  1. Car wheel rims are the best ones I know, add some scrap steel and a few welds and you have a fire pit and cooking grill. I make and sell them on our campsite and they work really well.
  2. I live in a cabin I built myself, no telly and probably % meat or fish I eat I caught. Got hens and now some sheep. Not really subsistence as I work but I try, can't be doing with the veggies etc though as they're cheap enough in the shops. I like isolation which is hard to come by in the south east
  3. Thanks Kevin, that'd be great. Len - I'd love to do that. Sadly not something I have access to locally
  4. Lol, thanks for the advice TC. I'm interested is all. What made me think about it was spending the day teaching the Mrs to fly fish on a stocked water and being desperate for her to catch so she'd stay interested. Someone said to try powerbait if all else fails and I'd never heard of it so had a look online. I have bought some to experiment with, just another string to the bow
  5. What's the best way to fish it? According to youtube the yanks use a sliding lead with a swivel then vary trace length and rely on the baits to float it up. I assume that'd work here? Is the juice any good for dipping flies in when things get dire?
  6. Bought some little yellow balls, we'll see how they go. Are the red worm ones any good for coarse fishing?
  7. Your lucky to be where you are, I'm sure you guys have things you moan about but when you do just remember how much more annoying they would be if you were here lol. Tight lines!
  8. What's best, the baits or the dip?
  9. Cheers lads, can't imagine it being approved of on a stocked water but might be handy elsewhere
  10. The xenophon book is available as a free download. Heavy going but interesting stuff
  11. I've read the series Penny, I enjoyed them all although a bit heart breaking at times. Do you know if she ever worked the lurchers she kept?
  12. I read an really interesting bit in a historical novel by Robin Young describing a hunt in Ireland at the time of William Wallace. Either the author really did her r0esearch or knew a bit about hunting. The description was of a hunt for red deer with hounds and running mastiff. It's incredible to think that most manor houses kept a pack of hunting dogs a full time huntsman as a matter of course
  13. It's not a available according to amazon. That terrain is incredible is those clips, pretty sure mine would break a leg pretty fast!
  14. Thanks, lots of info here. I read that one of the main exports of pre roman britain were hunting dogs, the other being slaves. I've seen alot of cur looking hunting dogs when living in zanzibar and, much more rarely, some saluki looking running dogs. I believe they hunt small antelope and pigs with them but must be slim pickings as the island it's very populous and anything that moves tends to get eaten. Does anyone know of any books or sites that would be of interest?
  15. Does anyone know much about them? It fascinates me that, since man domesticated dogs, there must have been so many truly tried and tested hunting dogs. Literally from the dawn of time until the modern world interfered. It's a subject I'm really interested in but know very little about. Can anyone enlighten me?
  16. Hilux for me for work and running about. But use wife's Peugeot estate for motorway miles. That said I drove the hilux to Ireland earlier this year
  17. As above, collection from sussex
  18. A little off topic but how is your jagdx coming on Dan?
  19. Can't understand why people flap so much about the price of puppies. What else do you buy for a few hundred quid that lasts 10+ years? It's going to cost that to feed and maintain the dog each year so why flinch at spending it in the first place? The puppies sound good, I've just got a pup in or I'd be very interested. Good luck with them

    Under 15Tts ?

Sounds good to me WM fair play to you, sadly don't reckon I'll be retiring at 42 but I'd like to!
  21. I work for myself in my own workshop which was great as could work anytime to fit in around hunting. Business got too good the last few years and now have a guy working with me who wants to work normal hours so I have ended up doing the same. I miss the freedom but shouldn't complain really.

Im jealous, I want a night job
  23. Mine are done, have been from pups. I'd sooner deal with the consequences than lose the dogs.
