die-cast dust pot waving about on fifteen bendy feet of badly sealed poles was a great design? But with a bit of thought .......
  12. Like DIDO l think Vulcan works fine. Thanks to the percieved wisdom spread by doomsayers the first time l used it l prepared for a 20/80 type reaction . Occasionally wasps from a ground nest seem to "fluff up" in a cloud but they just seem dazed and confused. I think we were lucky to have Ficam D as long as we have and not just because bendicarb has become a bit infra-dig . If it hadn't been for the Danish mink industry it probably would've lost its approval a few years ago . With that market gone thanks to Covid it was only a matter of time before the expensive approva
  13. You d'narf write some bollocks mate. The heart, lung and blood problems manifested before the vaccination program. I'm still paying the physical price of having Covid nearly three years ago. I know of others in a similar situation . The rubbish about attributing every death to Covid is another point worth disputing. The figures were for people that had covid at the time of their death, not necessarily that they died from it. As for dodging the vaccination ; well that's a personal choice . Though an ambulance driving friend told me that the only Covid patients s
  14. Well done ; it can take a few days for them to find the bait and ,depending on the ingredients ,it might take a few days for them to expire . If all the bait is gone now is the time to pop a bit more in loft ,or sacrifice ? a chocolate biscuit . If it remains untouched you can be more confident the problem is over. ?
  15. We had a neighbour who was mad on decorating his house at Christmas. When he died far too young everybody in the road decided to decorate our front gardens and houses in his memory every December . The children in the street get to see Santa and we collect three or four hundred quid for charity most years. This is the first year it has snowed on the day of the grand opening . My contribution was Jack Frost and a wooden deer. Hard to believe l was catching tench from this pond a few weeks ago.
  16. I have built prettier bikes? This last one ,modelled by a small Grandchild, emerged from the derelict remains of a 67 Bonneville and anything l could beg out of friends' scrap piles . I saw it at a bike show a few years ago and only recognised it from the number plate . As the photo shows the very hairy owner had done a little bit of work on it! This one is owned by one of my best mates . He didn't build it like this ; it just evolved over the 40 years of his careful ownership? This Yam Ycs3 was the pride and joy of a wayward friend from my teenage years. Now would you rob
  17. Ah it's actually a C11, but probably no faster than a bantam to be honest?. An interesting fact, well a fact anyway is that Steve McQueen really did own one ; in British Racing Green.
  18. Here is my last bike ( and l keep fighting the urge for another one ). I just kept it legal and running ,never bothered with cosmetics . It wasn't until l looked at the photos later that l noticed one Grandchild was doing a good and completly unprompted Steve McQueen impression and the other a Brando!
  19. I've had first hand experience of that. A friend took on a staff from a specialist bull terrier rescue organisation . The story she was given was that the dog was a big softy but the rescue kennels were overstocked and the dog just needed temporary lodgings until a permanent home could be found . My friend is no stranger to dogs like Bordeuxs and Belgian Shepherds and has staffs of her own . Within minutes of the thing arriving it broke its lead and made a bee line for a child on the other side of the stable yard. The child ended up in A&E. The rescue centre were in tota
  20. Yep, l've used them. They are fine. Like all chains they are as good as the person sharpening them .
  21. Today l spent a few hours on the bank . It was rather unexciting although a few small fish were daft enough to let me catch them Smallest and daftest of the lot was this minnow that managed to get inside my feeder . ?
  22. That sort of cirrhosis is quite common in rabbits . Without a vetinary inspection you'll never know but it doesn't look like fluke My money is still on the coccidiosis parasite but that's a good bet because all rabbits carry it . It affects little rabbits badly but as they age they aquire a level of immunity. After that the cocci and similar parasites usually only erupt to dangerous levels in older rabbits under stressful conditions. Which could include chills caused by damp weather and that rabbits' digestive system is not designed for wet food. Scarred livers don't
  23. I've always put it down to Coccidiosis .
