Is 22 WMR a little over kill for rabbit ?
Deker replied to CUPCAKE118's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Which part of WMR is a problem for rabbit, ammo is cheaper than HMR and a 40g HP WMR will tend to make less of a mess of a bunny than a 17g Ballistic Tip HMR. The 40g HP WMR is also rather useful for the fox! 30-32g Ballistic tips available for the WMR which fly nearly as fast and flat as a HMR, there tends to be a wider array of ammo available for the WMR than HMR so arguably more versatile. Headshot bunnies should be straightforward at 100yards with a HMR and all but as easy with a WMR. Cracking round! If you are talking bunnies to 60-80yards(ish), then no need for anything -
NONE!!!

What white flash?? Are you talking glares from the lamp? Why would you see this only when you fired? If it is muzzle flash them moving the lamp isn't going to help, are you using a moderator?

My CZ Silhouette HMR was probably the first sold in the uk, it came from the first batch Edgars got and I picked it up minutes after it arrived at a major Dealer, cost me £265 (full length barrel) but I still got a slip and box of ammo thrown in! There are always deals to be done if you are in a buying position!

Flippen ek, why did you dig this up? 3+++++ years old???? Perhaps a new thread would have been in order! HMR is not cheap, dealers often run deals on various brands, and Hornady 17g Blue tips have been a good price for a while now, if you can still find them, suggestions of £150-£160 per 1000, never bought any quite that cheap but done deals at £170 and £180 per 1000.

Unless you take the easy option of storing the rifle moderator down! It is often useful in cabinets to store rifles top to tail anyway. Possibly the best option is both....clean the mod AND store it moderator down!

What range to zero my .22LR?
Deker replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
What chart? 18 yard primary zero 40 yard zero = 10 yards / -0.73 20 yards / -0.17 30 yards/ 0.08 50 yards -0.41 100 yards -7.75 18 yard zero = 10 yards -0.59 20 yards 0.12 30 yards 0.51 40 yards 0.58 50 yards 0.31 100 yards -6.31. Simple to understand? John John You are joking...right???? LOOK AT THOSE FIGURES!!! You are comparing a 40 yard zero to over a 50 yard zero. An 18 Yard zero DOES NOT give you less drop at 100 yards than a 40 yard zero, all else being equal! Simple to understand? -
recomendations on variation
Deker replied to valleyshunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
.223 if it is just fox .243 if you think deer as well I find both my .223 and .243 useful! (and the .308 has it's moments!) -
What range to zero my .22LR?
Deker replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
WELL BLOW ME SIDEWAYS! I've been shooting .22rf for twenty odd years and the above has taken me by surprise. I've run the data in Sierra I6, Exbal and quick target and an 18 yard zero gives less drop @100 yards than a 40 yard zero, by 1.3" I've just fitted a new stock to my .22rf and was going out to zero the rifle, guess at what range! Top stuff Andy. John Please post the chart or link, that does not make sense! Are you talking 18 yard First zero or True zero? The bullet falls from True zero so how could it possibly fall less from 18 yards that from 40 yards?? -
I really don't know what the best moderator is, and I guess best will depend on the individuals interpretation and requirements. ALL my centrefires have a Predator 8 COMPACT fitted, I make no suggestion this is the best moderator, but in my view it offers the best package of weight, size, balance, sound reduction, versatility, spares, stripability, price etc going, so arguably for me it is the best!
-
just curious are you supposed to take it off the rifle after use? cos i never do You are looking at potential issues of corrosive crud falling down the barrel or onto the crown if you don't. More prevalent in centrefires than rimfires. Alternative is to store the gun barrel/moderator down!

The MachII will not do everything a .17HMR will do. Phrases like BETTER are meaningless, on that basis a .243 or .308 are "Better", the HMR is NOT a better round than the MachII, it is different. The HMR nevertheless hits harder, is faster and flatter shooting and noise wise there is little or nothing in it. If that is a definition of better so be it! ATB!

IF you have to chose one rifle for fox the I would probably suggets a Hornet or above. Fortunately I don't. I have 7 FAC tools ALL conditioned for Fox including .22lr, .17HMR and .22WMR. These are ALL very competant in stopping dead a fox in the right circumstances and I have a lot of call to use them in all circumstances from peoples back gardens to, barns, stables etc etc. Blanket statements that these are not up to fox is down to circumstances and experiene and not true. 50 yard baited fox next to a hotel garden and pond and 20 yards from drinkers in the garden! .17HMR b

No idea, and I run a few Berettas, probably as well to talk to GMK..... http://www.gmk.co.uk/ they are usually quite good in responding!

There is NO legal requirement for a DSC and there in no specific requirement for a Deer Mentor either, however, the odds are you will need one or the other before your region allows Deer on your FAC, maybe even both! I just got my variation through for a 243 for fox and deer and dont need to have dsc or mentor ,all they did was phone the farmer to make sure I was allowed to shoot deer on his land.Hope this helps buddy and atb on your application. You are fortunate..is this ALL deer species? I too was fortunate some years back and I have no DSC at all. Makes you wonder

Hello dazzz how much for the 5 shot where are you located mate and are they 22 or 17 cheers B.. Ditto!
-
It's a subjective view, the obvious response is why are they crap rifles? The WMR hits harder than a HMR and makes a bigger hole doing more damage, there are several ballistic tip rounds available and they fly very fast and flat and accurately. They are very close in accuracy to a HMR, (Take a look at CCI, http://www.cci-ammunition.com/) and compare HMR and WMR equivalents, and the WMR ammo tends to be slightly cheaper than HMR. I find them more useful on several quarry than a HMR. But then I have a .22lr, .17HMR and a .22WMR to select from!
-
yep the plot thickens so to speak!! We go round and round and round on this one, if your region condition your FAC for .22 Rimfire you can buy .22lr or .22WMR! If they mean, and only want you to have .22lr, then they should condition your FAC for .22lr and NOT .22Rimfire!

How long is that piece of string?? I'm not trying to be funny but there is no normal time, it can be days to months!!
-
Most everything here is a sensible approach. If nothing seems to work the option is a gunsmith or a vice. You may well end up destroying the T8 but barrel/thread/crown will be recoverable. Good luck!
-
I don't have any issue with that, PM me if you are interested. Cheers
-
They are .223 size and load not military spec 5.56! They shoot well enough in my T3 .223 but as we all know different barrels like different ammo, bottom line is they will not win anyone an Olympic Gold Medal, but they work perfectly adequately for me in the field and have dealt will plenty of bunny/fox/deer! Oh yes...and they cost 20p each...you can't reload anything for that.
-
The twist rate will not be effected, zero will almost guarantee change, you may drop a fraction of speed/energy, take a look..... http://www.accuratereloading.com/223sb.html Cost for a cut/thread/crown/proof is likely to be heading toward £100 at best, in some cases a lot more, without proof a bit less!

Lockable containter for ammunition.
Deker replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I guess it's me being dumb again but I'm a bit confused, are you talking shotgun or rifle cartridges, there is a significant difference in the law? Did your FEO not inspect your cabinet/storage arrangements at the time of Grant? Cheers Hi Deker, I'm still waiting for the grant of my FAC, but already have a cabinet for the shotgun and air rifle. I understand the rifle and it's ammunition must be kep secure, however home office guidelins state I need a seperate container for the ammo. I have a heavy duty safe which should do fine, I just don't want start drilling it to things.
