As much as i prefer a Collie bred lurcher,if you ever get the opportunity to witness a proper cousing dog in the field, you may reflect on your last statement. im not saying that he is the best coursing dog going just saying that lamping a dog and coursing them can be right for some dogs and i have seen some proper coursing dogs working in the field and i have owned some very good coursing dogs but coursing is not my main game lamping is and as i said a lot of dogs used mainly for coursing are not great on a rabbit but a dog used for mainly lamping well make a better allrounder Lets not

, i think lambs can test some dogs, if they aint seen many before,As they move+look differnt to sheep. I dont think you can trust any dog 100%, you always got to keep aeye on them.!! Many years ago i ran a Greyhound bitch, totally stockbroken, early march one year coursed an hare along the side of a wood, came back with a lamb in its mouth, when i stockbreak a pup now i am never completely happy until they are used to lambs and running sheep.

As soon as people start to keep a working animal as a pet, somebody will see an opportunity to exploit the situation, fools and money comes to mind.

It takes very little time and training to stock break the vast majority of dogs, whatever their breeding, its all part of responsible ownership and working a dog in the field. Why then do some, not see it as part and parcel of owning a working dog?.

I would,nt own a lurcher unless it carried Deerhound blood,3/4 Grey/Deerhound i found to be the better option. For the allround working aspect i prefer the addition of a proper Collie/Grey.Bigger type lurchers take longer to develop and mature, this is where in the wrong hands the breed falls short, properly raised and entered, run on the right land,at the right quarry, these lurcher types excel and more than hold their own against other type lurchers.

Dogs far to young as you seem to know, accidents happen.Let the pup enjoy the summer, build up its fitness and strength as it grows and matures, come the end of September start some close slips, depending on how the dog performs slip accordingly.

A warm comfortable puppy eats better, sleeps better and thrives better, when the weather improves enough so that the pup can sleep outside without heat, from late May,then put it outside.Id stagger the process initially putting it out during the day, from early May,and taking it in at night. After a few weeks leave it out.

What sort of challage will it be Brother, just wondering how the challange came about and is it Sonny your running against Jude? Mr.Glover will want to have his cronies tagging along, make sure the dog he brings with him recognises his voice.
-
If you cannot give it an heat source outside then i would keep it indoors for a couple of months,at such a young age the pup needs to be warm and comfortable.

Craves recognition, knows all Beddy breeding but offers nothing towards the breed, legend in his own mind.

Smithfield lurcher, the Holy Grail of the lurcher world.

I remember reading an article about Scottish Deerhounds, remember the original breed is far removed from what is available now, they were bred to guard the house and occupants, track and hold wounded deer and hunt in pairs to chase catch and hold deer.Dogs that could chase and catch stags single handed were highly prized and clan disputes were known to have been settled with the gift of such a dog. These dogs would have been selectively bred to master their quarry and would have honed their technique in the field.

Patterdale Terrier - help needed
morton replied to darkangelwitch's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Adapt the dogs working lifestyle to a form of hunting that will best suit you, make yourself aware of possible pitfalls and conflicts of interest.I hope you receive the right help and encouragement with your dog,be mindful that you may have to prove your credentials to receive the assistance you ask for,all the best. -
I do like the Collie cross, their attributes and prowess in the field is legendary, they need to be challenged and worked hard to get the optimum out of them,i found that adding Deerhound/grey to the mix makes a more useful allrounder.

I do a lot of trapping for permission,on decent game holding ground, you do have to set tight rules or the arrangements can become problematic.I will be trapping this weekend for a 12 month old Lakey bitch,id like to be paid for every job but there can be more fruitful rewards.

Getting my first ferret,30 bob,it was a fortune then.Trial and error learning how to hunt with it,making nets from onion bags and finally catching a rabbit, then running home with rabbit scratching and kicking under my jumper,so my dad could kill it.Then having to run back for my ferret.I was about 7 years old but i can remember it so clearly,my first rabbit.
