  1. If it is like the one on that auction listing then you have a very nice reel indeed. That would be made around 1860-90, towards the latter end, and I'd guess at a London maker. It looks similar to a T Aldred reel in parts, but the handle is more dainty. The quality of the work is top notch, but I would hav expected a maker's inscription somewhere as that was very common for the more expensive reels. Also, there seems to be a little mishaping of the frame in one par , but nothing serious.
  2. Sorry Sid, but that is all I get - no photo
  3. I can't see the pics but in the 19th century brass reels or winches as they were called were in vogue and many were made in Birmingham or London. There were some large manufacturers like Rueben Heaton and loads of small one man bands or family businesses knocking what were virtually the same designs with a few of their own tweaks or cosmetic differences. Some of these makers would brand the reel with the name of the retailer so you'd get top London retailers like Ogden Smith and J Bernard & Sons branded reels that had been made by the same maker. Sadly, not many are worth much. It all
  4. I can't see the photo, but if you can post it again I will look through my books to see what it looks like. Also, are there any makers marks on it or inside?
  5. Should have told them you'd had a grass carp.
  6. They are American Black Bass or Largemouth Bass. They are stocked in many lakes and rivers over here in France and also they are in the inland dams in Cyprus. I caught those two to stock in a customer's koi lake to deal with the frogs, tadpoles and excessive fry numbers. They fight like trout, but never give up.
  7. Thing is that Norway need to be able to sell to the EU whereas the EU needed to sell to the UK. That is why they get a sh1t deal.
  8. Farage reckons the EU won't last ten years and I wouldn't be surprised if he was right - again.
  9. I agree. It is therapeutic casting with a small multiplier. I have two more modern ones that I use for really light fishing. But an old cane rod and vintage salmon casting reel like a Hardy Silex is such a delight to cast with using a large spoon or plug.
  10. The latest news on banning the Dutch electro-fishers and Norwegian boats from UK waters is going to cause the EU some problems. The pulse trawling has been controversial and it was expected that they would be banned from European waters. Boris got in first, seized the moral high ground and peed up the lamp post letting the whole of the EU know that Britain controls Britain's waters. Gold star to Mr. Johnson! And guess where those super trawlers will be heading? Ireland here they come. Then banning the Norwegians until there is an agreement will cause them to hammer at the EU's doors
  11. Jean-Claude Drunkers was furious with Camamoron for allowing the Referendum. He publicly stated that he shouldn't have allowed them (us) to vote. Democracy is not what the EU is all about. The way the EU works is to trap small countries by offering them money in the form of subsidies and loans. But to get that money the small country has to sign up to EU rules which include trade barriers with non-EU countries. So whereas Bulgaria and other poor countries would usually buy cheap Russian tractors once they were in the EU they couldn't. They had to buy the more expensive French and German tracto
  12. I've got an old 624 that I intended to use for catfish but I can't get used to the right hand wind. A few of my old Mitchells........ A Mitchell half-bail from the early1950's. Hardy held the Patent for full bails until around 1952 so all fixed spools before that were half-bails like the Ambidex. The other Mitchell is from 1955/6 and has the level wind. I got the half-bail for £7 from an auction and the other Mitchell reel was €8 from the local charity shop. I've had an Adcoccks Stanton for years. Lovely reel, but a pain if you aren't used to centrepins a
  13. I think that Queeny is well chuffed with Brexit, but she can't be seen to be too political. If he opened a dodgy charity where all the funds go to his kids like Botham he could well get a gong. As it is Boris might name him amongst his list in due course.
  14. What the f**k has that got to do with taking back control? Read the posts after yours. There is more to Brexit than trying to undo the wrongs of the last twenty years. It is about tomorrow, not yesterday!
  15. I've got two Mitchell Match reels, both blue and in very good nick. They get an outing every now and then. Also got a Mitchell Half-Bail, the type Richard Walker used to catch the record carp, and a 1955/6 model with full bail. Also a 300 and ABU 506 bought with my paper round and Saturday job money. A few more centrepins too.... A 1940's /50' Arerial Popular This one is unique. It was made in 1912 probably as a prototype by a reel maker who left Hardys and struck up shop on his own. A Trudex A Speedia
  16. As was posted earlier; this isn't the end of it. I was going to say that the EU will start to test the UK by putting obstructions in their way. To try and make things uncomfortable for the UK, but it appears that Boris has got in first and banned the Dutch pulse fishing vessels. This is going to be the start of niggling disputes. Basically the EU will do anything to get the UK back on the payroll. Getting a no tariffs deal was a big thing for EU industries. With a WTO deal they would be put at a big disadvantage as the EU's protectionism has kept non-EU goods at higher prices for years g
  17. Everything except available. Give me availability over looks every time ?
  18. For me the stainless ones are better. They are built stronger.
  19. No, I wouldn't recommend pointers. Stick with the sausage dogs to keep the pedigree intact. There is too much cross breeding these days.
  20. You'd better be able to prove the supporting Everton bit if his lawyers come for you.
  21. Thing is, if he'd just slipped the Chief Constable a couple of grand at a Lodge meeting he'd have been left alone.
  22. That's the trouble with modern life; no respect for long standing traditions.
  23. Macron has totally changed his stance recently. Initially he was all for stopping Brexit so that he could get on with his plans for world domination and robbing the poor people of France of their pensions. Now, with the French general elections looming ever closer and facing a run off between him, le Pen and the new popular right-wing candidate he is wanting to stall any Brexit negotiations until after the French elections. This gives him time to pretend that he is supporting the fishermen, farmers and the car workers even though blocking any deal that does not allow his fishermen continued a
