  1. Spend whatever you want or can afford on a scope for any tool. Simple fact is there are some perfectly acceptable dusk/dawn scopes available at sensible prices that can deal with rimfires ranges perfectly adequately. It is not all optics either, the construction of "centrefire" scopes is generally better and the weight usually goes up, this is not required for rimfires as they are much kinder to scopes! At the end of the day nobody will stop you putting 2lb plus of Nightforce on your rimfire if you want to, but even if I was Bill Gates I wouldn't! ATB!
  2. This is a tricky one as I always advocate gun cleaning, but these are rimfires, not centrefires, this sort of damage to a rimfire is not common, and you will have noted many on this site NEVER clean their rimfires or take their mods off!
  3. I think everyone else has said it but another vote for SAK!
  4. Baiting almost always works. Choose your spot and the time, commonly mid/late evening, depends on time of year, location, etc. Rabbits often work but then so to does a bowl of dog food, and this gives you time for the shot while he eats it rather than picking up the quarry and running off with it. They can also be trained to turn up at quite specific times!
  5. Near standard, forget the top its a .17HMR. Then 2 x.22lr and finally a .22WMR. Nothing more required, they are tools, do the job and work!
  6. Yes, when he gets to 17, as long as he is under your control and you are the occupier, my lad often used any and all of my tools right up to .308 before he had his own FAC/SGC! It's a bit of a read but worth it, Shotguns and Rifles. The LAW...... EXEMPTIONS FROM THE REQUIREMENT TO HOLD A CERTIFICATE Shot guns Section 11(5) of the 1968 Act allows an individual, without holding a shot gun certificate, to borrow a shot gun from the occupier of private premises and use it on those premises in the occupier’s presence. The presence of the occupier is normally taken
  7. Again, this has been subject of no end of discussion. The general consensus is that the spirit of the law, where it states "land owner or his agent" refers to someone who has the right to shoot over the land, so someone that the holder of the shooting rights has given permission to shoot qualifies under that. It doesn't have to be an employee, as long as the holder has permission to shoot over the land. The term generally used for this is "Occupier"
  8. You will never get a consensus on this one. Scopes, reticles and magnification are so personal and also influenced by land, distance, quarry, ability, experience, etc, etc. I shoot a fair bit with a variety of tools at assorted quarry. I don't go looking at vast distances and the majority of my shots are under 200 yards with a handful between 200-300. 300 yard plus shots are very rare for me except at the range. For day or night I am easy with 6x out to 200 yards and very rarely shoot any distance over 8x or 10x, even 600 yards at the range. It gets so personal, a pal use
  9. Specific sections of the firearms Acts have been quoted on this several times historically, I'm sure a search will turn them up. The answers above are the precis versions and accurate. As always it's in the detail but go for it!
  10. Over the years I've done this several times with various tools, including, .22lr, HMR and centrefires....and 2 pheasant with the 12g. I've only knocked down 2 rabbit with the HMR once, they were about 30-60cms apart and offset. The 17g bullet fragmented and a piece fluked the other rabbit.
  11. Some may well (perhaps a lot) but certainly not all! ATB!
  12. Life goes in cycles, sites, forums, sections, come in and out of favour, and this field work we do has a tendency of being unpredictable. The same questions get asked time and time again. People drop in and out! Who knows!
  13. My first was a breakdown Shotgun Cabinet, absolute pain in the arse and soon got a sensible cabinet!
  14. It's common, very few have a dedicated shotgun for every discipline!
  15. It doesn't matter what the tool, there are always those that want to push the boundary...actually most of us if the truth be known...... Know your limits and have some respect!
  16. Good read as always John... Had a bad one last night, not sure why we even bothered, the fog was bad, as we arrived Mr L set the lamp up just to see how bad it was, and first thing we saw was a fox..lamp with no gun attached ...lucky fox! Didn't see any more all night, actually we couldn't see more than a few yards generally anyway, early night! ATB!!
  17. Anyone who has AUTHORITY to give you permission. Guys, it isn't rocket science and you are not going to find the answer here, you need to ask the Gamekeeper if he has authority, if not the landowner!
  18. Just how high do you intend to mount your scope so that you can make full use of any iron sights fitted! Not clever for accuracy from your scope, it should be as close to the barrel as sensibly possible, therefore see through mounts don't work!
  19. Anyone who has AUTHORITY to give you permission!
  20. There isn't a great mod for a HMR, or WMR come to that. I have tried loads of mods on them, including centrefire mods. I found the DM80 (older model) to be the quietest...JUST, the trade off was it was the biggest and heaviest! If anyone tells you I have an X, Y or Z mod and it is miles better than a SAK they have a problem with their ears! .....and you are right about the Whisper, complete waste of £125!
  21. It is of course, also one of the relatively few left handers available to!
  22. We all have a view but anyone who has any experience knows that is daft, the .22lr is the biggest selling calibre in the world. Any calibre can ricochet and you need to be careful with EVERY shot of every calibre, saying you want a HMR because it does not ricochet as much as .22lr is NOT a valid reason unless you can demonstrate unsafe ground. In simple terms, if you say you want HMR over .22lr to the FEO because it is safer, he will think you are an idiot who reads too many forums! ATB! thought it may not be a valid reason on it's own, surely it won't harm your application
  23. What's a URN number? Its basically the number the police assistance desk give you when you phone up to tell them you are out lamping. Normally I only do this if I am going to be out and about near a residential area. Thanks. It actually means... Unique Reference Number
