  1. BASC advice is refuse to pay. Apparently they're not supposed to charge for Firearm reports: https://basc.org.uk/blog/press-releases/latest-news/basc-says-dont-pay-medical-fee/
  2. The gun for the one at the far end looks as if it could be a bit of a handful. Also, might raise a few questions as you towed it behind your car. Just going rabbiting officer.... Nice collection though. Just need to get him building a display now.
  3. Simple advice, join BASC before applying. That way, if it does go tits up, he has access to advice, representation and if necessary the ability to go to appeal with his free representation. Could be the best £ he'll spend.
  4. I take it the through and through is the .223? It should be. A friends of mine put his through 1/4 plate steel and 3 foundry bricks from 200 yards. Just wondering, how do you have the pistol calibres - lever action rifles?
  5. Not sure anyone was slating it. Some people were just saying there are alternatives that are better in some regards, such as retained energy, bullet drop, velocity. Horses and courses and all that.
  6. Anyone else having some trouble on some threads with the browser back button (Firefox)? I know some site block the use of back deliberately but I hope that isn't going to be a policy here as it's a very unfriendly feature.
  7. I didn't mean without applying for a 1:1 variation 1st! As for capability, I believe you're mistaken on foxes. The .17 Hornet has the same trajectory as .223 which is a big improvement over the heavier .22 H. It also retains energy better than the .22H at range and has 60 ft lbs more energy and 600fps more velocity at 300yds than the .22H - the Shooting Show had several nights out on fox and were dropping them instantly dead at ranges up to 300yds, well beyond the range you'd typically use for .22 Hornet, although personally I'd say leave those ranges to experts with such a small calibre:
  8. Personally, I'd try to clean it as Charlie says. If not, forget .22 K Hornet it only adds a couple of 100 fps and then you've got to reload and Fireform brass. Simply trade it in for a .17 Hornet. I'll guarantee you'll not regret it. More capable round, much faster with higher pressures so non of the rusting issues should surface as it's a scorcher, and it out ranges .22 Hornet on both small game and fox, plus it's much flatter shooting. The big trouble with .22 Hornet is a lot of the ammo is limited in performance so it can be used in older lower proofed guns. As .17 Hornet is a recent develo
  9. I don't disagree and he is experienced. He holds .22LR, .223, .30-06 and numerous shotguns. Never known him do anything like that before. He said he thought I was in the next field down but the answer is simple, if you don't know for sure it is safe, then don't shoot. I guess the rabbit proved too much temptation but it also nearly proved why you don't shoot where you can't see. Yes, every calibre has the ability to ricochet. However, .22LR is more prone because it doesn't have the energy to fragment. I don't understand why people make excuses for it. If this was HMR being prone to cr
  10. Police like you to start off with a 17hmr , because they don't ricochet like a 22 . Something worth remembering especially in this dry weather with rock hard ground. A mate got hold of some 22lr tracers, we shot some off at night. It was scary, I mean they go all over the place . If any of you 22 boys get hold of any try it , it will make you think a bit about what is behind and off to the side of your target . I hate .22LR for that very reason. My friend once took a shot he shouldn't have - I was down range and out of sight albeit he knew I'd gone ahead and so shouldn't have been shooti
  11. I agree. If you're going to shoot hundreds of bunnies go for LR but as others have mentioned some forces won't allow it for fox because it's marginal on fox sized targets especially as the range pulls out.. It will kill instantly at sensible short range with a well placed shot. If you're going to shoot hundreds of bunnies, why not stick to the air rifle and get a centrefire rifle for fox conditioned AOLQ, which means you can still shoot bunnies with it if you want to (and can afford to|). Otherwise choices pretty much are: air rifle + CF, .22LR + CF or .22LR alone and compromises on fox ra
  12. I doubt it would penetrate boar. It all looks very impressive against plastic water jugs and paper targets, but you have to remember all you're firing is the plastic wad and a small part of the plastic case together, making maybe a few grams of soft plastic. Somehow against a solid or tough surface, I think it would more than likely bounce off or just cause surface damage.
  13. This is what the antis don't see. That left alone, the countryside isn't in balance and many of our diminishing songbirds would be very much more diminished. One of the biggest problems around where I live is magpies because no one is controlling them. Put food out for certain birds, and it's not unusual to have 10 magpies in the garden within minutes. If each one is paired with a female (or is female) and each one lays at least 1 egg in a local songbird nest, then that's at least 10 songbird nests locally that are going to have no youngsters. In a small area, that's a lot of birds effecti
  14. I have 2 friends with no previous shooting experience who got 2x .22LR + a .243 + .22-250 all open on 1st grant (Not West Yorks). There situation for the CF's was slightly different in that they wanted them for stalking in Scotland so they ahd to be open.
  15. Taurus Judge 3 inch shot pistol? Not sure how it complies with UK legislation with regards to the definition of a shotgun and barrel length, although I have heard it mentioned on stalking forums before. The judge will fire both .410 shotshells and slugs, and .45 Colt / ACP. No reason in theory why a RFD couldn't reduce the mag to 2 shots provided the Judge was UK legal. You then have the option of .410 shotshell or .410 slug, with a .410 ammo restriction on the licence, or .410 shotshell if slugs are not conditioned. Somehow I doubt BB's from a 2.5" or 3" .410 from point blank will fa
  16. Bullsh*t. Refer her to the Home Office Good Reason List contained in the Firearms Guidance and also s.13.25: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/518193/Guidance_on_Firearms_Licensing_Law_April_2016_v20.pdf The Good Reason Table on page 123 also clearly lists .243 and 6.5mm as Good Reason for Fox. Note this is only a guide and not Law. However, they should be following Home Office recommendations. If you continue to have trouble, contact the BASC as it's best to have someone with more clout to negotiate on your behalf. There are argumen
  17. The 17 hornet is a decent enough gun, but it's never going to be a replacement for the 22lr as a plinker/rabbit gun especially when the ammo is over 10 times more expensive. And 250-300 yards on fox? I know you're a fan, but that's ridiculous. Badly worded from my mobile, should have been a comma after fox. I meant it's good for everything from birds and bunnies to fox, and it's good for out to 250-300yds, not that I would recommend fox at 300yds. The Shooting Show did use it out to a stated 300 yds on fox with no runners. There is a video of their night out on Youtube. Many
  18. I presume it's for target as it's pretty hard to justify in the UK for anything else. British Army Snipers use Accuracy International. This is a pretty good advert for the Surgeon 1581 though as well: Unsure about specific target specialised rifles as not circles I've ever passed in.
  19. Unless you're going to be shooting large numbers of rabbits or need near silence next to housing, consider a .17 Hornet. 1 gun and it does everything from birds and bunnies, to fox out to around 250-300yds for the cost of a variation. A few have one on here and by all accounts it's a cracking little gun.
  20. Or you could just get a variation for a .17 Hornet....kills pretty much anything at short to medium range. 1 gun instead of 2.
  21. Is it not classed as handling explosives? if it is then is more security standards required? You'll not be having any explosions. This is what happens to propellant powders if you light them: They don't explode, they burn and produce gas at a controlled rate dictated by the type of propellant used. The only time you could get an explosion would be if you contained a larger quantity in a container that contained the pressure, and then what you'd really get is a sudden escape of pressure from the container rather than a true explosion. Think gunpowder plot. However, I so
  22. Hornet and HMR are a world apart. As for guns, never go far wrong with a CZ. http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/reviews/rifle/cz-527-17-hornet
  23. There was a study in the magazine not long ago showing the wait times for various forces. In some areas it's approaching 6 months: eg In West Mercia it's 169 days average (5 1/2 months) for an FAC renewal according to the study! https://basc.org.uk/blog/press-releases/featured-news/new-basc-study-shows-firearms-licensing-postcode-lottery/
  24. If you want to learn long range, look for videos by Tibosaurus Rex. He's an ex US Sniper (I think special forces) and really knows his stuff. He has a 94 part sniper training course on Youtube. You can shoot accurately at any range if you know the stuff (I admit I don't), but watch some of his vids and he's making shots at more 1200 yards and hitting the target 1 shot!! To make really long shots, he takes into account Coriolis and even the temp of the ammo (measured with an IR gun). It's the meticulous details that Elliot is taking into account using the app and wind measurements, plus sig
  25. Personally I wouldn't go above 40 yards or so. I'm sure it would still kill beyond that, but the pattern is starting to open up. Yeah I'd have said 30-40 max. It's not what you can kill at but what range you can consistently cleanly kill at. As Walshie says, beyond 30 the pattern opens up so it's less hits plus each hit has less energy which makes it increasingly harder to guarantee a sure fire humane kill. If you want to shoot fox at ranges beyond those mentioned, a rifle is a better bet.
