  1. Was talking to a warden of the wildlife trust yesterday and he said they even had to warn people about not tripping over mole hills, branches etc: they have to cover themselves in case they get sued! Bloody ridiculous world we live in
  2. Also supposed to help arthritic conditions by reducing the levels of acidity in the body: been used by humans for years for this. I just keep forgetting: getting old is a bugger when you can't remember what you're taking stuff for
  3. Brilliant: thanks so much for putting that link up.
  4. Such prejudice usually starts when someone sees one or two badly trained or below par examples of a breed or type. They then base their opinion on that and look no further: hardly an broadly informed base on which to build their prejudice. However, there's no smoke without fire, and I think that certain types of dog attract people for the wrong reasons. Education is everything, in both humans and dogs.
  5. Mackerel is a great food: quality protein, fat (as in fish oils) loads of vits and minerals; go for it.
  6. This could be a scene from Lord of the Rings: complete with flying Nazguls! Awesome photo I reckon. Image number 7 is the one I'm referring to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-23273069
  7. I can't understand this thing about people separating jills from their kits. Kits, like puppies, wean themselves automatically once they have teeth and are old enough to eat meat. I have never, in over 30 years of keeping ferrets, separated jills from their kits. Make sure there is enough food down at all times: a bit of dry in a bowl all the time, and meat every evening once the weather has cooled down a bit. Big bowl of water to encourage kits to drink. Another advantage of leaving the kits with their mother is that they learn from her to trust the hand, come to call, and not be scared
  8. Wouldn't it be better to list them separately?
  9. Tinned dog food is at least % water: waste of money and not good enough for pups. Plus full of flavourings, artificial colours etc. Much better to feed fresh meat as part of a balanced diet; there are loads of raw dog food suppliers these day: just Google raw dog food suppliers, or use a good quality complete food where meat is the first ingredient listed on the bag: that is important, as the cheap complete foods contain more wheat than meat, plus use things like soya, beet pulp etc to add to the bulk and weight without contributing much to the overall nutrient value. I've sent you a pm.
  10. Nice clutch there> lovely photos She looks very protective.
  11. ... and the way in which dogs are a wee bit different to both birds and bees!
  12. I haven't really got a colour preference: had dogs of all the colours possible in canines, though I do like merles: interesting to look at and perfect camouflage. Having said all that, I seem to have a batch of mainly orangey, fawny, reddish, or pale browny sort of things at the moment: makes for a more homogeneous look when mooching around: from a distance people can't tell how many there are Aside from the black/brindle and the black and tan of course
  13. It's the lack of fat as well as certain vitamins in rabbit that causes rabbit starvation: if people who got rabbit starvation had eaten the whole rabbit, guts, brains (brains are quite fatty) and all, there wouldn't have been a problem. OK, rabbits are less fatty at certain times of the year, but ferrets evolved to eat whole rabbits. Ours seldom get anything else and they live to a ripe old age in general ... even on frozen rabbit.
  14. I agree that people who don't know what's what in the lurcher world can be had over like that, but if everyone did their homework properly, only bought a pup on recommendation from serious working dog folk, AND if breeders were totally honest about their dogs: then it wouldn't matter. I'm sure that there is a wider and wider gap happening between proper working lurchers and those which are pet/racing/showing dogs. But does it really matter if someone new to the game gets a dog that won't be up to much in the field as long as they are happy with it? There are far more 'hobby' hunters than t
  15. I guess it's all a bit gay for many working dog men Pedigree dogs seem to attract more than their fair share of gay blokes, but lurchers and terriers remain the bastion for red blooded proper men: I think! Probably why they're not into showing off their dogs: doesn't do their field cred any good. I did show my dogs a bit many years ago, but got bored witless waiting for one person's opinion of my dogs ... for that is all it is, one person's opinion. For most people it can either be a social day out, or a frenzied bid to have the 'prettiest' dog on the day. Lurcher and terrier shows have
  16. Can I use your words in my training book? Seriously, that is so well explained
  17. Buck is heavy, that's for sure, but my OH has a Picardy lurcher that isn't very different to Buck in size, bone etc. He looked like a giant Labrador pup when he was young, and he's still a heavy lump now, but you should see him hoover up rabbits on the lamp. Makes it look easy. Only thing he doesn't run so well on is wet, deep plough as he sinks too far in. Heavy and big doesn't always equal slow and clumsy.
  18. Damn, I didn't know Reddawn had left: another good one to go Those pups should be as tough as hell: can't imagine them failing as bushing or beating dogs.
  19. Is it conn your on about If so i seen a vid or two of his teckel, seems to be a good un That's the one! Shame he got rid of it: I enjoyed his vids.
  20. I voted for longstanding members and those with more than 100 posts, but on reflection, voting like that would be hypocritical on my part as I've bought two very nice lurchers on here, one from someone who hasn't posted much at all: keeps himself to himself. He was actually looking to place pups further afield as had no luck finding GOOD homes in his area. So it isn't just peddlers who use the for sale section more than the others.
  21. In a nutshell: how to build a bionic lurcher! When the time comes for those pups to run on the flat, they'll think they have wings!
  22. I was trying to buy some carpet on Ebay, but instead of £40 as a BIN price, when I clicked on the colour I wanted it showed £4000! WTF! I phoned the seller and they explained that when a colour had run out, the price automatically showed as 4 grand to put people off That way no one would try and buy the item: obviously an easier way of doing things than withdrawing the item: very weird.
