You could try industrial estates / office complexes, Often large areas of grass and empty of people out of hours. Check with the managers.

Dan - you've waited for ages and then two !! Magic!

And remember, the distance re. pellet drop represented by the mil dot changes with the magnification.

Moderator Messing Up My Zero????
Cedric replied to Andrew Russ's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
If there is a small, polished strip on the inside of the exit hole it's definitely out of alignment. Moderators do change POI. At the moment I'm trying to find out why my Hornet keeps loosing zero and tried three diferent mods today, each had a different POI. -
Thanks, I've seen those reamers on the net. Do they only debur the inside of the hole or can they slightly enlarge it? I've noticed with Remington and PPU brass the hole is considerably larger and my de-capping die worls fine. I have to de-cap the Hornady with a pin punch - very tedious! I was considering drilling the holes out to 2mm.

Have you tried the new mounts yet ?

I don't think there is a security issue with firearms being out of their cabinet if they are in your complete supervision and control i.e. you are present. By all means lock them away at night or if you go out, making it difficult for casual thieves. Criminals targeting your guns will find a way to get their hands on them, it would be fairly straightforward to force you to disclose where your keys are, easier than crowbarring a safe and lugging it away.

I called in at my RFD today and all he could see wrong was that the barrel was not sitting centrally in the forend although a piece of paper would still slide along it. He slackened the stock screw amd straightened the barrel and retightened, the space (floating) appeared even. I noticed that the wood of the forend is failry flexible and can be pushed up to meet the barrel, that should not be a problem as long as I don't press down on the barrel whist shooting. Then I had a mad idea ! I rest the forend on a V shaped bag to shoot and i realised that in order to gain a little more elevat

I was under the impression that the police do not have legal authority to demand access to your proprety to check gun security - ecxept in the course of investigating a current crime.

A rotary toothbrush dipped in solvent does a good job of cleaning the recesses of the breech face.

It's on a .22 Hornet which goes off with a fair old bang! The scope is a second hand Nikko Sterling Target Master which seems to work pretty well apart from this problem. I rezeroed last night and left it as in pic. 1/. This morning it shot as in pic. 2/. Took the scope off meaning to fit another one only to discover the tubes were different sizes and I had no spare 16mm mounts, so I remounted the old one. Mounts felt rock solid but no adhesive tape under them. Rezeroed again and got 3 in the centre, turned the mag. down from 18 to 12 and fired one more - low and left. I had to give up

The mounts came with the rifle, I must admit I was a bit dubious at first but they are well made and seemed solid. I think I'll invest in a new set for my peace of mind. Coypu - the scope is left in place and feels totally solid but I was never very happy about the single screw.
-
I hope that fixes it for you, however, I would have thought a raised mount would give elevation problems not lateral cross-over unless it was pushing the mount to one side. Time will tell.

Well ! I took the rifle out today and, considering my group posted above, it was 2" right and 1 1/2" low today! I gave the rifle and scope a good shaking and tapping and the POI didn't change, So, before I change the scope I re-zeroed and will try it again tomorrow. I have also marked the position of my moderator to ensure it goes back on in the same place. I can try a different scope ( of which I have a decent one spare) and if no better will consider the mounts. I did slightly tighten one screw yesterday, would that be enough to put if out? The mounts appears firm.

The Hornet doesn't ricochet - it just blasts the rocks in half !!
-
Just make sure there are no rocks lying about - otherwise those 22's will sing !
-
It was a second hand scope, only bought to see what the extra maginication was like, no great loss if it's shagged. I'll take it out and give it a good shake in between rounds and see if that effects it. When travelling it's in a padded cover in a purpose built drawer in my car so should not have been knocked to any great extent.

Rikweller - backstop is a steep banking at the bottom of a hill - in a field. I zero my NV .22lr subs, in the yard where my workshop is - 50 yards - and use some 3" pine boards nailed to a sheet of thick plywood, works fine. Deker - I have a few "I made earlier". I make all sorts of stuff, some work, some don't. Last week I made a spinner target for the air rifle but rather "over engineered" it and a pellet hardly moves it - I'll use it for the rimfire. I got one of those scopes from Aldi. It's OK but I can only make out bullet holes in white paper clearly up to about yards but it's fi

Alsone - residential caravans are just like a bungalow inside and are not mobile, not all the same as hoiday or touring vans - but they have no brick walls. I suppose if your were touring it would be suitable for storing guns - as long as a thief didn't tow the whole lot away !

Don't forget to check the size of the rail. My CZ 527 has a 16mm rail!

Sheet of paper or card, cover it with strips of Selotape and spray paint. The bullet snaps the paint off the Selotape and shows the contrasting colour underneath. You could make pretty big ones if you wanted longer ranges.

Position Of Gun Torch Scope Clamp?
Cedric replied to patterdale's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I find as far foreward as possible cuts down on glare. Mine is in front of the front mount. -
Tell her the blood is just a nose bleed !

I made some Shoot & See targets and they worked fine, however, I found it was difficult to pick out my reticule cross hair and mil dots against the black background so I tried making some light ones and this is the result . Pretty good.
