  1. The problem with the antis is they're people haters rather than animal lovers. They're total nutcases that do anything to disrupt society be it building wind farms, laying new train tracks, fox hunting etc the list goes on. There is no reasoning with such people so trying to get on their wavelength is a waste of time.
  2. It's a fine line between life and death at that stage I think. Dug one of mine dead after hearing him about 5-10 mins before working away. Worked on him for about 45 mins to no avail unfortunately.
  3. I was thinking the same. Mine's 9 wrinkles and an inch on a good day! Lol.Fair play Mik I hope the dog makes a full recovery and hasn't suffered any lasting damage.
  4. He has a chapter in Darcy's first 'Now thats what I call Terrierwork'.
  5. That does look like heaven. The day I can go for a walk at the back of my house and have a dig will be the day I'll be content with my lot!
  6. Looks a nice dog. I take it he's a steady type?
  7. That dog screams Work! Any particular breeding?
  8. Its the same with every terrier breed, not just Bedlingtons. I was at a gamefair last month and showed my non-descript black working terrier and was astounded with some of the terriers on show. Showy, shitty things that have never seen work and to my eye never looked like what I imagine when I think of a Patterdale. With that shower of shit about it won't be long 'til the breed is on the decline.
  9. Good old pic mate. That must have been back when the Plummer was created or thereabouts?
  10. On my jollys at the minute so hopefully be full steam ahead once I'm back. Managed 2 digs and killed one on top before I came away.
  11. My mate had a dog he bred himself last season. From an early age it was a screamer on a lead wanting to be down holes, used to whine and bark on when tied up on a dig. Once it come of an age to try, it went in for a couple of minutes and was straight back out. Refused to engage anything underground. We tried him all season in every scenario we could. Big earths, small earth, drains, artificials the dog just wouldnt work. The final straw was him marking a single hole drain that ran in a straight line for about 30yds to a stop end, only 10" deep. He duly marked it so me and another mate sat on t
  12. He seems a handy tyke Mik. All the Jim breds seem to have a natural retrieving ability for some reason. Dilly did mention adding some spaniel blood way back so that could have something to do with it?
  13. Nice dogs. Just how I like them. Strong and thick set.
  14. In his book he had all different shapes, colours and sizes from his blood so impossible to generalise with such a statement I think.
  15. Despite what we think we smell and what an earth looks like, a terrier knows the difference between scent of an animal been and gone and a live animal still moving and breathing within the earth. My eldest dog is a sure marker on a lead, Ive been to numerous earths with him that are kicked out and stink to high heavens and hes said 'no'. And then other lads have said theres gotta be one in. Let their dogs run through and sure enough they declare it empty. The difference then being if we'd took notice of the first dog we'd have been away leaving the earth undisturbed but because of the doubt th
  16. Out of interest how much per net mate? And what are they made from?
  17. Ive always used single peggers and the catch ratio has always been good enough but Ive got mates that say you miss nothing with double peggers so I'm going to try them in the future and see how they go.
  18. Nothing is 100% with terriers, its all about the trust you have for your dog and knowing the dog and how it works, acts around earths etc etc. Neil youve been at it a lot longer than me and what youre saying does make sense. But thats just the way Ive seen it done and the way I like to do it. When on big old places with plenty of holes I 'll leave the dog off and let them do theyre own thing but the majority of average earths I'll see if the dog marks on the lead etc. first.
  19. You could spend longer than that for a dog to be checking empty earths I think. Everyone has their own ways I think and there's no rights or wrongs aslong as your getting results. Everyone up around where I live has the same method of keeping the dogs on leads, like I say because its a time saver more than anything else. Obviously you'll get the times where the dog gives a slight mark (fresh scent etc) and let the dog run through to make sure but not on every earth. Ive no idea why some dogs mess around or 'ghost' in earths like you say. Is it because theyve been encouraged to enter by an
  20. I disagree with that Neil. I've had and seen other dogs that can tell you whether theres one at home or not. It's about watching you're dogs attitude change and what their different mark is. Some whine, some pull soil back, some just freeze on the lead and cant be pulled away etc. It depends how you raise your pup I suppose. Some let theirs run empty earths and run loose with the locator collar on etc. I like to be strict with mine and when out hunting keep them on the lead etc. Theres not as much game up around me and if you let them run empty earths youd be wasting a lot of time. A marking
