  1. Because of the hunting ban you will have limitations on what you use the dog on,as part of your work you will have to stay strictly within the law. Many pest controllers use dogs to assist them,id go for a smaller type whippet cross.Out of work hours you may wish to broaden your hunting as you will not face the same restrictions.
  2. thats why i went for different stuff away from around here as they are all releated but a fare few do work them. I was given a Lakey dog bred from that area, carrying Gary's breeding, was used as a show dog for 5 years until i got it,it worked well for me over 2 seasons, could'nt fault its work,a good dog to dig to,unfortunately picked on the lurcher and came second,id happily have another from that breeding, but won't pay the price they are going for now.
  3. That looks like a dropper,a pet one!.
  4. I had good results with rabbit heads,in cage traps.
  5. Ive never smoked, but at that price for a bit of rope and wood, ill buy some cigs.
  6. Thats what my mother said and all you have to do is look at the results.Get some education.
  7. If it was an accidental mating!then why not a trip to vets for a jab?.£££££s.
  8. Don't panic, you are overfeeding, its better to overfeed than underfeed a pregnant bitch.Feed her twice a day, morning and night, slightly more than her normal feed, when she's pupped id still feed a little more twice a day, depending on her condition, more if she's losing weight, less if she.s getting fat.
  9. You seem to have given the ferret every chance, give it to someone to work who will overlook its indiscretions, otherwise cull.
  10. Chicken mince on its own is a poor diet.
  11. The only places i know you can only use albino ferrets,so sorry.
  12. There are still some genuine lurcher owners about,i hope you get to meet a few throughout your career,in all honesty the majority you meet you will not want on any land you are employed on,some of them will also be keepers, but thats another story.
  13. The ground i hunt,a dog as to jump as second nature,at speed, otherwise it will quickly lag behind in the chase. It does'nt matter the size of the dog,if it cannot cover obstacles it's strike rate will fall. When dogs start to look for shortcuts and gaps, because they lack confidence in jumping, thats when it's likely to pick up more injuries.
  14. I used to have 7 lurchers and worked them all,i used them all for specific purposes, lamping, ferreting, coursing, terrier work and general mooching about, they were all bred to suit different hunting options, saluki types for coursing,beddy/whippets for ferreting etc.Now i just keep 2 and a few terriers, the lurchers have to have the ability to adapt to all my needs, its not the amount of dogs in the kennel thats important, its ensuring they get the work to justify their keep.
  15. A KC judge should never be allowed to enter the same ring as a working terrier, mind you the way the terriers, that are winning working shows, are progressing a KC judge will have more in common with them.
  16. My bitch was 6 years old and carrying an injury that virtually curtailed her hunting days,i put a litter through her with the idea to use her to bring the pups on when the time arrived, she became a real bully with the pups and their progress was being hampered, she would never have made a suitable pet,the last walk a dog takes can be the hardest one you may have to take but a responsible owner as to make that decision.Id retire a dog to a suitable pet home if possible,if not then a sad,sad walk with fond memories of days in the field.I personally would'nt keep a retired animal, they take up kenn
  17. Hancock and daughter make a living selling Collie type lurchers, not everybody is fortunate enough to be able to source their pup from a genuine working background. At the end of the day if your happy with what yuove got and it serves a purpose then fair play.If it does'nt make the grade follow hancock and bang a litter out of it.
  18. If they inherit a % of all the component parts you are in with a chance,if they throw to any of the other parts then their versatility will be restricted and the litter will throw all size's and shapes.
  19. Ive tried most types over the years, but the most success ive had as been with the Collie/Grey-Deerhound/Grey.Suits a wide range of terrain and hunting.
  20. If i wanted a truly versatile lurcher then im afraid i would'nt consider either cross.
  21. The vast majority of keepers work long arduous hours, few days off,pay not brilliant, the majority of times they meet lurchers is when they are chasing poachers about, ruining there hard work. Its not the dogs they have a problem with its the owners. If you want to get on the keepers side then prove yourself first. If you come across one of the miserable tw*ts,that no matter how hard you try, won't give you the time of day, then fall back on plan A.
  22. Gently massage the joints and toes,if the pup shows little discomfort then light exercise until the symptons pass,if on the other hand the dog shows an acute discomfort to your actions a trip to the vet would be the safest option. If you run to the vet every time your dog takes a knock in the field its going to become an expensive hobby.
  23. If a yorkshire lad puts that amount of outlay out,he won't rest easy until he's clawed it back.
  24. KC bred Beddys have no place alongside their working equivalent,if the owners of these so called working parents cannot prove their terriers credentials in the field then walk quickly away, there are more decent Beddy's about now,as with other type terriers there's a lot of peddlars and chancer's about.
