  1. Not happenenned yet bob. Suppose theres always a first time. Now them roots are a right pain. Time i invested in a prunning saw i reckon
  2. Net every hole you can. Its inevitable that you will miss a hole here and there. The dog will have its chance soon enough. Personally i dont like loosing rabbits.
  3. The litter i bred this year are very highly spirited. When they are not sleeping or eating they are play fighting. They wake us in the night with there antics- they get very vocal when it starts getting rough. Never had ferrets so full off it.
  4. What a cracking bit of permission. Thanks for sharing
  5. The two hobs i bred this year are bolting rabbits now. Sometimes you get a ferret thats very excitble. Get somebody to hold the ferret then you have both hands free to put the collar on. Sometimes i buckle the collar up first then slide it over the ferrets head
  6. Good biit of kit . Saves you digging to deep if your off dig a bit. Also comes in for beating cover back, and as already said for making pilot holes for net and longnet pegs when the ground is hard. Mine is an old manhole lifting key. An old poker could soon be modified if you know anyone whos handy with a welder. Need to paint mine with some bright paint as they are an easy thing to loose.
  7. Leave the job till late say feb or early march. The cover will be at its lowest then I ferret them same day
  8. Its great when they fire on all four straight away
  9. Spend some quiet time with him on your own. Maybe a bit of ferreting/ mooching Dont curse him. Might take time to build trust . Long term youwant the dog to believe in your leadership. Sounds very nervous and sensative Stick to it and good luck
  10. give him loads of work.somewhere you can get plenty of runs. Mine pulls to start with - he steadys off after the initial keeness wears off a bit. The more often he works the steadier he becomes.
  11. I work a saluki whippet greyhound / collie greyhound/ bull greyhound. Really pleased with this type for alround rabbit work He is 24 tts.
  12. Try the next field , rougher the weather the better and go later. They got to get there grub somwhere
  13. Never a dull moment with a mad for it dog. Well said tommy .They dont piss about when theres rabbit scent about.
  14. Been out this morning with a young un entered hob and gill. Looks like the gill is going to need a few outings. The hob entered and all hell broke loose. He bolted four. Very pleased with the result considering they are this years kits Do hobs enter quicker than jills. They do if this morning is anyting to go by
  15. End of season lamp shy rabbits are no pushover even for a quick dog
  16. If they are big but shallow you can make progress. If they are deep it can be slow and painful . Never count the holes but have run out of nets on one or two ocassions. Never seen 500 hole bury If i did think i would change method of capture
  17. A good mooch around is good for the soul Hunting makes me happy, pure and simple. Modern day living is far to unatural because it is getting faster and more stressful
  18. I would take them while they were there. A lot will lie out in cover if they move out. Bird in the hand and all that Usually not to bad once you make a start. Good luck
  19. Usually chop back and ferret them straight away A few bolt odd one or two are dug Most of the ones i done in brambles dont burrow to deep. Sometimes they move out overnight if there habitat is seriously disturbed
  20. Somthing that can light you a fag up or pass you a net when you are struggling
  21. rabbits love the security a ditch supplies They are out of the way below the level of eye sight. They sometimes have a better chance of escape when bolted as they sneak out using the bottom of the ditch as cover
  22. I like a dog that gives everything even if it misses a few as long as he gives a good keen performance. A good nose can fill agame tbag without a lot of physical effort . very important trait in a dog that does the day shift
  23. its nice to watch dogs working togther .
  24. Now and again a lurcher pops up and its sole purpose through character is to please its master by carrying out is bidding. I know of one unfortunatley i dont own it. Working with the net in walled or meshed medium sized fields ibelieve would be a plesure once the penny drops. Not as deadly as the other methods though no doubt very satisfying
