Anyone Else's Lurcher a Thieving Little Bugger
Bosun11 replied to Cookie423's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Love the tales of thieving Lurchers... real old school. Used to be one round the corner from me when I was a kid called Jessie James, 'coz the b*****d would rob anthing'!! I had a bitza lurcher once that was one hell of a thief, really aloof and coy about it too, sly like! It could open the fridge & both types of freezer. Would sneak back for anything too, once running right past us and back to the car after missing a hare, a field away & breaking the half open window, to scoff our buttys! Came downstairs to find it had been in the freezer and nabbed a chicken and was doing its best -
Believe me mate.....the fact you work your dogs and have a good understanding of dogs in general..................makes you more qualified than 90 % of American Pit Bull Terrier owners in todays times !.....sad as it is to admit. I was just going to type a similar thing ........... Petbulls aside. If B11 applied himself to "those" dogs, and "that" thing he'd be hard to beat, I won't go into detail but some of the so called bulldog men I've met just about manage to look after themselves, it is credit to the durability of the breed and not to them if they've ever had a dog that's

Feck me OT...! 'Rule with an iron fist' etc... Personaly, i've never found the need for such treatment, quite the opposit in fact! Train and train well, then mind how you go.. That should be the cry here! I've seen far worse damage done form big rangy greyhoundy types, sporting serious ivory, in the first skirmishes of battle than big bull crosses. As bird said, no mythical hell beasts, just Lurchers, so don't paint 'em like one..

Firstly, i'd agree with Gnash wholehartedly on the virtues of this magnificent breed... Would I own one... Absolutley not..! I'm a lurcher owner and although my dogs carry this blood, I simply have no use for a dog of such pedigree. They are for others, far more qualified than me! What has happend to this breed in this country is a travesty and all because of 'everybody wants one'..! We can all admire but admire from a distance, I really beleive there are few who really should own a genuine one.

Sorry to hear that tale about your dog Spud, even more sorry for the old boy and his Russell but I think Wilf's nailed it with his post. Plenty of Lurchers can be hell on other dogs and there is sommat about none hunting dogs that can really rub 'em up the wrong way, (even if they work alongside many other breeds throughout their working life but then thats the difference .. work!) A good strong, hard grafted bull bred dog can do some damage, especially if your not in there fast. You did what you did, for your reasons and.. it's probably for the best. Best of luck with your next charge

Good stuff Tomo, nowt better than a bit of success on your doorstep.

Those Yukon's are a crackin bit of kit X38, i've been out with a lad that used one. Though i'm with Giro in that i'd be fecking choked if it had to go. Remember the first time out with nightvision, years back, i'm calling and my mates doin the lookin with his new kit. 'Theres a fecking chicken coming in', he blurted out and pressed the lens tighter to his eye. 'A fecking chicken..!!' I flicked the lamp on to see a fox stood where the chicken had been! The daft sod, with his untrained eye and poor grade night vision, had mistaken the white front of the fox for a chicken motoring towards us..

As said mate, thats what is expected of lamping dogs. They should all return as soon as the lamp goes off, sharpish too, so as to be ready for the next run.

It's this simple... Whippets were primarily bred for the track... Lurchers, the field... Make your decision, though CP's got it right...!
-
Moll, it's this simple, you are THE best action shot poster on here... Couple that with the 'always' great write up and your posts shouldn't be missed by anyone!

i gave to a bloke who bred belgian hares never did find out if he bred off it. Doubt it mate Belgian Hares are rabbits.

Great pics Paulus, me mam hand reared one when we were kids in the late 70's. It got to about the size of yours but then started to become a handful, biting and scratching like feck. Though the job was done and we let it go.

I enjoyed that. A crackin bit, 7.15 mins in, the bloke stood shealding his eyes lookin toward the dog and the hare moving across the horizon and that sky behind.... It don't look any better than that...

Old Nuttall, new Nuttall.... This chestnut has been raging for years.... First off, speak to the man, he'll tell you there is no such thing...! I can remember going to an open night at the old Wigan Club looking to buy a terrier, I was aged 14, i'm 45 this year, Nuttall was one of the guest speakers and, as I have heard him many times since, spoke all about the breeding of his terriers. After the talk it was time for questions and the two that kept raging on, one of which is that what we are talking about now, 'the differences between old and new'! (This was very pre Miner and the other qu

Cammo man, now there's a blast from the past... Wilf, Zen and T's are two clubs i've had the 'pleasure' of frequenting many moons ago, whilst staying down your end.

For Sale Bull x poach golly bred single handed bitch
Bosun11 replied to a topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
Im gob smacked that some one can put up a dog thats left a trail of destruction, and is a liability,in the owners words.and lads try and justify it.As for the sheep thing well yes surely if your taking a dog into the countryside it should be stock brocken! if the dog has had a couple then it must be going into sheep country.Sheep are a car drive away So its to hard to take a pup out and let it know they are not on the menu. Then maybe take the dog out a couple of times each summer,as a reminder. There are lads out there working hard to try and get the hunting ban lifted(,although we all know it -
A great man who made great men! 90, a good innings by anyones standards.

Simply gobsmacked that the bitch is still there, DFK wrote with honesty and whoever took that bitch on would get just that, an honest bitch. It baffels me that people expect 'every' lurcher to be 100% stock steady. Sure, that would be the ideal but for folk who don't live in sheep country and need a car trip to see some, well they are gonna struggle have a 100% stock steady dog, especially when their dogs have a very high prey drive. Those dogs simply cannot see sheep enough on a regular basis throughout their lives. We have seen enough posts on here when people who 'do' live in sheep co -
Yer, I suppose so mate. It's about a local lad, who is probably one of this citys finest dog men. When I was a kid he kept some of the finest lurchers and terriers around, in and out of the city, no one was keener either, a Scouse legend is Ste! I remember in the early 's he said he was gonna put his best terrier bitch to a good spaniel dog and work the pups as bushing dogs. To be honest I thought he had lost the fecking plot, I just couldn't see it, as he worked some of the best working terriers around but he bred 'em and those dogs abilitys were up for all to see, no one he hunted with had

I've just read through three pages of the harm giving grapes as treats to you dog could cause, BUT... why the feck would you wanna do that anyway!! I can think of a million treats my dogs could have and grapes would be amongst the last of 'em!! Don't get me wrong, if i was happily eating a punnet and my dog was giving me the 'wanna share' eyes, then maybe i'd flick 'one' over for a laugh and i'd bet they'd eat it with a half arsed attitude of 'what the feck is that' and i'd piss myself laughing... But thats about all... Feck me, wise up and give a logical treat, one that gives a dogs

From the different types i've seen, the Beagle Spaniel crosses put enough pressure on, especially in cover. The best of also had a drop of terrier in the mix too, they'd face anything and above all worked well alongside Lurchers, if brought on right, stayed close enough for me and my dogs to be right in the mix. Seen too many 'all hound' crosses work too far away, then pick up a line and go and be difficult to keep close too and that IMO is essential in 'smash and grab' hunting!
