  1. I've never dug a rabbit with one of my own dogs but I have dug them digging on in tight tubes and bollocked them for 'rabbiting'. I did once dig 2 rats in a stop end with one. A young dog only gave a slight mark on the lead so I let him run through and got a mark at 2 ft, dug down and he was digging up a tiny tube. Pulled him out and a rats head appeared, it jumped out and was away. Then another appeared and it only made it to the edge of the dig before my mate volleyed it into kingdom come! Lol
  2. My biggest influence showed me a different viewpoint to the way that I looked at it. That it's not always black and white with terrierwork and that its as much to do with the bond between you and the dog as too how far and how much success you can get from the dog. Also not to be too hasty with a dog and give it plenty of time to mature and progress before making any rash decisions. Lads that put a dog down at the first opportunity don't impress me and rarely have anything of note in their kennels.
  3. Im not on facebook, but some pics on there that my mates have shown me are ridiculous regarding working terriers. Lads bringing unnecessary attention to themselves and to the past time we love for the sake of a pat on the back is embarrasing.
  4. I never realised you did the mating Mik. How did they turn out and did they make decent sizes?
  5. The problem with the Meindl Dovres and the Lowa Extremes is theyre made for walking comfort and have a spongy type material in between the sole and the boot and any type of digging soon damages the sponge and is very difficult to replace. Id be looking at Glockners or Hanwags if you're doing any digging. Also footplates on the roundmouths make a world of difference.
  6. The problem with the antis is they're people haters rather than animal lovers. They're total nutcases that do anything to disrupt society be it building wind farms, laying new train tracks, fox hunting etc the list goes on. There is no reasoning with such people so trying to get on their wavelength is a waste of time.
  7. It's a fine line between life and death at that stage I think. Dug one of mine dead after hearing him about 5-10 mins before working away. Worked on him for about 45 mins to no avail unfortunately.
  8. I was thinking the same. Mine's 9 wrinkles and an inch on a good day! Lol.Fair play Mik I hope the dog makes a full recovery and hasn't suffered any lasting damage.
  9. He has a chapter in Darcy's first 'Now thats what I call Terrierwork'.
  10. That does look like heaven. The day I can go for a walk at the back of my house and have a dig will be the day I'll be content with my lot!
  11. Looks a nice dog. I take it he's a steady type?
  12. That dog screams Work! Any particular breeding?
  13. Its the same with every terrier breed, not just Bedlingtons. I was at a gamefair last month and showed my non-descript black working terrier and was astounded with some of the terriers on show. Showy, shitty things that have never seen work and to my eye never looked like what I imagine when I think of a Patterdale. With that shower of shit about it won't be long 'til the breed is on the decline.
  14. Good old pic mate. That must have been back when the Plummer was created or thereabouts?
  15. On my jollys at the minute so hopefully be full steam ahead once I'm back. Managed 2 digs and killed one on top before I came away.
  16. My mate had a dog he bred himself last season. From an early age it was a screamer on a lead wanting to be down holes, used to whine and bark on when tied up on a dig. Once it come of an age to try, it went in for a couple of minutes and was straight back out. Refused to engage anything underground. We tried him all season in every scenario we could. Big earths, small earth, drains, artificials the dog just wouldnt work. The final straw was him marking a single hole drain that ran in a straight line for about 30yds to a stop end, only 10" deep. He duly marked it so me and another mate sat on t
  17. He seems a handy tyke Mik. All the Jim breds seem to have a natural retrieving ability for some reason. Dilly did mention adding some spaniel blood way back so that could have something to do with it?
  18. Nice dogs. Just how I like them. Strong and thick set.
  19. In his book he had all different shapes, colours and sizes from his blood so impossible to generalise with such a statement I think.
  20. Despite what we think we smell and what an earth looks like, a terrier knows the difference between scent of an animal been and gone and a live animal still moving and breathing within the earth. My eldest dog is a sure marker on a lead, Ive been to numerous earths with him that are kicked out and stink to high heavens and hes said 'no'. And then other lads have said theres gotta be one in. Let their dogs run through and sure enough they declare it empty. The difference then being if we'd took notice of the first dog we'd have been away leaving the earth undisturbed but because of the doubt th
