We were discussing that on the way home last night, trying to work out if we could justify spending more than the price of my .243 on a windy gun, I know they are a fine piece of engineering but bloody hell they are expensive

So longshanx took me to one of his spots last night for a bit of bunny bashing, a walk around the farm to start with, a few about but with the wheat and the beans still up they soon vanished into the crop, so after a couple we headed down to a cut rape field with a cow field to the left, again just a couple along the edge of the cut but when we got to the cow field “JESUS “ the place was covered in them, now this field os sat at the back of a holiday park so with the rimfires we are a bit limited as to where we can shoot, so trekking around so we could shoot down towards the rape field we mana

They have been banging this drum for a while now, they say they want a formal review, who do they want to carry this out, Natural England ? ? there’s only two sides to this and they are those who want to go down Mark Avery’s road of rewilding allowing all predators to thrive and wipe out all other birds and mammals and them that understand that we don’t live in a rain forest and as the land has been farmed and managed for centuries it needs to continue and if this is done correctly it give us the chance to harvest some fantastic produce from the land and if people are willing to pay for this h

A lovely bit of sport in the wind, looking at the weather you might get a few days at it ?

I’ve never been a massive fan of howa, but I suppose it’s personal choice, have you looked at the tikka T3X varmint, new they are about £1100, I was thinking of putting 22-250 on my ticket and if I do this will be the rifle I buy, I have the T3X lite in .243 and it’s a superb rifle ?

You can’t shoot any game birds on Sunday’s or hares, in some parts of the country you are also not allowed to shoot wildfowl on Sunday, but this is a really old law and only affects certain areas, anything else, fill your boots as long as it’s carried out in line with the general license ?

Yeah he was as a bit leggie and he was off as soon as the lamp hit him

So me and the long one had a trip up to the shoot for a go at the foxes, apparently next doors shoot took 4 last night, so heading over to the cut barley and rape we thought we were in with a good chance, sadly when we got there the farm lads were still working the fields and had been most of the day, bailing and muck spreading , we gave it 40 mins or so with the caller at the bottom of the rape field with no luck, moved up to the barley with the same result, I think if we had put in a night shift we could of produced a couple from here but sadly we have to work for a living, heading back to t

That’s the game shooting I like, I’d take a day walked up ruff shooting over driven any day, that’s not to say I don’t enjoy a day or two on the drive pheasant but what I do like is running the beaters, understanding where the birds will be and where they will go and putting proper sporting birds over the guns, something I also like to do now and then is give my stand to a guest preferably to someone who has never shot anywhere like our shoot or has never shot driven birds, doing this has ment I’ve met some cracking people and has given me some cracking shooting experiences that I otherwise pr

It is really long out in the field but short around the edges, we also have a big field of cut barley next to the rape stubble that would be ideal to draw them into and it still has the bails in it to shoot from failing that we could take longshanx.308 with the FMJ’s, that’s a joke long one, we and not turning this into a war movie ?
-
Never put it down to a fluke, with the fantastic mouse rifle and your superb marksmanship it was a sure thing ?
-
Fingers crossed we can draw a few from the plantation into the stubble, I’ll definitely be giving the butto call a go, I’ve only managed a couple of cubs up there this year so there’s definitely a few still about, I’m taking longshanx with me tomorrow night for no other reason than the flies get to him all the way up there before they reach me ? don’t forget something to cover your head long one them flies are mental up there this time of year ?

I’m not sure myself, I think if we have a mild winter they will stay around but if it’s cold I think they will wander for the deeper cover on the boundary of next doors shoot where we have lost birds in the past, this is of course all just speculation as they will always do the opposite of what you think they will do with a bit of luck them gingers will be making the most of that cut rape over the next few nights ?

In the 8 years or so that I’ve been involved in this shoot I’ve never seen it change as much as it has over the last two seasons, the amount of timber that has been removed over a short space of time is unbelievable
-
Well it comes round quicker every year, with the birds due to go in after the weekend I’ve been up to the shoot to sort the electric fences out, with us been a small shoot and not having a full time keeper our birds go in a bit older and a good few weeks later than the larger shoots, all that’s left to do now is the fresh water and now the oilseed rape is down sort the foxes out between the 3 of us that shoot them up here, the lad on next doors shoot is out tonight and it’s my turn tomorrow, over the end of winter and into early spring, forestry have been thinning the timber out over much of t

I’m sure he’s on one of my permission’s there, the limp wristed tw*t, git orf my land ??? -
You should give the reason that you pay for stalking and require a .243 and an open ticket both the .223 and the 22-250 are very capable fox calibres, if it’s cheap you are after go .223, I really like the 22-250 but that could be because I’ve never owned one and always seem to like things I don’t have ?

Trying to put a smile on his face ☹️

Out on our weekly therapy session tonight and as the crop is starting to come down I thought I’d give him a go at the foxes, telling him he would be behind the .243 we arrived at the cut barley, where he produced the biggest bi-pod I’ve ever seen and continued to tell me that he was going to fit it to the rifle so he could sit down, I told him that he wouldn’t see over straw but he seemed adamant that it’s ok and as it was his night I let him get on with it, I took the mouse gun to bag a bit of bait and did so as soon as we arrived, with the land been as big as it is I’ve started baiting up t -
How far apart were they, you may of created the first .410 to shoot like a punt gun
-
That seems to be the case over this way, I’ll be giving it an hour on the cut barley later, it’s the first time in a very long time we have found fox earths on that land
-
We are the same over this way, we are waiting for the rape to come down around the shoot and a couple of farms, everything is running a bit late this year with not getting long enough breaks in the weather over the last week or so, all the barley is down now so that’s giving us a few to go at, it must of been a good year for them as there’s a couple of places that we only ever seen the odd one or two over the winter where they have now taken up residents
