Thats how i was taught by my taid (grandad) to make purse nets nearly 50 yrs ago, with a single wooden slider one end (looks like yours snapped in the middle) and just a knot the other end. Reason he gave for no rings was that rings cost money! No idea why triple stranded though.... I bolted plenty of rabbits into purse nets like that and never felt they were worse than a net with rings.
  3. Depends where you go and how u go about it foxdropper, each state has different regulations. I know lots of hunters from up here head down to Montana and go unguided for fairly reasonable costs for elk, antelope, turkey etc. Lots of tags available over the counter rather than on a draw or lottery. If u want to hire a guide or outfitter then it obviously costs a lot more, and animals like griz or some off the sheep species will cost u an arm and a leg.... a recent big horn tag here was sold for more than $300,000 USD. Alberta extends big game trophy hunting from three mon
  4. Where we hunt we often hear them howling, and when it's calm / still the howls travel a right distance. We have shot a couple but it is pure chance seeing them. When you drop one the pack will scatter, then quite often start howling to call for the dead one.
  5. Best thing I did was come to Canada 11years ago, and similar to Tilly we have things here I could never have dreamed of having back in the uk. Anyone with a decent trade and half an ounce of work ethic can do very well over here, and although Trudeau is trying his best to f.uck it up for everyone, the freedoms and lifestyle compared to the uk is a no brainer for me. It can be tough the first couple of years but whatsapp/ facetime etc really helps. I have had a couple of friends who came over, and for whatever reasons went back to the uk, both now say they really regret going back. If you get t
  6. Think you mean cougar / mountain lion pal, thats not a puma
  7. Photo is legit mate, there is quite a few reports on it, and considering that guy is supposed to be 6'5" it's a very big cat ?
  8. LOL Tell me about it, I spent a good week fleshing, degreasing and home tanning this wolf my son shot, only for the lab to chew the nose / face...
  9. 18 inches of ice, minus 18 and nothing but a few tiny perch and a solitary small walleye.... Heading home now to get ready for the celebrations, all the best to everyone for 2023!
  10. Good result Bell, our bird hunting is finished now till the spring snow goose season opens, the local lakes have around 14" of ice and 6" of snow on top of them, and I haven't seen a duck or goose in probably 6 weeks....
  11. Looks good Wolfie, but think you should angle the main pole a bit when setting, or once sprung you might find the rat climbing the pole.
  12. Yes mate, and my son has a bull moose tag, shot a spiker wt last night. First cold spell we have had, crazy weather this year for sure.
  13. Got permission on a field that was absolutely loaded with snow, speckelbelly and Canada's, as well as ducks, (speaking with the farmer he reckoned somewhere around 2500 geese). It was misty/ foggy at first light but between me and my son ended with 4 snows, 14 specks, 2 Canada's and 10 ducks in 2.5hrs shooting, dog did great as well on only his second goose hunt.
  14. I still laugh out loud every time I think about my mate picking one up when we cornered it on the school field, and that's more than 30 years ago.... your right, them feckers can bite ??
  15. The dog retreived his first (and 2 and 3rd) geese today, he made a meal of the 1st and dragged it most of the way back, but by the 3rd he had it (mostly lol) figured out.
  16. You are probably right there is more chance of a black bear attacking you than a griz, i cant be arsed looking up the numbers but there is probably 300 or more blacks for every griz in most areas where the populations co exist, and not a lot of areas where griz are common... I can tell you most people out here who are around lots of bears see blacks as a pest / nuisance, and griz as unpredictable and a real danger. Obviously with wild animals making generalizations is not that wise but most black bear are fairly timid and scared of people, griz just don't give a feck about humans full stop. A
  17. There are plenty of wolves here where we hunt, as well as black and grizzly bear, and cougar. I would certainly agree with what u say on them been a clever, top level predator, but if I had to bet I would say the farmer would be scared of them from a damage ($) perspective, rather than personal injury. Bears, moose, cougar and even coyote are a far bigger risk than wolves. The wolves (with the exception of the habituated / fed ones in the parks) seem to have an inbred fear of humans and if u are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one they are gone as soon as they spot or wind you. Where I am
