  1. I thought the office was good and also extras . Then he started spouting off about animal rights , and I lost interest in his work and his opinions. But he hosted the “Golden Globes” and shoved it right up the Hollywood elites arse . Tom Hanks face is a picture. I’ve got to hand it to the guy , I don’t agree with his views on animals but I’ve found a new respect for him . I don’t know how to put up the best bits but I watched It on YouTube , hilarious.
  2. Congratulations, welcome to the club ?
  3. I only use my sticks when I can’t use my vehicle . In fact most of my shooting is done off a bi pod on the front or roof of my mule . However there are times when I have to go on foot . Particularly now it’s very wet . This is when the sticks come in . They are very quick to deploy with a bit of practice. The only drawback is if you are tracking a moving fox then you have to reposition it a bit which is annoying. I know there are systems out there that cope better with a moving mount , but are they worth the extra expense , personally I doubt it .

  5. I would not shoot woodcock until the first woodcock arrive and in my neck of the woods is the first moon in November and I usually start seeing them around bonfire night . So definitely agree not to shoot our native birds . Interesting point about the mallard population. I often think that the ban on woodcock on shoots is a bit of Virtue signalling and also that they can’t charge for woodcock and if you shoot one you might miss the opportunity to shoot a pheasant.
  6. Well Christmas morning came and I surveyed my modest pile of presents. After unwrapping the obligatory socks and deodorants I came to a parcel that upon feeling it guessed that it was a book from one of my girls . As I tore the paper away I made a decision to hide the disappointment on my face as I already had a copy , and thanked my daughter for her thoughtfulness. So as you can see I have a copy of this tome which I will raffle . Put your names down and on Sunday evening I will announce the winner. ATB
  7. Couldn’t agree more . Some of the shooting organisations are pushing for restraint based on “RSPB” science . Actually what I’m seeing and what I hear is that numbers are the same as ever . We probably saw a couple of hundred woodcock on that day , the woods were “lifting” with them . If we don’t keep hunting them and enjoying these birds we will lose them off the quarry list which would be a sad loss , because they are a magical bird , that are plentiful in numbers. If anyone goes shooting and the shoot captain says “no woodcock “ , choose your moment and quietly ask him why ? and ask him on w
  8. I’ve been all over woodcock shooting . I’ve been with a well know producer of fox calling videos in Cornwall and locally. And this was the best days woodcock shooting I’ve had . The estate only does this day once a year and every year they shoot similar numbers. It’s low impact on the woodcock and I think it’s sustainable. I know that there are a lot of people not shooting them now but it’s a personal choice and I love woodcock shooting/ eating .
  9. Absolutely, I’ve been using mine for years. I’ve made some modifications over time . I’ve added a fifth leg (see picture) this helps reduce any forward or backward rocking , and makes these sticks incredibly stable . I’ve also added rubber grommets off electrical wall sockets to stop the sticks rattling when you carry them . Rubber bungees to connect them and allow them to open instantly to the right size for your rifle . I’ve also added a small webbing strap to stop them opening too wide . All for about £10 .
  10. Had a good day Woodcock shooting in Cheshire on 16th December. Six of us turned up for a days walked up shooting over spaniels and a pointer . Great dog work and plenty of woodcock. We ended the day on 35 woodcock and 15 pheasant. They taste great too .
  11. Simulated has a limited market. I go on one every year which a friend organises for charity. It’s £195 for the day and then you factor in 500 cartridges plus my donation to charity and it’s an expensive day . And I don’t know many people who go to more than one or two a year and to be honest I only go on it because I feel a bit pressured in to it . It’s always been a bit of an opportunity for guns to get together out of season . And for shoot owners to make a bit on the side before the birds go to wood . The shooting industry makes millions and is a big money spinner . I think we have a future
  12. There not for me or anything because I never miss , it’s just, I think I might know this bloke who needs some socks like that ...... where did you get them from ? So I can let him know !!!?
  13. Well said Stavross . I know game shooting and in particular large scale pheasant and partridge shooting is under the spotlight at the moment and the shooting industry is working hard to get its house in order .... it has to . But for me it’s the friendly little grassroots shoots that are where it is at . Modest bags and all the birds being taken home and enjoyed . Low impact on the environment and within the reach of anyone. I think while there are people like you and my friend Tim still running these shoots then the future looks bright . ?
  14. A friend of my wife had a brain tumour and they could only remove some of it because if they took it all out there was a risk of loss of speech and blindness as well as motor skills . They told her they would treat it with radiotherapy , but warned her it will come back . Every six months she goes for a check up and it’s like having the “sword of Damocles “ hanging over her head while she waits for the results of the tests . But that was 20 years ago and so far so good . With today’s medicine it’s not the death sentence it once was . I sincerely hope it all goes well for your friend, life can
  15. Harris take some beating for quality. Being a tight arse I saw one on eBay for about £15 when I got it I found that it didn’t tilt so it’s impossible to cant the rifle if you are not level , making it useless, I ended up getting another Harris . Lesson..... buy cheap , you buy twice .
  16. You’ve got one up on me Stavross. I’ve not seen a stoat in Ermin, maybe it doesn’t get cold enough down my neck of the woods . I’ve caught them in traps with bits of white on them but I’ve not seen them in a full winter white coat . Sounds like your season has been going well . I got an invite from a friend who runs a small shoot . It’s where I first picked up a shotgun and shot a pheasant 30 odd years ago . He used to run it with a pal who sadly died last year of the dreaded big C . It was the first year without Rob and he was remembered at the end of the day with a toast of port . His as
  17. I saw Billy Connely at Gloucester Leisure centre in the 80s and I laughed so much my ribs were hurting... a genius. And I will never forget seeing Jim Davidson at Gloucester, his opening line was , “anyone here from the Forest of Dean ?“ there was a small cheer from the foresters “ Christ , I thought you would all be at home f@cking your kids “. Maybe you need to know our local history to truly appreciate that , but us Gloucester boys loved it .???
  18. I always found Frankie Boyle’s audience put downs funny . Then for some reason he got all left wing and PC . Now I can’t stand the prick .
  19. Most of the keepers I know keep terriers and some have the odd Lurcher . Most of the good keepers who are a bit old school like me , spent their formative years rooting around a hedge bottom with a ferret or with a running dog or two. None of us went to college . Does that make us better keepers? I think it gives you field craft which can’t be taught in front of a blackboard. But it doesn’t matter if you can outwit the local one for the pot boy . Because he’s not your enemy, like has been posted before , disease is a major concern now as are gangs with catapults , but you would be a fool to ta
  20. No problem FD , I love a bit of ratting . The dogs stink like fermented chicken shit now though ? , got the Mrs off the settee for a while . Glad you enjoyed the fallow invite, you scratch my back and all that ?
  21. I haven’t been posting on here for a while but I had a look today and I feel that my input might be valid as I earn my living as a gamekeeper and have done for the last 15 years or so . There are some valid and interesting points of view in the previous posts . If you really want to get into keepering then go for it . Is there a future? Who knows. I agree that there there are aspects of the shooting industry that can be improved. But my experience is that the game that is shot on the estate I look after goes to the game dealer and in to the food chain . Poorly paid ? Not always. The keepers I
  22. Hi all , I’m looking to replace my peltor ear defenders, they have been very good but now only amplify out of one ear . I’ve noticed a couple of people with MSA sordin defenders. Has anyone got a pair and are they worth the extra ?
