  1. half cross is best i think if you select the right ones. The more bull the cleverer the dog. day or night at any task except hare coursing. I used to keep 3/4 types but too much grey means too many injuries.
  2. Or you can just use surgical spirit which is mostly what that stuff will be I think, but you need to wait until the rawness has healed. Surgical spirit will toughen up the pads. To help the healing you do well to spray on some epsom salts twice a day for a week.
  3. If its long in the back it needs to be flexible because it has more body to move. A shorter backed dog can turn a ninety degree angle in a pipe quicker and easier than a long back. A shorter back can manouvre quicker and easier in a tight space ie oven, because its feet are in contact with the ground more often. Its the diffrence between a mini and a coach.. Big lorries need to be articulated to manovre round a tight corner but a short vehicle does not, thats why I say if a dog has a long back it needs to be flexible where a shorter backed one doesnt.. I dont think extremes of either are good
  4. Its needs to be flexible if its got a long back.
  5. Its the body between shoulders and hips. Dont gallop as good but better in a tight space than a dog with a long back. A short coupled dog should be quicker to manouvre.
  6. No business of the vets, he sounds a bit of a twat..some of them get a lot of work from rspca ..change to a more farming type and horse or Greyhound vet mate.. I wouldnt go back there..good luck
  7. I found a dead rabbit the other. No one else got permission. There wasnt a mark on it. I know it doesnt always show a wound if its shot with a hollow point but this rabbit still had rigamortice and had not long died. It was full grown but young and otherwise healthy..I thought VHD left blood in the ear..Am i wrong about that, is there other symptoms?
  8. Will the countryside alliance still represent Scotland.. Will hunting and shooting survive there with the Reds in charge?
  9. Its the language people use that changes attitudes, and the language we are hearing now on this thread and in magazines and books is that dogs that were created to go to ground that will not go to ground can still be seen has working dogs. It doesnt matter if you enjoy bushing or ratting. You will find out at some point that the dog you have will or will not go to ground and stay. If it does not then it can and should be known as a failed terrier ,and if its kept alive it should be seen to by the vet so its blood isnt spread..Anne Roslin Williams had it right I think in her Border terrier book
  10. Borders for sale in cuntymans weakly this week. I wonder if they digging stuff?
  11. you cant get out of your box on it.
  12. could it of been a trapped nerve? They sometimes treat that with valium to relax things in humans. Where do you get it, i need some badly...I is well up tight
  13. Most dogs will kill rats I think, but the point is that the majority of Border terriers in this country and probably the world do not like the dark and the things that lurk there. If then we are going to call bushing/ratting dogs working terriers then the situation can only get worse for Borders and the rest. I think thats why people who have good little strains of proper working terriers are a bit protective of them and where they go to live. In the past I have enquired after lots of Border litters only to find after questioning about the parents that they were considered workers because they

    Horse Meat

I tried to buy horse meat from a market in southern france, but i was always too late and it had sold out. It looked like venison from where i saw it,lovely deep colour and no visible fat. Only trouble is i dont really like venison. I would still love to try some though..

    Teckels

They usually have long leads on those tracking dogs. I think they all go deaf on you aswell off lead.
  17. Got this knife today mate. Lovely knife, superb quality and finish, with a nice balance to it..The sheath is also good quality and holds the knife firmly in place.
  18. Thanks for the Knife riohog,it arrived today. That is a quality knife mate. Ive paid lots more for less in the past. Superb workmanship and lovely balance. The sheath is also much better quality than looks on the picture and holds the knife nice and firm. If I see Bear down the feathers tonight Im gonna recommend one of these to him. atb J..
  19. Always cut sticks in late autumn winter when all the sap has dropped down. Ash is good i think and looks nice with bark on..You should leave it to season for a year at least. Ive only made a couple of small whips with a Beagle type thong, but i usually cut a few sticks every year and use them the following year for walking sticks. Look up Peter Loxley Smith on youtube hand making hunting crops and whips etc.. atb J.
  20. hows it bred? just curious. Dont mean to waste your time.
  21. Good warning that Collieman..Its not worth the risk if thats what it can do. Dogs dont need or desire light in there quarters. Its us who need the lights.
  22. Lazerlite lamps come with a red filter with a hole in the centre..British made..
  23. Instead of going out in digging mode, just go for walks, but put a collar on the dog when you do. Let him find things out for himself. If you go out with others be careful where you put him. You could easily ruin him at this young age..If you get a chance it would be useful to let him see another dog enter a hole, and then to hear it baying at quarry below ground. Do not let him off the tether but allow him to pull as far as the mouth of the hole..The smells and sounds will be enough to tell him all he needs to know, and that things are below ground that are good fun. Make sure the dog to ground i
