  1. I reckon I could get up there ......... getting down might be a fire brigade job ?
  2. It’s strange that this thread has appeared now , I recently got permission to shoot on a farm that once belonged to a family who’s son was a friend when I was a kid . At the back of the farm are two very old oak trees that I used to climb and play on 45 + years ago . As I walked around them I recognised the same branches that I grabbed hold of and the same way up to the top . Makes me feel really insignificant and how short our lives are . I know they aren’t the biggest or the oldest oaks out there but there is a strange sort of beauty to their twisted branches and swollen trunks .
  3. That’s the beauty of a remote caller you can set it up in a field and sit back out of sight with the wind in your favour. And you don’t get a sneak up .
  4. I wish I had a pound for every time a fox has done that to me . If I can I try and squeak out in a field and check 360 with the lamp or thermal . The best one was in daylight, I was calling a fox at dusk behind a stone wall and a fox appeared face to face with me , I don’t know who was more surprised ?. You will get a better chance when the wheat is off , the weather looks to be improving.Best of luck Si
  5. It’s starting to make sense now , about Christmas time last year the pot smoker smashed his car into a ditch and road sign by the turning into the village. He left the car and went to bed . His father got on the war path about the overhanging trees and the wet leaves on the road which were to blame for his sons car going in the ditch . Well it seems leaves could well be to blame , but not the ones his father was going on about . Can’t wait till the next parish council meeting.? I usually miss when I get confident, I’ve been on a good run just lately, and everything I’ve pointed
  6. I’ve got to say I find your advice about going around clay grounds, trying different guns a bit odd . Especially now with COVID. I don’t know what kind of clay shoots you and everybody you know who buys guns attends . For one , going up to a complete stranger and saying “ hey , can i have a go with your gun “ ? That doesn’t really happen , going around the clay grounds I go to , most guns are slipped until the owner takes the stand . Shooters tend to go around with a friend or group of friends and may not take kindly to having their round interrupted . Most of the time there i
  7. Good luck Si , let us know how you get on . ?
  8. At long last , they have cut the wheat . They aren’t hanging around this year , they’re bailing it , followed by the muck spreading and discing . I’ve been chomping at the bit to get out on these fields as they always produce foxes . It’s funny how foxes behave but t try hey always seem to appear or approach from the same places year on year . When you know a ground well it certainly gives you an advantage . I got on the first few fields at dusk and tucked myself away for a bit and thought I’d see if the fox that gave me the slip on the barley field would turn up , but nothing showe
  9. I was talking to the farmer who sprays our cover crops . He keeps a few hundred sheep . I asked him how his lambing had gone . He told me of the devastation he had suffered because of dogs off leads , miss carriages , twisted up births , because of pregnant ewes being chased . All to do with the increased footfall because of COVID 19 . Not to mention actual attacks on sheep . He was down 30% . That’s the difference between profit and loss . People don’t seem to realise that the countryside isn’t some park that is there for their enjoyment. It’s a place of work . I wonder how those
  10. Got a brand spanker Derv . Took about a week to get it to look like the old one .??
  11. Well I’ve been outsmarted by a townie!!! The shoot I keeper has it’s very own Fenton , if you are unfamiliar about who I am referring to , go on Youtube and watch a hapless dog owner trying to recall Fenton while it chases a heard of deer . The offending mutt i am referring to is walked almost daily off the lead through a part of the shoot . I have politely asked the owner to keep the dog on the lead but the woman is either deaf , stupid or an anti . I thought I’ve got ways of dealing with dogs like that . I shot a few rabbits and squirrels gutted them and left the guts and bodies al
  12. And this is also a point I made earlier, that unless you know how to shoot and I mean really feel comfortable shooting, so it’s effortless . Then really you don’t know what you are looking for in handling characteristics. It seems to me that Rabid wants to spoil himself and get a gun that makes a statement and one he can feel proud to own and will be the envy of fellow shooters. I feel he should get one that he really likes the look of , that fits him and then set about honing his shooting skill with that gun .
  13. They have just appointed a new head of the BBC , a new head of the civil service, who I think is a Dominic Cummings yes man . The swamp will be drained . ?
  14. It looks like the new head of the BBC is trying to drain the swamp , I hope it’s too little too late . There is talk that the BBC could be defunded or at least have non payment of the licence fee decriminalised as soon as November. I bet Maitliss , linaker , Nish Kumar and the rest of them are crying into their Soy lattes . I think / hope we are beginning a new age of “common sense “, and lunatic left wing ideals are silenced. I’ve watched a few interviews with the actor Lawrence Fox . The guy is a liberal thinking luvvie , but he said a couple of common sense things on question
  15. During the season I do a fair bit of loading on a couple of commercial shoots . ( not this season, social distancing) . And one of the first jobs I do on a day is check the guns . I check the cartridges are the same calibre as the gun , ( it can happen that they bring the wrong guns of cartridges) and then a quick once over . I can’t help but dry mount the guns and swing them around at imaginary high pheasants. I then think , I could shoot that , or you can chuck that in the skip . It literally takes me seconds to have an option whether or not I like it . All good guns should balance and swing
  16. I visited Bass pro / Outdoor world in Florida earlier in the year . I was like kid in a sweet shop . But while I bought clothing and other bits and pieces the one thing I didn’t rate was the boots . Compared to Meindl , lowa , scarpa , altberg . The quality wasn’t there . I didn’t see one pair of boots there that would last me a season . I’m not one for knocking American stuff , because I admire their hunting and shooting culture . But that is just my opinion.
  17. He is a retired Brummy jeweller . They are the best sticks I’ve seen . He did an otter which was awesome.
  18. I think I’ve been stood behind you at the deli counter in my local Tesco , rolling my eyes as you try every bit of cheddar before you decided that you would have to go away and think about it . ?
  19. Not sure , he tends to sell them on shoots . I used to go loading with him and he would have one of his sticks with him , the gun he would be loading for would comment on how nice a stick he had and he would say , “ I’ve got some in the back of my car if you are interested “ the teams of guns would clear him out .? His health has not been too good recently and he has had to give up the loading but thankfully not the stick making. He usually has a couple on the go but it’s not a commercial venture, just a hobby.
  20. Well done to you and your mate . Nice shooting at serious ranges . I thought you said there weren’t many foxes near you ? I know why ...... you’ve F@cking shot em all ???
  21. Nice when a cunning plan comes together. Worked a treat bumping the buck out of those trees . The knife Riohog made has done a few deer now and has held its edge . I knew when I saw some pictures of the knives he makes on here that I would like it . For what it’s worth anyone looking for a stalking knife that shows up in the grass , I can recommend the knives from Riohog . He never asked me to do a write up or gave me any special deal . He was just a sound bloke to deal with .
  22. I was expecting to see pictures of shot wildfowl, neatly lined up with satisfied shooters kneeling beside them . Then later on pictures of roasted duck with new potatoes and runner beans in the “ what’s cooking “ thread in the general section. What a disappointment.?
  23. A friend of mine makes these , bird and animal heads , plus horn and antler . PM me if interested.
