Good deer dogs (pure)

Recommended Posts

i have an awful urge to do a pic of a magnificent stag in full rut lying in the midst of Exmoor with a 17" beddy/whippet standing astride it.............?

Not sure what to title it though............................ Perhaps master of the Moor..............?

Whippets are scoffed at by the uninitiated.  Sometimes size can be deceptive.

I know charty's post is a tad tongue in cheek, but I agree with both of you.

Seen, and owned, some extremely useful, versatile whippets over the years.  And whilst you wouldn't recommend one as a regular, single handed deer dog, they have a habit of surprising their owners, and you are dead right, they are very often scoffed at, and very underated.

Roe were regularly taken by Whippets. Fox as well. Whippets still believe they are greyhounds so will often take on prey species far larger than themselves. Very often Whippets have to be protected from their own gameness, because tackling larger species, factors in welfare issues for both dog and prey.

Interesting photo taken in 1970s? I am intrigued with your name, do you keep them?

Very late 60's, '69 I think.

Blue Prince, ( Blue Boy x Zarwood), 21" and 35 lb.

He certainly wasn't a deer dog, but took a few, as well as hares. It's just a little wind up for my protege mC ?

As for my user name, no, I've never owned one. I was walking in San Antonio, Texas and saw a man walking what I thought was a rather nice lurcher so struck up a conversation. He was slightly offended that I thought his dog was a lurcher and informed me it was a Chartpolski, a Polish Greyhound.

I was intrigued and looked them up, hence my user name ?

Cheers.

I used them in Poland and the Ukraine in the 1990s and again a couple of years ago, fantastic hare dogs the big lands.

Very adult reply, Magoo.  I'm pleasantly surprised.

Now, go and have a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit.  ??
