  1. The film brings back memories. The pigeon vs whippet roadshow was a staple at country shows . To be honest the build-up was far longer than the race but it was crowd pleaser .?
  2. I guess the clue is in the Latin name Capreolus which means goat-like?. And a baby goat is a.......?
  3. Definitely a very valuable skill ,even more so with so many burrows sadly devoid of rabbits these days .
  4. They were always known as Siamese Fighting Fish. Nowadays they are usually sold under their Latin name betta splendens to distance them from connotations of Oriental gambling and animal fighting. The males were traditionally kept side by side in small jars to encourage them to engage in aggressive displays which aided the development of their fins . Yet they are rarely aggressive to fish of other species. In fact when my Dad and then l kept tropicals l can't recall any problems at all. We had them pair up and nest several times in the corner of a community tank. But a
  5. A selection from my last trip out . Amo ngst the underwhelming bits of scrap were a couple of interesting things. No idea what this slightly dished disc is. A blinker plate. The base of a pinfire cartridge. And a flintlock action .

    RIP

Nothing to do with Mystic Meg , but on Sunday afternoon l hauled out a couple of old Lynyrd Skynerd LPs that hadn't seen daylight for years. A friend's lad is a guitarist and wanted to borrow them to learn some of their songs. We also watched a couple of YouTube documentaries on the band. The conversation inevitably turned to the fact that the band members seemed dogged by tragedy and none of em made old bones . Blooming Hell , a day or two later it was announced that Gary Rossington ,l think the last original band member , had died . On Sunday!
  7. It's great to have a relationship with a landowner based on a bit of mutual loyalty . But it has to be considered that the reason a farmer overrun with rabbits lets someone ferret their land possibly isn't always because they like that person's face . The farmer wants to look over his fields and see less rabbits ,a lot less, possibly no rabbits . I'd be miffed if l lost permission through some genuine domestic or other unavoidable situation preventing me hunting but it is the farmer's land . And if he's prepared to risk paying for rabbit control he likely has commercial reason
  8. I was surprised by how much information about it is on t'internet . For instance the skull was retrieved from the woods for posterity because a neighbour of Mrs Twin paid her $15 for it . This adds another aspect to the story because the chap who bought the skull was a hunting guide who until then had held the grizzly record himself.
  9. I have it in an old magazine . I've just done the inevitable Google thing and there is a lot more information . Apparently she was a bit embarrassed and covered the rifle's cracked stock and the sticky tape securing the barrel with her hands for the photo.
  10. On the other hand. What was at the time the biggest grizzly bear shot fell to this tiny little sixty-something Cree lady . She killed it at six yards using a single shot .22 rifle held together with sticky tape . She wasn't even using long rifle cartridges.
  11. He was the result of an unwanted pregnancy .A stray lurcher ravaged a working collie bitch....?
  12. I think it might be different with " point and squirt" dogs that are just run off a slip. They are a sort of one trick pony. I try for a modicum of obedience and steadyness type training and once its hairing about days are over the dog can still be useful in other ways like shooting and ferreting . Or just a stressless companion.
  13. After chatting with another TFL member last night about his latest doggy exploits l had an urge to charge up the lamp have a wander with my geriatric lurcher . A bit hypocritical really as the conversation touched on my intention to let rabbit numbers build up on my permission. Still , in truth l didn't think we'd actually see anything let alone get a run . A catch seemed even more unlikely! I don't think l've taken the dog out with the lamp for maybe eight years ,possibly more , and the old chap is probably somewhere either side of fourteen . As l suspected , there was
  14. Oddments of venison ,rice, baked potato ,tomatoes and baked onions with ginger.
  15. I fished Windermere last Summer but only successfully for roach , bream and hybrids, rather than pike . Well l started off with an evening spinning from the bank, but apart from a baby perch it was a dead loss. The water was clear ,rocky and surprisingly shallow along the public access areas . There were public jetties that went out to deeper water that looked perchy/pikeish but they were decorated with holidaymakers at the time . Eventually l went out in my inflatable kayak and anchored in the middle of a bay about 100 yards from shore in about 5 feet of water. The place was
  16. Collars for the for the Mk 2 ( first version of the Disco Carrot) transmitters are rectangular and made of black plastic with the sliding battery compartment lid. The first "Mk3" collars are the same but made of grey plastic. The most recent "Mk3" collars are the round magnetic - switch type . All three will work with the old grey boxes and Star Trek Carrot receivers. Left; Mk2. Right ; early Mk3. The only proviso is that the black Mk2 collar ticks faster and kills batteries a little bit faster than the others. Hope this helps?
  17. Good advice . It's where fully subterranean traps prove their worth . Strychnine worked very well and was dirt cheap but is dodgy stuff . It has been off limits for a long time ,since 2006 if my memory serves . The efficency of gassing is affected by many variables and can work out expensive for equally variable results . It also requires a two man team , pretty thorough risk assessments and safety gear and the public would need to be excluded for long periods during and after application . Which could lead to even more aggravation. Covert trapping using a guerilla a
  18. I don't believe they are Chinese spy balloons. I think they are Russian . Almost certainly supplied by Roger Walters. The Amercans know it too. And that's why The Pentagon have ordered US citizens to prove their loyalty by destroying their Pink Floyd records.
  19. "Decent bream" ; too modest. They are crackers!?
  20. They spawn at the same time as coarse fish . There is a great little you tube video of males fighting and the winner getting his girl ?
  21. I know l've added a post but l think it might be a bit unfair to publicly speculate too much. Friends and family of the missing lady must be in enough distress without unproven statements being cast about . Let suspicions remain unsaid.
  22. They may've done something similar ,probably not with a dead cow though. Police will certainly have calculated weather and current and liased with the EA and Coastguards regarding flow and any debris hotshots. The River Arun in Sussex had a reed bed about four miles from the sea that was a corpse magnet .
