  1. I've kept game/ fishing logs since my teens. The early ones are just exercise books- up in the loft somewhere. Admittedly some things didn't go in there either because of life getting in way or they were "inappropriate" for some reason. Some entries are brief - " Shot like a blind idiot today", " One bite, caught a stick ,went home. Got wet." Others are pretty detailed. Though my rubbish handwriting and illuminated margins will limit their value as family heirlooms ?
  2. No it went off to be "properly disposed of" ie incinerated.Booked down as a sheep.DOH!
  3. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't the odd one secreted in the fortress-like homes of a certain class of rich people. A couple of cubs wouldn't be much of a challenge to be had via the same routes that bring guns, drugs ,illicit fortunes and even people into the country. Over 20 years ago an unknown billionaire of rumoured "East European" heritage bought a run down local estate. Not much was seen to done to the big house and rumours of Russian money laundering(only local supposition to be fair) were muttered. A fair number of interesting animals appeared in the grounds tho
  4. I know?"but they were too expensive" , so he settled for a puma for £250 . That was a fair bit at the time . I started work that year and it would've been getting on for six months wages for me
  5. I don't know what happened to it . This was just before the 76 Act . I can tell you from the newspaper report that the owner paid £250 for it . I'll not post the full articles until l've blanked peoples' names out. This is a start though. If you read the last couple of paragraphs you really have to hope it wasn't released!
  6. Everything was on micro film; If l hadn't had a rough date in my head l would've had to trawl through reels of the stuff. Once l worked out the mechanics of the viewing device the first front page to hit the screen was a winner! Then the thing made the second page the following week. And back to the front page a week later. Definitely don't worry ; this was nearly 50 years ago. Out of interest l internetted and found out that this sighting is recorded "on the list" .
  7. T'other half is a librarian . I gave her a date range and hopefully she'll pull some old copies of the local paper so l can see if my memory of the puma is reliable . There was a plaster cast of a footprint doing the rounds and one of the witnesses was a friend of a friend . But back then everybody and their Mum knew everyone . Something to do while l'm waiting for my van to fail its MOT this afternoon anyway.?
  8. I remember back in the late 60s and 70s mysterious puma and panther-like thingies were often put in the same cat...agory (so sorry?)as UFOs . As if they were some sort of out of place alien that didn't match any known species . If you are going down the alien /supernatural route this country has folk tales describing sinister monster dogs with glowing eyes aplenty . But back to this dimension .......My hometown had its own Puma scare for about two weeks in the mid 70s. The creature caused a brief stir and disappeared . Understandably the owner of a pet puma that lived a couple
  9. I've heard that ;it's quite possible as it's fairly close to the places they've been associated with . Also restricted access to quite large areas due to the airport and various security organisations certainly offers a bit of a haven to other " species of interest" . Not only that but these days it seems every other park and farm pets corner needs a wallaby or two and there are a few of these places in the area.
  10. I haven't seen one for a long time but certainly into my early twenties when l was still knocking about with a friend from school feral wallabies were a regular sight. He lived on a farm which was part of the demesne of a country house and park. One night he staggered home after an evening at the pub and blundered into a wallaby in his porch. In his drunken state and it being a pitch black night it took a moment for him to realise just what the creature was that was scrabbling to get past him . In the morning it was realised that the wallaby had been raiding his mum's veg
  11. According to Government guidelines if a non native species is trapped by someone competant in wildlife management it should either be turned over to an organisation or person with a relevant licence to keep it or humanely killed . So it is permissable to kill one . Presumably with a gun if that's the most humane way. The guidelines don't mention killing one that's free roaming. They just say it should be reported if it's on the list of "exotics". So l guess it would come down to the "reasonable excuse" defence if it ever came to a Court case .
  12. Yesterday l helped a customer's son zero his air rifle . He'd been given the gun- a really heavy Air Arms sidelever thing- but said he didn't think the scope was right because the cross hairs in the scope were different from the ones in the computer games he played. That's the modern generation for you! They had me confused too. They were set diagonally and way off target . Turning the scope in its mounts gave a "proper" sight picture and with some twiddling we were pretty much getting same hole groups at his intended garden squirrel range of ten or twelve yards . Th
  13. Bit like the exagerated report of a pack of coyotes that was supposed to haunt Epping forest in Victorian times. It seems that a single coyote was spotted but it was someone's pet and quickly recaptured. Two supposed coyote pups claimed to have been captured in the forest were identified as jackals. The suspicion was that someone had imported a batch of fox cubs for hunting and it contained a couple of 'ringers' to make up the numbers. I've no doubt that the " Estate/wildlife management " condition on my FAC would cover a feral raccoon but l sadly doubt l'll be wearing a Davy
  14. I know; although it went wrong is a " sort of good thing". It is totally waterproof too! I know that because l tried soften it in water and it just sat there like is was waiting for me to stick a few flowers in it. ?
  15. He was only a little Shetland ram?
  16. From a ram's balls to a tow ball,?. Excellent??
  17. A while back l oak tanned a bit of deer skin and made a passable knife sheath . My latest effort wasn't quite as successful. What was supposed to be a soft leather pouch has ended up as a hard leather pot . I must've over estimated the time it needed to soak in one or all of the tanning baths . I boobed basically but kid myself that it's "All part of the learning curve ", rather than a stupid mistake . And I guess having a ram's scrotum on the mantlepiece could be a good conversation starter !?
  18. Just how old are you sonny? What's your interest in shooting? Are you or have you ever been on this site under another name ? Are you an anti? Are you an AP ? Is there a reason that you didn't using the Introductory section to announce your joining of the forum? Despite having made few posts why are so many of them incitive ,inappropriate or negative to the image of hunting ? Are you just a troublesome twink pimping himself out to his own ego for Internet kicks? I apologise to decent members for interrupting this BBC thread but make no apolo
  19. Not dropped hard enough. A wrong'un .Hopefully his days ,hours or preferably minutes are numbered as a site member.
  20. Was called the BSG or something similar? I don't remember having any choice .We were just lined up at school in alphabetical order and jabbed. The lad in front of me was the class hard case. It was almost his turn for the needle when he turned to me and said "Fxck this l'm off", and ran away! He stopped bullying me from that day on.
  21. I read that too. I always had giggle when he started appearing in Listerine adverts ?
  22. Trying to please everyone . OH is really into winter veg at the moment. Her youngest is a protein gannet due to his competive bouldering activities. Her oldest likes mild chillies and curries. So; beef mince ,shoulder of venison, potatoes ,rice, swede, carrots ,puffball, peppers , baked beans and weeny bit of pepper ,chilli powder. Forgot to mention , two of em are celiac so labels on shop bought ingredients , even on spices , have to be checked carefully. They'll just have to fish out the bits they want .
  23. I thought that too. Looked to me that the rider was keeping the horse pretty tight . Neither of them panicked . It might've saved a bit of bother if she hadn't pulled the horse up when it tried to crush the dog though.
  24. Actually you may be not far out. Neither might Sir David . Fawn The word fawn comes from Old French. ( l'm no expert ; just happen to have l a couple of really old dictionaries) which comes from Latin . Seemingly originally a term for foetal , newborn or suckling offspring (Hence the term "fawning" for sucking up to someone), it could apply to many species but stayed in common use as the generic word for an immature deer . Hunting terminology might use fawn more specifically but it seemingly is valid to use it in a wider sense. It would be a very archaic but not i
  25. You are welcome but l have to admit that few of the Fighters we bred were anything close to the quality of the shop- bought fish . In other words we were bumbling amateurs?
