  1. what col says is very good advice get out and try it first before you contemplate getting some stinkers ferret are pretty easy comeby these days they need looking after all year round and feeding people often dont realise that a ferret can live for 10 plus years and if you dont put the effort in in the start a ferret that bites for 10 odd years isnt much fun to own
  2. just taken in a small snady hob been out for a while by the look of him covered in ticks and has had a bit of a rough time by the looks of it. got the ticks that i can see removed with the old otom remover and have given him the frontline treatment (spray as required) but hes got quite a few scabby wounds on him couple of sore toes aswell. after a good feed of fresh rabbit and a good drink hes fiighting fit and tame as you like. hes got very matted hair in places and as i said a few scrapes and scratches. so whats the best course of action for cleaning him up gona leave it overnight to
  3. few things worth trying before anything else. 1 loosen all fixing screws holdng the action to the stock. then retighten to the correct torque with a good torque meter. 2 set the scope to the middle range and forget until later. 3 get 20 rounds all from the same box of ammo 4 fire 1 shot and wait 5 before fireing the next alow the barrel to cool fire all 20 like this after each shot stand up then take position again before each shot. 5 do not adjust the stock or remove anything from the stock take a £10 note and run it between the barrel and the stock it should go all the way to the action
  4. 223 is a cracking round for the foxes for as far as most people can honestly shoot them a 223 with a 1 in 9 twist barrel will shoot the majority of the 223 bullets mine loves the 55 grains i have the remy 700 pss its very very accurate and will bug hole 5 shots at 100 yards every time its also a good calibre in the borders on the roe but as its a heavy old gun it stay at home for these trips most the time its not much use on the sika i would say them things take some hitting i tend to use the 270 on them for the extra insurance.
  5. as a FAc holder for 20 odd years i have seen a load of these questions get raised and they tend to rear there ugly heads every now and again. in the good old days the copper coming to inspect your cabinet and guns had some gumtion about him and they new a bit about firearms and guns in general and where able to ask the relevant questions as to weather you where a suitable candidate for holding an FAC. the guy that i first met was ex army he new a ggod deal about firearms and being in the forces myself he knew of the knowledge that i had due to previous training. the problem we seem to have
  6. mk3 for me all the time these days once you have the knack of it they are better mk 1 is still a very good bit of kit though and i wouldnt turn a cheap one down
  7. callum Try to find a small 3-5 holer warren if you can lay your nets over then walk away to find another warren and net that up. then go back to the first one and quietly enter the stinkers out them both in at the start. while they are down back off abit from the ground and stay clear of site from the holes. when you get a rabbit get it out the net and put it down for the ferrets to have a sniff off to start with. when you get home let them have it in their hutch to eat once they have the taste of rabbit they seem to improve massively. but as stated its getting a bit late for working them
  8. ive both normal working ferrets and a half eu hob here and in all honesty the half eu is no match to the ferrets for normal everyday working. he took a lot longer to come to terms with handling he can sulk like fu*k when he wants and hes a lot lot bigger than the rest of the gang. when it comes to work hes a very determined animal and due to his size doesnt take a lot of greif when in the ground. i have him for a set reason and that is to dig to when the jills are layed up if they do hes my "liner" for want of a ferreting term. he will move on the others when required hes housed seperate to
  9. just read this and totall agree ideation. loads of their arguments are flawed article about cross breeding dogs a few months ago was a disgrace. havent bought it since due to this.

  14. depends on the weather and the size of the bag for me if im moving on to another spot or something then ill gut them then if im on the same spot usually at the end or if its warm ill get a few then gut them and carry on like that.
  15. mate of mine had 2 brothers together from kits and one killed the other during their first HEAT/Season so keep entire hobs seperated from january through september now eventually they will start scrapping and you may end up with an injured stinker or worse.
  16. cheers for the advice guys when i say just started training her she was doing the basic stuff in the garden and on the lead while out she will sit and stay and up till this weekend would come when called so i thought that i would have her out a bit with a bit of free running space got a large field opposite me thats ideal just letting her have her run about seemes the extra freedom has bollxed up all the previous work. will try the long lead method and see what happens. shes laid across me knee as i type this when im in the gaff shes like me shadow. cheers muddy
  17. just starting to train my first beddy whippet i itend to use her for ferreting and running rabbits. shes six months old at present and when out and about has no itention of coming back to me. been using a few treats in me pocket to try and get her back but not happening at the minute. when she does return she will run circles around me then belt off in what ever way she fancies. been out tonight and she ran off luckily she ran straight home from the field but it is across a main road so bitconcerned really any advice please. when shes in the house or the garden shes usually under me fe
  18. if you dont intend ever breeding them get them spayed is best option not bringing them out of season can lead to complications that are best avoided
  19. cracking looking animals there mate
  20. have had ticks on me when ive been out on the hills after dear in the long grass but never had one attach luckily on some of my ground they are rife so i allways have a good check afterwards touch wood none have been attached yet thankfully.
  21. first of all i would suggest the use of a good marking dog then you will have a better idea if they are all inhabited. your gonna need a few ferrets to get the rabbits moving in a big warren like this there are a few ways to work it and thats to either start at one end and move along the bank to the other hopefully pushng most of the rabbits to one end or with a team of you start in 2 gangs either end and work to the middle. be a big job on your own. i would try and net as much as possible and long net a bit off the bank of the railway. in days gone by people use to use rags soaked in creatsot
