  1. When you say you want to know how to enter your dog,i presume you mean hunting. If that is the case then i would get to know terrier lads in your locality and see if you can tag along. If you mean something else then pm rexdigger.
  2. So says the biggest boomerang going.
  3. Got yourself a new tyke L.Its got some catching up to do with that mucky mutt.
  4. Over the years every size, shape and breeding did the job at the sharp end, some better than others, the biggest drawback these types have now is they maybe don,t look the part when held on a lead, which to some,is a more important factor in their choice of dog.
  5. You are going about it in the right way, forgot to say ignore all the numpty,s,they will have little of use to be able to show you, learn first dog second the type of quarry, terrain and lifestyle will probably play a big part in the type of lurcher that will be best suited, there,s plenty of genuine people in your location i don,t think it will take you long to hook up.
  6. Youve made the right start with such a sensible post, state the area you live in and i am sure someone off this site will let you tag along and pick up a few guidelines, good luck.
  7. That Beddy,s doing well,fair play,keep it going.
  8. That mucky russel gets about, well done L.
  9. You cannot possibly have the best,i know that for a fact because mine is the best in the country, well its definately the best in England,if not in England its certainly the very best in Yorkshire well West Yorkshire, more than positive the best in keighley,im convinced its the best on our street,no maybe not ive a pup out of it thats definately the best in the country and that i am certain of.
  10. Take the dog out with somebody else, see how it reacts to them,if it interacts with them and is more responsive to there commands then stand next to them and praise it as nescessary,if the trust slowly starts to build,it will take awhile, then persevere. If the dog reacts to them only then i would look for a suitable rehoming,do explain the reason though.Learn from your mistakes,we,ve all made them.
  11. its easier to attract a woman with a mucky Beddy than a mucky russel, trust me on this you need all the help available.
  12. you want to get rid of that mucky russel and get a Bedlington
  13. I think you may have been in Leeds city centre as i saw you in KFC
  14. If it intrigues you that much find somebody local to you that will show you,you will obviously have to show your own credentials first and find somebody that can vouch for you,if your still intrigued then good luck.Try the Working Bedlington Forum.
  15. If you know the breeding and capabilities of both parents then lurcher to lurcher every time, when there are hidden elements in the breeding that you no nothing about, thats when problems can occur i.e. unacceptable size variation, lack of character, unbiddable, poor scenting ability.Stick to line bred dogs and usually the percentages will fall in your favour.
  16. I worked a 1st cross about 28 years ago,came out of Otley,called sinbad.Suited to terrier work,not enough pace for anything else.
  17. Some dogs are naturally soft mouthed, some are,nt.Young dogs learning their trade are usually over keen and will mouth prey more, once they become accustomed to regular catching they settle down and relax. If they are hunted on bigger prey, especially if it bites back, then it should,nt be a problem anyway.
  18. I have an acquaintance who will set off for a days mooching with a lurcher, terrier and ferret. The terrain consists of fields, woods moorland and riversides. He never knows what will be pushed up but expects the lurcher to deal with each and every occurence, the bag can vary enormously on each occasion. This to me is what is expected of an allrounder.I don,t count longnetting as a requisit of a lurchers work, the old time longnetters i knew wanted a dog that drew no attention, the dogs they used where basically medium sized street mongrels, all they had to do was work the land pushing towards the net,
  19. Are you waiting for summer ferreting because its to cold for you or the dog now,or os it because baby rabbits are easier for the dog to catch?.
  20. Just because its an hunting type dog does,nt mean its from an hunting home, plenty are kept as pets only, but at least you are making the effort to find them a home=fair play.
  21. Road work conditions the dog,a steady walking pace over a number of miles,it toughens tendons in the feet and legs and tones muscle,it gets the dogs fit enough to withstand the rigours of the field.Running them behind a vehicle, although an easy option, can do more harm than good, over exerting the same tendons and muscles.
  22. Most coursing folk have a deep respect for the hare as a quarry species, the ultimate test of speed strength and endurance of both hunted and pursuer, these people find it difficult to understand the mindset of people who show little or no respect to the hare. The vast majority of none Saluki bred dogs cannot compete on the same level as match dogs, therfore lurcher owners try and tip the balance in their favour by fair means or foul, this is where the disagreements start. You can stand on one or the other side of the fence,or sit on it-but beware of splinters.
  23. There is a world of difference between taking a pup along to exercise its mind, investigating all thats new, growing in confidence with each new experience and learning to interact with its peers, than taking it out hunting before it is physically and mentally capable.IMO an owner that would do this is probably trying to make up for something lacking in their own physique or personality.
  24. Take control, put it in its place, firm but fair.
  25. Don,t get to struck with certain bloodlines,a lot of these lines are bandied around with little substance to them, its usually a selling ploy.Go for a pup thats bred out of workers of the right type, insist on seeing at least the dam at work, the sire if possible. You won,t be dissapointed with the right pup they make excellent bushing companions. Most of the decent working Beddys now have a percentage of Lakey or fell in their breeding,if you are offered one that as none id walk away.
