Keeping dogs and spayed bitches together
wuyang replied to wuyang's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
What is your bitches weight like????Got my bitch done last year and have had problems with her weight Her weight is not too much of a problem, put it abit on now she's older (9), but dont think spaying any of my dogs has affected their weight a great deal. -
Keeping dogs and spayed bitches together
wuyang replied to wuyang's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Whippet i had in the past would mount anything and my mothers is the same, it follows my bitches all over when out just trying to get his leg over. My full border collie and lurcher never bothered with the the old spayed collie bitch. Maybe its a whippet thing. -
I currently own 3 spayed bitches. I am going to get another lurcher pup and i usually buy bitches, but i was wondering how a dog would get on with them and visa versa. I Know if i kept my mums whippet up here it would bug the hell out them trying to mount them all the time. I have however kept 3 dogs and one spayed bitch together no problems in the past. Any comments would be appreciated.

Favourite rabbiting dog / one for the pot dogs

I have only ever run 50/50 collie greyhounds, but i would def go down the 3/4 route. I know sizes vary, but what size do you reckon a bitch 3/4 grey 1/4 collie would be..... about 23 - 25ish? cheers -

if its just rabbits,,,daytime walk up or ferrets,,,,a nice 19inch to 21inch dog will do,,,,weather it lurcher /sighthound or long dog,,,,,,daytime,,,needs a slight more turn off speed,,,than lamped rabbit,,,,whippet type are good choices as most will work with you , than aganist u,,,,on a whole,,,,,my mate works a whippet/grey/ collie,,,i have to say its good,,,,beddy /whip greys,,,seem the tool when it comes to a good nose,,,its hit or miss with a longdog or sighthound i.e whippet or greyhound,,,they rely on there sight more which aint a bad thing, rather than missing what running about &a -

if you are wanting a pup for next yr mate im putting my beddie/whip/collie/whip/grey over a 3/4 whippet-1/4 beardie if its any good for you. I could well be interested, although i can't commit just yet, have you any pics of either dogs, and rough idea of when the litter would be due? -
Good to hear tod is on the mend. I used to work a lot of gorse years ago, but i try to avoid it now due to two of my dogs getting eye injuries from it, one luckily cleared just with some cream, but the other need an opp to remove the thorn. I think some collies love to bush, my long gone full border collie bitch was the best bushing dog i have owned. How do you find tod at using his nose?

Thank you to all that have took the time to reply. Im really excited about getting a new dog and its always interesting to see other peoples views and preferences when it comes lurcher types. I think once Christmas has passed i will keep my eyes opened and see whats about, although i have just seen a litter of 3/4 whippet greyhound,1/4 Collie Kelpie on epupz that tickle my fancy, but i think i going to hold back until the new year......although im dying to phone them up. -

i am not keen beddy lurchers, as ive said on (your 1st lurcher) post, you right with border colliexs they are to robtic in they ways, it pisses me of, would not have dog with to much collie in again, 1/4 is plenty. you ever though of a gsd xgrey, would be just as clever but ( not so manic) in there temp. just a thought, its a x i would really think about for the future Bird, i remember you saying before that you had a beddie lurcher, but couldn't get along with it, what put you off it? I am still tempted with lurcher to lurcher with a dash of collie in it. I am a bugger for a good rec -

Thanks all, ive always fancied a beddie lurcher, and the bed/whippet/grey does tempt me. My current lurcher can really turn it on when she's in the mood, but thats just the problem....if theres not much happening she just goes and finds a stick to play with. I am used to collie lurchers, but my previous one had some beardie in him and he was a much better hunter than the one i have at the moment, he would happily work further away from me, where as my current border collie/grey wont hunt very far away from me, constantly going only 20 yards away and then coming back to me to send her away agai -
Finally the wife has given in to me, it took some some time, but now i have the go ahead to add another dog to the team. I mainly hunt rabbits in the day time, bushing with the two terriers to the lurcher. My lurcher (collie/greyhound) is now nine. I'm going to get a another one some time in 2012. Most of my catches are in small fields so the dog needs to be quick with good strike for the rabbits and capable of an occasional longer course. It is also very important that it works hard to find its quarry (as there not much about) with good nose. Im open to all lurchers, but ideally belo

Talking of dog colour and other traits assosiated with it, i remember years ago a breeder of american cocker spaniels (the fella came reserve best at crufts the year a whippet won it for the first time) was telling me that if you ever buy a cocker, avoid the golden ones as in general they tend to be much more aggresive than the other coloured ones. So it does make you wonder if you can associate colour with other traits.

Im considering straw, but didn't somebody mention cardboard chippings were very good, Its Just knowing where to get it from, whereas straw you can get everywhere. Is there any particular type of straw which is best?

There was a vast difference in the hunting instinct with regards to working rabbits between both my border collies (both were from good working stock). Both would hunt, but one was a natural grafter. To me it would have to be off a good steady working collie with a good temperament. But i do think within a litter there can be quite a bit of variation in there natural hunting instinct.

Nice to see something thats not all legs.
