  1. I don’t know how much you know about tractors, so if I’m teaching you to suck eggs , ignore me . My brother in law bought one and it didn’t really do what he wanted. He thought , I’ve only got a couple of small fields , I don’t need a big tractor , a small one will do . Thing is that little tractor is short on Horse power , also all the bits of machinery are going to be limited in what they can do . He kept it and runs a circular saw off the PTO which works well . But ended up with an old David Brown, which does everything he wants and was cheap and never goes wrong .
  2. Big , small , medium , who cares as long as you enjoy it and you are out . Good company, fresh air , and a bit of a craic . At the end of our shoot days one of the old boys always says “ well , that’s another day they can’t take off us “ , and I think he’s right.??
  3. Had our first day yesterday and it went really well . A little bit weird with the masks and social distancing thing going on , but the pheasant and partridge didn’t care , they had other things to worry about . The weather was kind with a good breeze and not too much sun to blind the guns ( great excuse for missing, remember that one ) but best of all not a drop of rain , I’d almost forgotten what it was like doing the drives without slipping around and getting wet . We did four drives and they all produced lots of birds . The third drive after break was the very good with 69 phe
  4. ? what we need is a great big melting pot , ? big enough to take the world and all it’s got ?................. I’ll get my coat ?
  5. A mate who keepers the nearest shoot to me noticed a real drop in the number of foxes he shot this spring . He wracked his head about it and put it down to COVID 19 . There is a lay-by near his shoot with public toilets and is sheltered from view from the road . During lockdown it was taped off . So the local doggers and homo’s had nowhere to go also the foxes weren’t being dumped . He can’t wait for things to get back to normal. ??
  6. Yes , it’s all sorted, got a copy for everyone, beaters, pickers up , game cart . I’m not having to do food this year , every cloud as they say . Caterers sorting all that . And the guns are going to the local pub , instead of the house . But apart from that it’s business as usual.
  7. I was shooting the Canada’s in moult one year and I had to take my hat off to one . It realised that we weren’t shooting the greylag , so it was hiding in amongst them with its head down , as they ran across the bank . They aren’t stupid ?? It reminded me of that Meme with the fox in amongst the hounds , “when you are in deep shit , just look straight ahead “.
  8. I can’t believe how quickly it’s come around, but it’s our first shoot on Saturday. Social distancing , and transport and food is going to be a bit different, but we will get there. I’m looking at the birds and they are well tailed up and they have lost their juvenile feathers on there heads . Got to get pegs put out soon . Already got the drives planned . Someone asked me if I was nervous ? I said “ask me in December “.
  9. Wilf , it’s not genetic engineering , they import a pit bull from Eastern Europe, it does the rounds , they sling it over greyhounds or any other bitch in season , they are not working dog Messiahs . Most of the pups will do the business to one level or another. The trick is to get a dog that can work with other dogs , most are a bloody liability the owners family, to other dogs and livestock . Why we actually need dogs like this is a good question, but hey , each of us to their own sport .
  10. I’d keep them away from shows for start off . Proper terrier men don’t need to show off . They keep to themselves, they don’t post shit on social media and get on with it by themselves in a low key way .
  11. There has always been that “thing” with the young dog lads . Parading dogs at shows with half a jaw . Putting dogs in situations where they wouldn’t put themselves. Who’s dogs the hardest. It’s nonsense. They are nonsense.
  12. My point is that running dogs on badgers is bad for dogs , and ultimately bad for the image of running dogs . But we don’t need to worry about it do we , because it’s banned anyway. I’m someone who has been involved with dogs a long time and I find it , if I’m honest , barbaric . I’ve got no problem killing thing’s. I do it daily. But I think I am humane . I use the right tools for the job . If you think it’s fine , crack on , you’ve got your moral compass, I’ve got mine . I apologise if I’ve come across as judgemental , I also realise that it might be a case of th
  13. Digging, done properly, can hold its head up , as a humane method of pest control . But when idiots get involved, it’s spoilt it for everyone.
  14. I agree with JDhunting about the upside down justice system that gives more punishment for this than peados or burglary. But there is an underlying sentiment on this thread that the only crime they committed was getting caught. I’ve been involved with terriers and running dogs my whole life , I was one of the first in my area to have bull crosses back in the mid 80s .So I know a bit about it . There is cruelty involved with running dogs and badgers. You can’t eat a badger and it’s a powerful animal that takes some killing . A pig is not going to outrun your dog s
  15. I don’t think it looks ugly , but then I love NV . You are right about the IR , the built in units never perform . Any of the calibre's mentioned will be fine with NV .
  16. I’ve been waiting for you to test one . Looking forward to seeing how you get on with it . The reviews seem good . And for the money if the footage I’ve seen is to be believed, I reckon they represent good value for money. Just looking at the pictures you’ve posted. , the scope looks like it’s quite far back on the rifle.
  17. I think I will stick to reading about it , it’s a lot safer. ? Check out “Death in the long grass “ by Peter Hathaway Capstick . I think you will like it . I couldn’t put it down .
  18. Maybe I’ve read too many books on hunting in Africa, and story’s about Man eating lions and Tigers. And tales of daring hunters and how they brought their nemesis to book . I think as a hunter it’s possibly the ultimate. It’s a calculated risk , nobody who goes into that situation believes they will die . You put yourself in a situation that is dangerous, but you believe that you have the knowledge and skill set to deal with it . If you don’t you will be found out . Unfortunately as a Brit , if I went to Africa to hunt leopard or lion , it would be with a PH . Who w
  19. I had this sent to me on WhatsApp a while back . Very strange behaviour. If there is one thing I would say is that foxes never cease to surprise me with their behaviour, or antics.
  20. Has anyone told him that there is a great big world beyond the land of the bogs and the little people.
  21. Got my Partridge yesterday, they are looking good . I will start releasing them in a day or so .
  22. Not sure about that , late September till early November as a rule of thumb .
  23. I was out topping up hoppers just now . Next to one of my covers was a couple with two dogs off the lead , having a picnic. On inspection of the small wood , which is normally full of pheasants, I noticed it was empty. ? My blood pressure was rising and I approached the couple and in as polite a manner as I could muster I informed them that they were a long way from the footpath, and it wasn’t a picnic area . They said ,” yeah , yeah , whatever, we will finish our food and then we will go “, I asked them to go now please , no response. Ok then I thought , see how you like this , I went around
