They keep dumping them , we’ll keep shooting them ?

A keeper I know sent me this picture of a fox his new beat keeper shot on Monday. The leg looks too neat to have healed naturally. In fact I’ve shot foxes with legs missing before and the bone is visible (like a chicken ?) . He thinks it a fox that’s been released by some well meaning but misguided charity . What do you think ?

I had a text message from the chicken farm “chickens killed in run “ yesterday. I got over to the unit at about 7.30pm . I set myself up on a flatbed trailer by the hen house , near to the kill sight . I decided to try the icotec 350 with the pheasant distress call , but nothing showed up . The doors on the house shut at 9.0pm so I gave it till 9.30 pm and called it a night , frozen to the bone . I turned up again tonight and decided to walk around the unit spotting with the thermal. But didn’t see anything until the doors shut . I noticed a heat signature in the hedge on the f

Good for you . I’m sure that by the time October comes things will have sorted themselves out .

Can we still shoot ???

It’s all Chinese whispers at the moment. I’ll do some more digging today and see if I can find out anymore. -

I’ve been around shoots for years and shooting folk love a wind up . 100 birds will become 200 . I think the term “fake news” originated in shooting circles. Big shoot next to small shoot , sounds to me like a recipe for bad blood . -

I think the general rule is , pest control is fine . Recreational shooting isn’t. Best policy is to have your covering email from the FEO and an email from the landowner. It’s a judgement call really, I’ve been out a few times on a chicken farm because he’s losing birds to foxes . I think this guy was shooting deer. It’s probably not seen as being a good reason to be out . -

I don’t know how true this is but I’ve just heard through the grapevine that a guy out stalking on wheat fields near the Forest of Dean has been pulled and the police have had his rifles and shotguns off him . -
Full time keepering means I am out twice a day feeding, morning and afternoon. If you have wheat on the ground that is going wet you’ve fed too much and wasted the wheat . I keep my birds a bit “sharp” , so they know that the food is there when they come down from roost and then for the second feed before they go to roost . All shoots are different and what suits some won’t suit others , because of the amount of time and effort involved. I do have some hoppers and minolas about and it’s these that tend to get targeted by the deer .
-
I might try that , but I spin most of the time and the deer get on the feed rides

We used to only have fallow appear on the estate when they start putting pressure on them in the woodland and forestry next to us . But mountain bikers and public access has pushed them onto us permanently now . I keep knocking them over but they keep on breeding and showing up . The problem is that they push the roe out , and we have always had really good roe here for whatever reason they seem to produce good heads . I try to keep their numbers down as they eat a lot of pheasant food and damage cover crops .

I got fed up rolling cases around on a little mat . I found this stuff is good and time saving .

All the deer in my pics apart from the CWD are from the estate I keeper in Gloucestershire . Most of them were shot by clients I guided. The CWD was from an estate in Bedfordshire.

Good write up ? and a good little trick leaving and sneaking back . A mate of mine did that and caught his Mrs in bed with his best friend.

I wouldn’t worry too much about losing birds to the big shoot . They will more likely be worried about losing birds to you . But providing you put some down on your patch they can’t moan too much . Habitat is key . You need somewhere for them to roost , some cover for them to escape predators during the day , food and water . Like Balaur said start off with a small number first , and see how you get on . -
I never used to bother too much about photos, I was “live for today “ but looking back I wish I’d taken more . As you get older it’s nice to look back . It’s also a bit sad sometimes when I realise how many friends I’ve lost over the years , and quite a few well before their expiry date .

Here’s a picture I took of a shoot day I was invited on about 25 years ago . That’s my hat and old Baikal on the wall . It’s a shame but quite a few of those faces are no longer with us . The pigeons were shot when I was recovering from a back operation over peas . I had to drag the dead birds back to my truck on my hands and knees, I was in agony . I got home and laid them all out for a picture, with my Mrs moaning about the mess the feathers made . I sent this picture into The sporting gun magazine in the hope of winning a copy of “Red letter days” by Jim Albone , remember him anyone ?

Doesn’t surprise me . I’ve had the caller going with the wind in my face and had a fox stood right next to me . Another time I was behind a Cotswold stone wall with the caller next to me , the fox ran up the other side and jumped on top and was face to face with me in broad daylight, I don’t know who was more surprised ?
-
Not sure Ben , it came in like a steam train straight up to the call box . It must of thought “dinner” and then when it saw the plastic man made object thought WTF ! It then must of just been confused. I’ve never had a reaction as strong as that before, they are usually more cautious. I’ve had them running at full tilt across a field and then when they near the box they tend to slow up . I haven’t really watched what they would do when they got close to the box before because as soon as I can I shoot them .

Got a text from the chicken farmer yesterday “ fox in hen house field “ . I have shot 6 in the last week or so , where do they keep coming from ? I texted back “ be over later” . I knew from my previous visits that there were foxes working the bank behind the shed so I thought I’d have a go with the caller and cat food trick I did last time , but this time from my pile of blocks . I placed the caller out to the right of the power line pole in daylight and sat back and waited for darkness. On with the pheasant distress call . It wasn’t too long and Charlie showed up , I turned

Maybe I’ve planted a seed Stavross! I’ve seen your posts and you seem a good sort with a lot to offer a lost youngster. I won’t go into it too much , but even in the relatively short time I’ve been doing it , I feel I could write a book on it . Some of the kids have had such a troubled past that there is no helping them and it’s sad cos you know how their future will play out . But not all ! For a lot they just need a safe environment and someone they can trust . It could be you who makes a difference. Sod working for a boss who doesn’t appreciate you . Take a different path , and maybe Change
