We are mixing up professional and amateur here big time. Mole trapping looks easy on the face of it, anyone can do it......yeah right. I say this in the full and certain knowledge that I have been doing it for years, and one of my guys still makes me look like a beginner, hence why I leave him to do most of the mole work. Simple though the technique may seem, the reality is it is a skilled job, Experts make it look easy! Screw up and you get trap shy moles which makes them harder to catch! Yeah, anyone can buy a trap and have a go, they may even catch one, as Stubby has said tho

Browning Buckmark V Ruger 10/22 ?
Deker replied to courser's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Your choice and you get what you want, but the obvious question is........ Why? What do you want it for? Impulse buys are seldom a good thing! 10/22 target heavy barrel...sounds like it doesn't know what it wants to be...there are far better target guns and far better rabbit guns! ATB! -
Browning Buckmark V Ruger 10/22 ?
Deker replied to courser's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There are very few bad guns out there these days, the Buckmark could be viewed as a bit of a novelty and the 10/22 is acknowledged as the highest selling semi...lord knows why as many seem to throw much of it away and then trick it up! If your mind is set on a semi then I rate the 511 very highly, but if you want a bit of out of the box action for no money try these! Mine was £150 brand new! As it comes (edit, I fitted the studs) a little work later It is actually one of these, but considerably cheaper. -
Live Trapping Squirrels
Deker replied to Coursing mad 24's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
With all due respect that comment suggests you have not tried to shoot many lose squirrels in a live trap! Combs have to be trap specific and are not always that helpful either! -
Cotton wool helps... I cannot get by with cans of any description, simply hate them, I use ear plugs, lots available and generally not too bad a price. Whatever you want/can afford/suits you! Anything is better than nothing!

Closest I would trust is Neil Mckillop in Mortimer, he does all my work these days. 01189333100 mckillopeng@Hotmail.com

Crumbs, I've just had mine back from the last recall, seems a tad odd, and yet to be ratified I note. Remington is by far the largest rifle manufacturer in the USA and their products are pitched at an affordable level. Their rifle actions are well respected and used for many other custom rifle works. This does seem a serious expense and a massive blow just the same!

It seems a pretty basic question any professional should know the answer to, but the mass of legislation/rules/guidelines we have to follow are changing all the time, and try as we might it isn't always that easy to keep right up to date, especially if you offer a full range of species and method Pest Control. He suggests he thought he read something about this, we all have our moments!

Fox Traps , Treadle Plate Or Pull Bait System ?
Deker replied to Coursing mad 24's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Treadle type in the vast majority of domestic type environments, they need appropriate maintenance/setting to ensure they work appropriately, but they work much better than pull bait types when you have a bit of dog/cat food, or biscuits in a bowl as bait. This type of bait tends to be more domestic client friendly than many pull baits as well. I don't have any issue with the effectiveness of the treadle, the main issue (if any) as with so many animals/traps, is actually getting the fox in it to start with. Whatever works in the environment you want it to work in is the real answer. -
The Result Of Amateur Pest Control
Deker replied to Mr Wasp's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I had a panic wasp nest job a couple of years ago, they had just moved into a loft space and were very active........ Turns out there was no wasp nest but the owners had just had bees professionally removed and left the honey, the wasps found it PDQ and there was an awful lot of activity as the wasps were raiding the honey! -
The Best Time Of Year To Trap Squirrels?
Deker replied to Coursing mad 24's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
No idea, but most of my squirrel work tends to turn up in the slightly warmer months. The simple answer to the question is.... whenever they need trapping! -
I think that's what I use for mine, "possibly" even low on the latest version! With the side parallax rather than front it presents a lower profile!

Live Trapping Squirrels
Deker replied to Coursing mad 24's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I do a fair few in domestic environments and as mentioned, a thumbnail piece of bread covered in peanut butter is a virtual guarantee of success! -
I have the 3-12 old version and the 4-16 latest version. They are perfectly adequate for my needs without being exciting!

The standard T3 .223 mag holds 4 rounds of .223, you can of course get one more loaded, so you can go out with a total of 5 immediately at your disposal. If you can only get 3 x .223 rounds in your standard .223 T3 magazine something is amiss!

You will always get a debate when you suggest that. Clean barrels (as long as they are sound and true) will always shoot better than dirty barrels. The problem is, in my opinion, society today expects instant results, many think a quick scrub and mop do the job, they don't, that will often make things worse and raise fouling, and leads to this all too common, "never clean it, I did and it took me 50 shots to get it shooting again". If you clean, be prepared to devote time to it and do it properly, how many clean this well, with a scrub between each?.......... Top row R-L, bottom
-
Best I have done, I bottled out of the 5th shot when I saw these! Unfortunately its not like that everyday, but I would still expect to quite comfortably stay inside and inch, even on a bad day!

We seem to have completely forgotten the days pre V-Max and the current widespread use of other expanding ammo. The staple bunny round was a solid lead 40g .22lr. Without doubt it would pass clean through at times, and would also expand to some extent some times, and it is of course bigger/heavier than a .17HMR. Just the same, BOTH will kill instantly if delivered to the right place, a rabbit/crow will not wonder off anywhere if you put a HMR through it in the right place at 200 yards. Please read in conjunction with #12, primarily this bit........ HMR carries plenty of energy
-
I think I am sort of agreeing with you but putting it another way. HMR carries plenty of energy at 200 yards to stop a rabbit or crow instantly. It may not deliver that energy as efficiently as at some distances, and delivering it to the right place at 200 yards isn't that easy either. In simple terms I don't really see the HMR as a 200yard everyday tool for anything...but then again, a HMR to a .223 is more than a 1000ft lb increase, there are several choices in between those two!
-
There is also a problem that develops with age for some, me included, the eyes are not what they were and with Iron sights, I can get the sights or the target in focus, unfortunately not both at the same time, optics can fortunately deal with my eyesight issues.
-
Just to balance it up a bit, the usual andyf and cc are not fans of the HMR , well, many people are! It has its uses, I have a decent selection of guns/calibres and despite issues with HMR ammo I find mine very useful! I also hear this long range crows malarkey all the time, what is the issue, learn how to get closer, or if you just want to test yourself go down a range!

I'm not entirely sure what Alliant Techsystems specifically manufacture or sub out to third parties. I suspect it is possible some bullets/cases/primers/powders/etc., are farmed out and then assembled in house. But IF people are finding Hornady works best it would imply third party parts are then specifically assigned to one brand of HMR (ie bits from "x" third party manufacturer go exclusively to, for instance, Remington). As I suggested, I too found Hornady best in my HMR day one, and still favour the Hornady, probably because of the Blue price/availability, but trials, now that my bar

Have you got a chart of that, those figures don't add up to me! How can it have a peak trajectory .6" high at 35 yards, .2" high at 50 yards, spot on at 55 and still spot on at 150? I don't know any bullet from any calibre that flies in a laser straight line for 95 yards (55-150)?

Variable Or Fixed Magnification???
Deker replied to Andrew Russ's topic in Shooting Equipment & Accessories
This just shows how everyone has a different view and prefers different things...16x FIXED on a WMR, now I think that is a joke, no offence intended as that works for you, but even 10x Fixed, as you are looking for, would not be on my agenda. Variable every time for me on every scope and rifle I have, most start about 3x or 4x, a couple 6x, I don't even use 16x on the range out to 600 yards, usually about 8-10x, maybe 12x. That works for me, but we are all different, I have no problems putting a HMR in a bunnies head 150 yards away at 6x with a HMR, although in truth I don't often push -
Harris if you can stretch to them, always a resale value in them as well. I have the 9-13, and the 12-25, both Swivel, they both have their uses, the lower is not much use when the crops/grass is a bit long, and the taller is bigger/heavier of course, but I would not be without either. The 12-25 is useful and just about usable prone or sitting, some find the 13.5-27 better for sitting, but then again it tends to be too tall for prone! If you are talking field work then go for the Swivel version every time, if it is ONLY range work then fixed is fine and even consider the 6-9 versi
