  1. http://www.silkenwindhound.com/question.html check out the questionnaire for prospective owners "do you want a show or pet dog?" no mention of "or worker"
  2. sorry, hadnt read krawndens post before i typed the above,it virtually says the same as mine
  3. They are certainly not bred to be mini Borzoi. They can and do work. http://www.silkenwindhound.com/history.html this is the woman who created the breed, she says on her website that they were bred to be mini borzois!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i'm not saying they dont work, the point is they have never been selectively bred for work! do you honestly think that anybody breeding these dogs, which go to pet homes for big money, has culled poor workers/ or refused to breed from one of their champion showdogs because it couldnt put in a proper shift? dream on.
  4. great news. how did he get them back?
  5. quick question, just for my personal interest. what are the prevailing colours of fallow in your area? the local forest carries about 800 fallow, and around % per cent are black. i was watching a herd of 90 odd the other day, and of them there was one menil, two white and 12 spotted (normal). interestingly, 5 or 6 of the blacks had a regular white tail marking, which i havent seen before, whereas the others were dark in that area
  6. there pretty little dogs if you like that sort of thing, but as the man said they are not working dogs, just a novelty breed, an attempt to breed mini borzois. i would steer clear.

  8. an old farmer friend of mine (dead now, god bless him) had some germans work on his farm during the war. one day when they were harvesting peas they came up and said in broken english "we want peace" to which the farmer replied "we all want peace, you b*****ds started it". the germans were most upset, protesting "no, no, we want peace to eat, we dont get any vegetables in the camp"
  9. fecking outrageous, why the hell are they here in the first place? we should leave the whole lot of em to just get on with it and kill as many of each other as they possibly can. political asylum my arse. male rape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! holy shit!!!!
  10. oh, and i wonder if the huskies eating snow is actually a cooling rather than hydrating strategy?
  11. heat adaptation - another interesting topic, and definitely dogs (and other animals) can be conditioned to have greater tolerance of overheating. i have an old book here with a section about training pit dogs, and one of the things the author suggests is to gradually, and in a controlled fashion, to reduce the amount of water the dog is given. his theory is that a dog which is trained in such a way will develop a greater effiiciency in internal water use, and therefore when it is woorking hard this gretaer eficiency will limit the effects of dehydration through panting. i think its probabl
  12. i hope that pup is getting regular trips to the bone man sandy, as well as plenty of time in the magbox.
  13. no, i think what the man meant is to put the dog back in the car BEFORE he shuts down, while he is still lively. worth a try. i wouldnt take him to his bad place for at least a couple of months, then take him on his own for just a little while.
  14. i watched the show, it was a bit shit to be honest, but then these type of shows are not aimed at us, they are exaggerated and made dramatic for the casual viewer who knows feck all about the subject. its always happened, some trainers "manage" dogs, horses, athletes whatever in order to make a few quid, some are genuine and do their best in every race. my dad knew some racehorse trainers years ago, and they would run horses with different weihts of shoe to influence their performance. used to say an ounce on the shoe is worth a pound on the saddle
  15. i like the way the article said the deer were killed by lurchers then bludgeoned to death (has anybody even used the word "bludgeoned" since about 1920?). smart lurchers if they are able to carry a weapon to kill deer with......... emotive clap trap yet again
  16. ignore the colour/religion thing for a minute, whoever thinks its OK to burn a young lads face, especially when that lad is doing charity work, whether they are black white yellow or fecking green they need a bloody good hiding. some horrible, horrible people in this world, i'm afraid
  17. he will end up maimed or dead, of that i have no doubt especially fecking about with them while they are feeding. even that young male lion was making faces at him while it was eating, wait until its adult...........
  18. Now I may not be scientifically correct but personally I have always referred to large ruminants of all species as "beasts" .........I thought that was a general term ?? yeah i get that, but would you say "just have a look at the black cow in the second shed" or would you say "just have a look at the black beast in the second shed". the fella i was talking about used the word beast at all times, he wouldnt even use cow/heifer/bull to distinguish them. even the calves were "beasts", and a calf certainly isnt a large ruminant! i reckon we can keep this thread going as long as the g
  19. Now I may not be scientifically correct but personally I have always referred to large ruminants of all species as "beasts" .........I thought that was a general term ?? Are not ruminants known as beasts of burden as in oxen that would be used to draw carts and ploughs? TC yeah maybe if you were living in 17th century olde englande. doubt anyone under the age of 40 would even know what an ox is anyway
  20. i have found over the years that letting a dog have a few mouthfuls of water every now and then is very helpful. as you chaps have said, too much can cause problems but as a ball park figure, half a pint for a slightly dehydrated dog is very rapidly absorbed out of the gut system and into the tissues, so five or ten minutes after a small drink like that the dog is ready to go again. i have never found that extra sugar or such has made any difference to a dogs performance, you touched on carb loading and i think that diet is key to this point, a dog getting a good balanced diet, with plenty of
  21. sounds like he has something stuck up his nose, maybe a grass seed or similar. the vet can normally get these out, might have to flush it through with saline or such. the other thing might be a small polyp, which again the vet could advise whther it needs removing
  22. as the man said, clean dry draught free, i dont really like shavings or such i like something the dog can burrow into if it wants to duvets from the charity shop are great, just throw them away when they get too filthy. i have one of those tube heaters, but as my dogs are in a brick built converted garage, i only put it on if its close to freezing, or if they are wet. if you have a proper kennel, i think size is important. the smaller it is, the warmer it will keep but it should be just big enough for the dog to lay flat on its side if it wants to.
  23. Cattle are called beasts everywhere around the world, only not where you residence, so who's making the exception ? Just the two cents of another "furriner " Cheers, "mummy, where do we get milk from?" "beasts, darling"
