  1. Some people need to take off them rose tinted spectacles,if anybody is naive enough to censor poaching threads on an HUNTING forum then it really is a sad state of affairs. We may sometimes have to agree to disagree with each others opinions, thats life, but the idea of pandering to whomever gets upset at the idea of poaching, with or without dogs, very sad indeed.
  2. There,s a few lads about now breeding Beddy,s back to working type, don,t get confused with K.C. stuff, would you class a K.C. Lakeland as a working type?.The gene pool is not as widespread as it is for Lakeys, russels and fells, but it is slowly increasing. There is an awful lot of people about with alleged workers,of all breeds and types.
  3. There are a lot more genuine working Borders about, using one of these genuine dogs in a lurchers breeding produces a dog with a better than average probability of making the grade. If any Collie is to be used go for a worker,at the last Working collie auction,Skipton cattle market,a Border from a working background made £3,500+.Most of the dogs that day fetched over£1500.It isnt difficult to procure a line, farmers like pound notes, even when a lurcher,s involved.
  4. Id do it in stages, house during the day, kennel at night. If it goes allright after a week id make the switch permanent.Cold nights are setting in so make sure they are all sleeping inside the kennel. They may become vocal till they settle into a new routine.
  5. Liked the post, keep it going like that,2-3 runs and stop, the dog will get fitter and stronger, will learn a bit more with each session and will soon be catching well, all the best.
  6. Depends on the owner,a good owner will bring the best out of most pups.
  7. Early ,s Deerhound/Grey.-Collie/Grey.Belonged to a lad i hunted with, the stuff that dog could do,a true allrounder.I missed a pup out of it,regret that mistake to this day.
  8. Working type Bedlington, good nose, quick, don,t look for trouble and vocal.

    I'm BACK!

Ive only been on the forum a short while and look forward to your posts, they are usually well reasoned.Donate a fiver and keep them happy.I do agree with you though.
  10. I only breed a litter to replace ageing stock,i think £150 is a reasonable price for a pup.The biggest problem i have recently encountered is finding suitable owners.
  11. Id go for the Greyhound option, they should be ideal for your purpose.Good luck
  12. The snow last winter decimated the rabbits in most areas round the Dales,in wooded areas they seemed to have fared better and have recovered to pre-winter numbers. You can see where the bark as been stripped from trees 6ft up,as the snow got deeper the rabbits stripped the bark higher and higher.A farmer called me out after the snow had finished,to get rid of rabbits that had moved to low ground and where chewing through is grass bales, the damage was unbelievable,it was shameful to have to kill the rabbits they where skin and bones.
  13. Look for one of the racing Greyhound owners, walking their dogs.{there,s plenty there].They will point you in the right direction.
  14. To much stuff gets away from a poor jumping lurcher where i hunt.I start them off on low obstacles and go higher as their confidence grows.
  15. I work a Collie/grey-Deerhound /grey, with the terriers.I prefer a larger type lurcher because you never know what will be flushed. Its not all about what you catch, the hunt can be more rewarding.
  16. salukis are in our dogs i do agree but our dogs what i have today and my mates are bred from best to best of coursing dogs so much line bred that i think they area strain in there own right and are far superior to salukis Watch out you are going to have a load of Arabs knocking on your door with bags of loot.
  17. You can only go so far with line breeding until you have to use an outcross,id only use a tested cross though.
  18. You know what happens when you plant an acorn, steady away and the best of luck.
  19. The only dog ive seen blown and lived spent 2 days on a drip,it was rested and run again carefully but never reached its potential again. It was retired as a pet.I dont know if it was a physical or mental problem with the dog.
  20. Ive seen a few dogs blown, when they run and come back staggering like they are drunk, get them rapped up and warm, carry them back to the motor and dont run them hard for at least 2 weeks.Ive been out with lads that have let them recover and thought the dogs have a couple of runs left in them, its hard to bury a good dog just because the owner wouldnt listen.
  21. Ive mooched about for hours sometimes and caught sod all, with scenery like that, the kill sometimes is irrelevant, good hunting.
  22. Then you need to take over, learn the dog that ferrets are a no go area,if you can,t then don,t take them out together.Sometimes you have to step up your training methods.
  23. 1st get the dog used to the ferrets,2nd get the dog used to the ferrets,3rd when the dog is used to the ferrets take them out together.
  24. Grassington a few years back used to be like Blackpool illuminations at night, there were more lamps up there than in Woolworths.
