That was a great clip . I watched it to see if my I could see my grandad. He used to have a fish and chip van on the hop fields of Kent . Made a fortune he used to say . Similar thing when I was a lad was black currant picking. A few coaches used to come and pick Up the pickers from our village and take us to Newent ( Gloucestershire) . They used to go to the Ribena factory. You were paid by the weight of your bucket . The trick everyone did was to piss in your bucket just before weighing...... every little helps . Never did like ribena .?

You are right. I really should get some sort of big rifle drag bag . Or one of those big flight cases . I’ve got shotgun slips and rifle slips and even a plastic rifle case . But not found anything suitable for the digisight. . I’ve always thought it a bit of a grey area with regards to transporting guns . You can for example drive on a road between fields when out performing pest control with the gun in the vehicle out of a slip .

The Fallow here used to be just visitors, when they started culling them in the national trust woodlands behind us and the pressure was too much they came here around Christmas time . In the last 6 or 7 years they have become resident , so no real traditional rutting stands . This is the earliest I’ve seen Fallow rutting but this year has been strange. The roe were stop start , so my guess is it will be the same with the fallow. The weather has not been cold , it’s been very mild .

Hope you both have some success. Just an idea Stavross. Inviting someone for fallow can sometimes be a bit hit and miss . A little trick I’ve done in the past which works is to bait an area . I’ve used carrots, fodder beet / sugar beet , alternatively pony nuts . Works well especially with some molasses. I know it’s not really stalking for the purists but it will certainly help fill the chiller. And can save a disappointing long drive . Worth keeping as a backup if all else fails sort of thing. Good luck and looking forward to a scary picture of you with a fallow.?

Chilli burgers ? then ?

I am busy with my fallow culling at the moment. I don’t know about you FH but I keep culling until they start to stink and then leave it till just before Christmas . Then hopefully get a few bob for them then . At the moment the game dealer says he doesn’t want any deer but will take them and pay me £1 a kilo . I’d rather give them to friends.

Already seems to have started here. Heard the clatter of antlers yesterday evening, two good bucks going at it . Just the start I think . I’d get them shot sooner rather than later as there is too much of a testosterone “twang” to the meat if you shoot them in the rut proper .

I just put the rifles in the truck, with the butt in the footwell and the scope hanging with the barrel on the seat . I then cover it with a fleece ( so as not to alarm a nosey motorist) . I can put it in the truck and get it out of the truck without being seen by anyone.

I was out at last light yesterday and heard the unmistakable sound of antlers clashing . I watched these two bucks really having a go . It’s a bit early, but the rut is on its way.

I love a 22lr . I wouldn’t want to be without mine. A good choice of rifle and by the looks of it , fair weather will be gathering dust in the cabinet from now on , where it belongs.?

It’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea that’s for sure . But I think it’s one of the best films I’ve seen for a long time .

The devil all the time . New on Netflix, slow burner I think they call it , dark and sad . The wife didn’t like it I did . Worth a watch . Reminds me why I don’t like religion.

If I had to choose my favourite time of year I don’t think I could , all the seasons have their charm . But if I had to it would be a frosty winters morning . I think it takes me back to the excitement I felt when I was a kid , ferreting , seeing my breath , hearing the thumping underground and waiting for a bolt . Magical!!!

They look in superb condition (apart from the holes ) a good night. ?

Bit of a change in the temperature this morning, the birds were waiting for their grub in the dark ? . Driving back to the yard over the causeway was like being in a sauna, the mist/steam coming off the reservoirs was a reminder of how warm it’s been and how cold it got overnight. Autumn is on its way !!!

Phil , if you want to drive down the M5 to 11a I would be happy to let you have the tank . As an alternative, have a look at plaster mixing baths . I think they would suit your purpose. ?
