  1. I think it's a very good round,I have used them since mid 80's but find the 6.5x 55 suits my needs, and a much more pleasant caliber, it really is down to personal preference, 270 is a very good caliber but the swede delivers virtually the same, and more down range, and doesn't have the recoil,
  2. I went from .243 to the 6.5x55 in my opinion the best move I've made for a long while in shooting. Really? I cant imagine why, the .243 is faster, flatter shooting, and in my opinion a better one shot killer than the Swede will ever be, yes you can shoot heavier bullets in the Swede, but and it is a big but, at the expense of point and shoot capability, true at a hundred yards or so it matters not, but start pushing 250-300 yards and the Swede is like a .22 air rifle compared to a .177, fine if you know your holdover points, but for me the .243 wins hands down everytime.how many deer do you s
  3. I went from .243 to the 6.5x55 in my opinion the best move I've made for a long while in shooting.thats what I did but also tried the 270, i have fired other calibers, but the 6.5 x 55 does the job, each to his own,
  4. I know someone who bought a 6.5x55 on the advice of an "expert", he is now sick as a chip and looking to go back to 25/06. Hardly surprising is it i have had a few calibers and liked them all, however two calibers are mentioned in this post, 22 hornet and 6.5x55, these are the two calibers I love, and use most of the time, if you are ever taking a novice out, or you have a flincher at point of fire, the 6.5x55 is superb, it drops red roe or fallow as good as any caliber, and you always see the bullet strike,
  5. Love the 6.5x55 well worth a try, great caliber
  6. My 527 loves the 35 or 40 grn vmax either one, both devastating rounds, I did try some 40 grn hollow points they were good as well, H110 powder,
  7. The hardest thing to do is get the dog to sit quiet, any whine however small is bad, steady is everything, you have to raise them as quiet as you can, nothing worse than seeing the other half having a conversation with your pup, nothing causes whinging more than that, and being too excited, it's caused a few fall outs in my house, in the past.
  8. just better to get used to the trigger in my opinion, I don't notice it now,
  9. first year he was Heavy mouthed, he has got better each yr last year he was very good, as he has matured he's steadied down a lot,
  10. my cattle dog x would definitely blood scent , I have tinkered with it with him,now he has matured he would sit quiet with you waiting for deer, but as a young dog his prey drive was too strong, and he was very stubborn, I am not saying they are all like that but mine was, he is a different dog now,
  11. My dog is a cattle dog x and I love it, great little dog, intelligent hard working animal I would have another, not sure of the percentage blood wise, but was led to believe 50% cattle dog 50% racing whippet,
  12. If you ask a direct question normally some one will answer it, as regards hard working and charging people, the skills learned in the country side are skills, and if they make there living using them skills, then that's there business, because they didn't got to college and learn them, or get accreditation from some self professed professional, doesn't take away the hours of dedication in the field in all weathers, every body wants to be experts, but nobody wants the journey it takes to get there, why shouldn't people prize there particular skill sets, Sorry edited while I had chance just
  13. Brilliant, as I said worth the journey
  14. Low mill ranges in Cumbria have dealt in them for years and they seem popular there, search there website it might be of use,
  15. Can you image carting a few of them across the field, it's really good to see these old traps very interesting, and shows the skill of the local blacksmith's of the day,
  16. The b*****ds, good luck mate hope you get them back,
  17. My last lot had soft trigger plates, but as above catching ok,
  18. It's good when you get the hard ones, it's good to come across them now and again to keep you on your toes,
  19. Good to see, someone getting stuck into them,I thought we had a lot, I was wrong,
  20. Deker,is right most rimfires will out live there owners, rimfire 22 rifles are bomb proof, as regards centre fire, be careful make sure they haven't been shot out, a stalking rifle second hand isn't bad, so long as it's not too old, target rifles are a different matter some of them see thousands of rounds through them, and the throats are shot out,if you don't know it's history buy new, would be my advice.
  21. One of my ferrets is partial to the odd mole, the other is starting like them too but I don't give them mole very often,
