  1. They probably tnought the same about the smell. "I'm not eating that. It's just sh@t itself!"
  2. Just use your carp or pike tackle. 12 -15lb mono or double that if braid, and a 200 cm shock leader to Kevlar hook link. Fill a squid with cat food mixed with breadcrumb groundbait and chuck it out in the deepest part of the lake or in some shady spot.
  3. Depends where and how you will be fishing.
  4. Not when you are sat on a 14 foot kayak half a mile offshore you don't!
  5. Looks like a lovely dog. I had three that I took beating and walk up shooting. They were all different; one worked like a spaniel, another froze and pointed game and the third was like a bulldozer. No cover phased him. When I took them on new shoots I got some funny looks at first. But I was always asked back. A good collie will do anything.
  6. I was fishing off my kayak off Flamborough in 2008 when the local tourist boat came close and one of the crew shouted that they had seen a pod of Orca at the north side. I Thought they were taking the pi$$ but it was in the local paper the next day. A Geordie l used to work with who had worked on a fishing boat said that they were regular visitors to that area. Apparently they feed on football supporters who have been chased into the sea by pit men.
  7. It is a sign of how desperate politicians can be when they have only a year before they face being unemployed. The French fishermen are giving Macron a hard time because the UK have insisted that Feench skippers provide information of their historic catches taken in British waters and they can't provide the information because they turned their location transponders off half the time. Without access to Uk waters they need Jersey's watrrs and that would cripple their local fisheries. France canot bully the Uk so they turn on Jersey to try and pacify their fishermen. Simple answer is to bo

    Cuckoo

When I was about 3 or 4 in the late 1950's we lived in a colliery estate that bordered woodland and there were always cuckoos calling in spring. Then they just seemed to disappear. By the 2000's I rarely heard them despite spending a lot of time out in the countryside shooting and fishing. Hopefully the reduction in pesticides might reverse their decline.

    Cuckoo

Yes, the hoopoes were early this year and there seems to be more of them. There are also two colonies of bee eaters that I know of. Virtually everything that we used to see in Cyprus except greater cuckoos and rollers can be found here. It is really strange as to look at the countryside it doesn't differ much from the UK and we are only 500 miles south of the channel, but the bird species is totally different. Loads of buzzards and black kites about. There are ravens living nearby along with the usual jays, crows and magpies and yet the songbirds thrive. Don't see many wild pheasant and p

    Cuckoo

Back home in Sth Yorkshire cuckoos were rarely heard, even around the wet lands and woods in nearby Ryhill West Yorks. But out here in France you can hear them all day, every day. Same with nightingales. Never heard one in the UK and we used to spend a night in the mountains in Cyprus while on holiday just to hear them. While walking the dog this morning they were everywhere. Golden orioles have recently arrived too. That was another species we used to look for in Cyprus. A couple of years ago I was fishing near to a place called Marans in early June. While I was there I must have seen a

  13. The ESL project was exposed by a journalist who passed on his findings to a German newspaper Der Spiegel. Thousands of emails and other documentation has been analysed and the background and aims of the project laid clear. It is a long read. But if you are genuinely interested in football and the greed of top club's owners it is worth the time: https://www.spiegel.de/international/world/football-documents-show-secret-plans-for-elite-league-of-top-clubs-a-1236447.html TLDR: The idea of the ESL project is to direct more TV and media money to the top clubs, in particular Real Madri
  14. They are called pis en lit, i.e. piss the bed, in France so there must be something in it. The Romanians out here pick the tiny shoots and add them to salads. But then again, they are pi$$ poor. I used to harvest sorrel and wild garlic leaves and bulbs when out on the shoot.
  15. But whatever you do don't shout: "Ali akbar!" or you'll get a double tap from a Heckle & Koch before you know it.
  16. Personally I cannot taste any difference between home cooked chick peas and tinned ones. None whatsover. My chickpea recipe for the Kelly Kettle goes like this; After boiling the kettle fry small cubes of chorizo and pork belly over a moderate heat until they are just about to brown on the outside. Add some chopped onion, red pepper and mushrooms. Cook until the onion is soft then add chickpeas and a teaspoon of smoked paprika powder and pepper. Stir it all together and let it fully warm up. Takes about ten minutes.
  17. Baking powder isn't the same as bicarbonate of soda. It is more conveniant to use tinned chick peas. They are cheap enough too. Just remember to rinse them well.
  18. Sprinkle some cumin seeds over your chipatis before you cook them. If you haven't got a blender you can still make the same recipe, but you have to finely chop everything which is a pain.
  19. Have you got a blender? If you have try this method; Put the onions, garlic, red pepper and any chilli peppers in the blender along with a heaped tea spoon of thick tomato puree and your spices. Add a glug of oil then whizz it all through. If it doesn't roll into the blender and sticks to the sides add a drop more oil a bit at a time until you blend a smooth paste. Then chop another onion and some red pepper and put that to one side. Put a couple of table spoons of oil in a frying pan and heat it on full whack for at least 30 seconds. Then scrape the paste in and cook on full he
  20. There was a bee swarm while I was out fishing today. First time I have seen one and it was nothing like what I had expected. I thought they would be closely packed together, but they were scattered about over the whole of the sky that I could see. We've had a few queen wasps in our bottle traps.
  21. It all depends on the competition. If you live in an area with little competition then you will get ahead much quicker than if it is cut-throat. I agree with what Mole Trapper has said. You have to be prepared for a slow start over two or possibly three years before you can hope to get established. Once you are established you can be more choosy and decline any work that is too much hassle or too far to travel. Over the years you can shape the business, but you are looking at a minimum of five years to get to that point even if you have little competition.
