Further Update On New Lurcher Association
skycat replied to Dewclaw69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Pointing no fingers, casting no blame, but wouldn't it be good if we could say to ourselves, "how can I help the type of dog that means so much to me?" Rather than asking 'What's in it for me?", couldn't we ask ourselves what WE can do to help save the lurcher as we know it. As a working dog, as part of a way of life that is now under threat. I understand that modern society is all too often about egotistical viewpoints and selfish standpoints, but there are people out there in the world who have worked tirelessly for a cause, with no thought of gain for themselves. What about all the people -
we found this with the bull greyhound first cross. One litter to a good game bull produced a storming litter. Very steady temperaments , laid back but very good at their job. The same dog to a different greyhound bitch a few years later produced a litter of sheep killers with not one sensible dog amongst them. two litters from the same matings can be very different. I bred two litters from the same dog and bitch. Bitch was 1/4 Beardie, 3/4 Grey. Dog was lurcher to lurcher for generations. The first litter came out lovely and typey, all very similar to one another. The second litter thr

Oh yes! Clever pup indeed. Reminds me of Sparrow, my little merle lurcher when she was a pup: could get out of anywhere.

Help You Guys? My Eyes Are Bleeding.

The two people I know who have made their own horseradish sauce always grate it outside on a breezy day: to carry the lethal stink away as quickly as possible. -
Further Update On New Lurcher Association

This might sound completely off topic, but yesterday evening I saw Malala Yousafzai on TV, and she was saying that she had been able to forgive the man who had shot and nearly killed her, because she wanted to show people that nothing is achieved by revenge and bitterness. Now, if a girl who was nearly killed can do this, why the hell can't we lurcher people learn to forgive the past errors made by all of us. Life shouldn't be about being scared to make mistakes; it should be about learning from past mistakes, admitting them and moving forward. If we simply carry on going round and round -
That is a lovely looking animal.

Is Bruce a straight first cross Beddy/Greyhound? Or generation bred Beddy to Grey?

Horrible thing to happen, but better for the dog to go outright like that than you having to carry him home alive and in pain and then have to make the decision to PTS. I share your pain because I have lost several dogs over the years to accidents, but unlike yours, none of mine killed themselves outright.

Further Update On New Lurcher Association
skycat replied to Dewclaw69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If we truly want to see the lurcher continue to exist and work in this country, where it evolved in the first place, we owe it to ourselves, future generations and the dogs themselves to do everything we can to make sure that everyone: the public, the media, the government: see lurchers as intrinsic to our nation and our culture and our people. At the very least, we must show them that our dogs are trainable, safe with livestock and other domestic animals, and of course safe with people. This is why we need all the lurcher owners on board, every last one of them (except those who are tota -
That is a stunning well made animal.

I've just realised what p*sses me off the most about people shooting large trophy animals: it is the fact that they need to throw huge sums of money into killing the biggest and best of a species. WTF????????????? Where the hell did this type of human being end up in such a f*cked up state of mind? It's like, the bigger and more impressive the animal is, the more they want to take it down, snuff it out, and say, hey look at me, I did this. These trophy hunters are the saddest, smallest fools on earth.

Scary isn't it. I saw a 3 year old scrolling through stuff on a IPad looking for the film she had been watching. They just learn it the same way as they learn to speak; to them it is probably even easier.

Interesting to note that China has recently agreed to ban the trade in ivory http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/sep/26/china-and-us-agree-on-ivory-ban-in-bid-to-end-illegal-trade-globally Somehow I don't think that this will end the problem at all. I reckon there will always be a demand for such things, whether legitimately obtained or poached.

So where do you or we get the truth from then? How do we know which opposing viewpoints are true?
-
How can an animal be classed as vermin when there are less than an estimated half a million left in the wild on this planet? I guess that the only thing which concerns those who make money from ivory and canned hunting etc are how much 'elephant products' will increase in value once their source has been eliminated forever.

A lot of fleas are now very resistant to Frontline. Advocate or Advantage are the best products now. Or use Diamotaceous Earth. It won't stop the fleas from breeding but it will kill them quickly once they are on the dog: slather the dog in the powder making sure to get it right to the skin. It kills by damaging the hard shell of fleas and other insects so they dehydrate and die. You also need to treat your kennels, house and anywhere the dog goes. We had a bad problem with fleas this year and used a two pronged attack on them, three actually. Had a pestie friend come in and spray the house, u

Had it happen twice to me, both times when the same lurcher was lamping. The first time I sent her out to a rabbit unaware that a fox had also targeted the rabbit. As the lurcher went in, so did the fox, then realised what was happening and fled towards me, sidestepping my feet at the last moment just as the lurcher picked the rabbit up. The second time she went out after a rabbit and a fox that had been stalking the same rabbit jumped up and tried to flee. First time she'd seen a fox, and when she came back to me she was carrying it carefully by the scruff just as she would have done a rabbit

One of my lurchers out of the Airedale to a coursing dog: mainly Saluki Grey. Not the very fastest I've had, but plenty fast enough for mooching about, lamping etc and tough as old boots with tons of drive, a nose as good as her dam and a lot faster than I would have thought possible for a first cross Airedale, but I do think the fact that there is Saluki in there has contributed to the lightness of build, not forgetting that although my Airedale was built like a tank, her own mother was quite lightly built and very leggy. First photo she was 5 months old, second photo 9 months. Not had a work

Exceptional Whippet you have there, but how much is down to you? Allowing her the freedom and time to learn her trade quietly and patiently.

Stay well away from anything with white gills, white or off white cap and slender stems. Could well be https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destroying_angel Even one in a basket of edible field mushrooms can contaminate the whole lot, and kill you. Important to see how different they look when young and haven't yet grown a stem. I wouldn't even touch an unknown specimen of fungi in case it was one of those that can contaminate all it touches. Turn it over with your foot or a stick if you are unsure. With the boletus family, or any mushroom for that matter, their colours can be very different

A Short Film Of The Other Night By Rew
skycat replied to nottzhunter08's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Some nice angles and good clear footage there. But squeaky noisy rabbits! I kind of cringe when they make such a racket Must be all those years I spent trying to be super quiet because our rabbits leg it as soon as any noise is made. -
Put them in adjoining cages with just mesh between them. That way they can get to know each other slowly without damaging each other. They should be OK once they have grown used to each other. Very occasionally you get some ferrets that won't accept new ones, but once the kit has grown up a bit and the jill no longer feels it needs protecting things should settle down. At the moment the jill sees the hob as an intruder into her space.

Not Long Got Back From A Good Night

Good to see some serious work has gone into getting those dogs ready for the season: they look fit and well -
Malt: there's a brilliant book called Feel the Fear .. And Do It Anyway. I can honestly say that this book helped me turn my life around, along with some very good friends who kept on believing in me. The book isn't just about what we fear, but helps people to see that they can be in control of their own lives despite a lot of crap.

Deep respect to you both for maybe taking what is always a difficult decision. Far too many couples stay together because fear of the unknown future keeps them in a familiar safe rut. Having the courage, and the awareness, to go your separate ways in peace is a huge thing to do, and having known life lived in fear of the future I know just how freeing it is to make a positive step in the right direction. We can only live life to the fullest if we banish our fears and become aware of our potential to live how we are meant to live. Different for everyone, and only we can decide what is right for
