    I now use an electronic programmable one with a battery back up so when there is a power cut the timer doesn't lose time. Otherwise the bathroom ventilator fan would be coming on when it wasn't bath time.

    The black ring around the timer are little individual segments. If you press one of them in towards the centre that will cause the power to come on for 15 minutes.

    You really need to cut out the non essential things when you are camping. Just take the absolute bare essentials. For our latest trip I have got it down to 3 rods, 2 reels, 8 bottles of wine, 24 cans of beer.........

    There are elections in France next year and our old friend Michel Barnier has put himself forward as a right wing candidate opposing Macron. Nothing surprising there, except that he is running on an anti-immigration policy whereby France would not take any immigrants for 5 years. Apart from the breathtaking hypocrisy after repeatedly claiming that Brexit wss fueled by anti-immigration rhetoric, he would put France in direct breaches of his former paymaster's policies.     There are a lot of carassin carp in the rivers out here in SW France. They are basically brown goldfish, but confusingly the have the same Latin name as crucians.

    Of course they will be breeding pups to supply the demand from pretentious tw@ts who want brag on fb that they have 'rescued' a pup from Romania, Spain, wherever. As though they've gone over there themselves and dragged the animal off the streets. This whole rescue thing is bollox. Most of the dogs in UK sanctuaries aren't 'rescues'. They are from owners who got fed up with them or couldn't look after them so handed the dog in. I have no problem getting dogs from sanctuaries, but this whole importation of foreign dogs is just a production line for profit.

    I gave a 16 year old a hiding on the street in full view of all the residents. He told me his Dad would kill me so I put him in the Panda, took him home and told his Dad what I'd done and why. He got another hiding off his Dad. 'Life on Mars' wasn't entirely fiction. ?

    Talking of old routines; we saw Ken Dodd at Sheffield around 2009. A few months later there was a radio show on featuring a Ken Dodd show from the 1970's. Other than the income tax gags it was the same show! And people used to go and see him every year.

    Most of the bobbies in the UK won't participate either. There will only be a few brown nosers participating in these crackpot schemes. And then only for the cameras and press. There will be beat bobbies getting to work half an hour earlier just to nab the keys for the cars that aren't rainbow coloured.

    The thing is that only those willing to put their neck on the line or who can't get out of it actually respond quickly. I followed one car to a status zero only to see it turn off down a quiet country lane. It was our Sergeant. Others arrive late by design. The TV programs don't show yoh that side of things.

    Whilst I agree that the number of dwarf females isn't exactly good for public order situations I've worked with male bobbies of 6' 5" and more who were total cowards. It isn' t the size of the dog in the fight. It's more about the size of fight in the dog. The problem with recruiting so many young women is that it increases the amount of shift days lost due to them working light duties when pregnant, maternity leave and then demanding family friendly shifts off the streets when (if) they come back. That means that male officers are being unfairly descriminated against in having to do more

    I didn't take schit from anyone including the gaffers. After I left the job my wife and I walked up to a local pub that was on my old beat. It was like walking into my past. There were at least 6 that I'd locked up and most of them hadn't come willingly. I sent the wife off to find a table and approached the group as they were congregated around the bar. They all recognised me and we had a real old catch up about the old times. One of them insisted on meeting my wife and nearly crushed her hand whilst shaking it.     That is one of the problems. The Police (as in the gaffers) think that holding public forums puts them in touch with the public. Where I worked the same 5 old blokes attened every meeting and were fixated on dog shit and litter issues. Neither of which was a police matter. That village had an electorate of 2,500. Where were the other 2,495? The didn't give a toss about police forums. What they wanted was to feel safe and find their car, TV and wallet where they left them when they went to bed.     They won't be under the same pressures that UK bobbies are. Most of the police's problems have been caused by liberalist government policies. The rest are their own doing. Mainly trying to follow a more PC route than everybody else.

    When they asked the local station clerks to keep a record of how many people came to their stations it was a pitiful number. When somebody did come in to report a crime they were handed a telephone and connected to the central crime recording bureau because all the local beat officers were out of the area rushing to yet another facebook threat to kill or hate crime. Local stations aren't the solution. The solution is to tear up the current rules on what is and isn't a crime and employ common sense. There are other issues too like the police being used for all sorts of non essential activitie

    Shutting down local stations is a good thing. They are rarely used in the way that the public think they are and cost the taxpayers a fortune to keep open. The rest is sheer bollox and will be reflected in all public services.

    I agree with your sentiments. But, in the real world we have to accept that the prisons are already full so increasing the rank of dog theft isn't likely to result in longer sentences. It is a waste of a petition, but then again, since the introduction of e-petitions, most of them are.
